Our exchange student from Sweden, Gunilla Thorsson, finds the city of Rock Island awesome. A time to be bom, and a time to die; A time to plant, and a time to pluck up what is planted; A time to kill, and a time to heal; A time to break down, and a time to build up; A time to weep, and a time to laugh; A time to mourn, and a time to dance; A time to cast away stones, and a time to gather stones together; A time to embrace, and a time to refrain from embracing; A time to seek, and a time to lose; A time to keep, and a time to cast away; A time to rend, and a time to sew; A time to keep silence, and a time to speak; A time to love, and a time to hate; A time for war, and a time for peace. Ecclesiastes 3:2-8 4 Beginnings I Love A Parade The 1976 Homecoming Parade began at 2:15 in downtown Rock Island. This year ' s parade was the biggest and most colorful Rocky has ever seen, with a large number of float entries. For the first year the freshmen were represent¬ ed in the parade, with one float from each East and West Campus. Spirit and unity ran high as the par¬ ade threaded its way through the downtown dis¬ trict. The parade was at¬ tended by a huge crowd of spectators. Rocky East Campus took second place in the float contest. This float was built at the Robert Dan¬ ielson residence. Crimson Tide members boosted the spirits of those who attended the parade. Proud Seniors rode with their first place float. Lisa Kettman was the home sight for Moon ’Em. mm 6 Homecoming Blast ’Em was the theme of the junior float that tied for third, which was built at Lisa Sohl ' s home. Once again Rock Island High School Marching Band paraded through the downtown streets. Seniors capture first place in the activities sponsored by Senate. Billy Walker was the first lunch winner in the marshmallow stuff¬ ing contest, but second lunch winner, Bev Collier went on to take first place. Homecoming 7 A well constructed float turned into triumph for the sophomores. It was put together at Pete Lardner ' s. Homecoming Queen and King for 1976 were Beth Wright and Tony Scott. Beth was a member of Crimson Tide, the volley ball team and Campus Life. Tony was a football captain for three years, attended Boy ' s State and won Sec¬ tional in wrestling. 1 The 1976 candidates for King and I Queen were (FROM LEFT TO I RIGHT), Marc Beal, Kirt Platt, I Scott Allen, Tom Steele, Tony I Scott. Beth Wright, Beth Heming, 1 Beverly Collier, Ann Stradley, I and Cheryl Mohr. 8 Homecoming Beth Tony, Martians And Fun What are these things? Could they be martians? Of course , states Beth Heming, Kathi Rudd, Lisa Kenney, Jim Sacco, Belinda Law- horn, and Kim Hoover. Julie Goodwin looks back on a brilliant Homecoming. Homecoming Day, October 8 started with the Homecoming Assembly at 10:00. A special product¬ ion of The Great American Then was presented by Pepsi and KSTT. The Homecoming Roy¬ alty was presented, with Queen Beth Wright and King Tony Scott presiding over the concert by the Navy Country Band and the presentation of the prizes for the various contests. A Pep Assembly closed the school day at 12:30. Homecoming 9 Rock It Power In ' 76 Homecoming week pro¬ gressed with the Moon Landing Pyramid Contest during the noon hour on Tuesday, October 5. Each team consisted of fifteen members who tried to build a human pyramid within three minutes. After school, the Venus Tug-o-War took place over a mudhole in the Rocky practice field. A mixed team of jun¬ iors and seniors were de¬ clared the winners. Wednesday, October 8 brought the Mars Stuffing Contest during the noon hour. The objective of this contest was to see who could stuff the most marshmellows into their mouths, without chewing, in thirty seconds. Tim Carr wonders if the refresh¬ ments are as tasty as cafeteria food. The stadium wall provides a good place to sort out thoughts for Rocky students. 10 Homecoming Roast the Falcons was the theme of another junior float. Homecoming 11 Of The Rock Beginnings 13 Solitaire — Together; Makings Together each of us works to shape our high school. Separately we are free to lead our lives with individual interests, hopes and plans. Together we face the crisis of budget cuts and desegregation. We are strong. We are the shining future of our community. We are the Rocks. Mark Spitz (Marc Beal), makes a startling appearance during a pep assembly tik Future plans are being discussed by two Rocky Co-eds. Part of life is sliding down a hill for D. D. Benson, Jill Mossage and Meg Collins. 14 Beginnings In Search Of A New Horizon Reflections of a year packed with memories and new experiences, both dis¬ heartening and fulfilling. A year of togetherness symbolized by tears, smiles and voiced hopes for the future. A world of opening doors, new changes and a chance for individual enrichment. Our chances, our lives and our futures all begin in this building-our school. Rock Island High School. What awaits for us tomorrow is un¬ defined, as Bruce Reisman dwells on the future and reflects on the past. ’ Beginnings 15 16 ATHLETICS Rock Island High School pro¬ vides many opportunities for the students and community to obser¬ ve and participate in, such as many varied athletic events. Each year, hundreds of students, both male and female, devote endless time and energy to sports for individual achievement and the enjoyment of the fans. They maintain average and above GPA ' s and often hold jobs. These athletes are self-disiplined and well trained. They are the str¬ ength which binds the entire com - munity together with the student body of Rocky. 17 VARSITY GRIDDERS HAVE UP- AND-DOWN YEAR Big Don Greenwood churns out yardage against East Moline. 18 Varsity Football New Varsity Head Coach Hugh Johnson. The 1976 Rocks finished with a disappointing 4-5 record after getting off to a great start with a well- played 19-8 victory over LaSalle- Peru, and the 20-0 shutout of Alleman. The Alleman game returned the city championship to Rocky. An estimated 10,000 fans crowded into Rocky stadium, the largest crowd of the season. The Rock ' s first away game was a 33-16 loss to Assumption, a second half Rock Island rally was not enough to overcome a big Assumption lead. Game four saw the Rocks break it open in the second half as Tony Scott scored four touchdowns to lead Rock Island to a 32-14 victory over Moline. The Rocks then lost a dis¬ appointing 36-0 Homecoming game to Davenport West, a 17-14 double-overtime thriller to UTHS, and an 18- 12 decision to Galesburg that ended the Rock ' s playoff hopes. A victorious 16-8 visit to Quincy snapped a three-game losing streak, it was highlighted by Tony Scott ' s 95 yard kickoff return for a touchdown. In the final game, the Rocks held their own through the first half but fell hard in the second, as Davenport Central, the eventual Iowa State champs, dealt the Rocks a 58-6 defeat. There were many bright spots, however, as the Rocks placed Tony Scott, Kirt Platt, Carl Hill, Mark Abolt, Mike Cohen, Mike Johnson, and Kevin Platt on various Big Six and Metro Conference All-Star Teams. Kirt Platt also made the Chicago Daily News All-State first team, and Tony Scott made second team. At the Fall Sports Banquet the following players received awards: Kirt Platt, best defensive player and best blocker; Mike Cohen, best team man; Mike Johnson and Randy Peterson, most improved; Bob Bower, bandit; and Tony Scott, most valuable player. Winning the Big Six Con¬ ference and finishing sec¬ ond in the tough, Quad- City Metro Conference proved that this year ' s Pebbles were a superior squad. Holding their op¬ ponents to less than four points per game and av¬ eraging over thirty points themselves indicated the overall soundness of the team. With only thirty- five members on the squad, the Little Rocks used the winning combi¬ nation of hard work, de¬ termination, and courage to achieve their success. Todd Miller kicks off a winning se ason. Quarterback Tony Perkins is about to make another big play. New stars were bom and old stars shone bright under the new coach, who pos - sesses spirit, knowledge and dedication. Juniors on the squad played an important role in making the 1976-1977 season successful, with the seniors providing skill and knowledge acquired in previous seasons. Out¬ standing seniors Andrew Dribblers Swish Into Action Marshall and Alvin Pickett called success to the minds of Rocky fans, with the help of juniors Donald Mc¬ Duffie and Raymond Mus- keyvalley. The Rocks downed Dixon and Alleman early in the season, picking up first place in the Annual Turkey Tournament, held in the RIHS Field House during Thanksgiving. The Little Rocks ' bas¬ ketball season was an up- and-down one, ranging from twenty-point walk¬ overs to thrilling, over¬ time cliff-hangers. High¬ lights of the season were an early-season win over archrival Quincy, and a four-game winning-streak over the course of two January weekends. It was a tough, difficult season for Coach Rusk ' s sopho¬ mores, filled with more losing than winning. How¬ ever, the Little Rocks showed great skill, de¬ sire, hustle, and poten¬ tial. Many of this year ' s sophomores should make valuable contributions to future varsity squads. 28 Sophomore Terry Brooks fires two from outside. After a successful 1976 season. Rock Island ' s run¬ ning Rocks built towards a late season rally in 1977. Fourteen Lettermen re¬ turned to the squad, with the middle distance run¬ ners representing the larg¬ est group. The team also showed strength and con - sistency in the field events, with several re¬ turning Lettermen com¬ peting. 1977 marked the hosting of Rocky ' s first invitational track meet, and the continuation of a great winning tradition. Track practice means hard work for freshman Jeff Fout. Track 47 Harriers Set Even Pace Jim Nelson, Brian Gottwalt, and Tim Munson stretch out before practice. The 1976-77 Rocky Cross-Country season was highlighted by a frosh - soph team that won cham¬ pionships in the Metro and Big Six Conferences. The frosh-soph team also won the ten team Geneseo Invitational. The Varsity, with only two runners returning from last year, had a 6-6 record, a big improve¬ ment over last year ' s two- victory season. The Varsity squad was lead by first year senior Noah Fritz. With a strong under-class team, next year promises much success. s 48 Cross Country Rocky Girls Forge Ahead FIRST ROW: Lisa Allison, Paula Heller, Debbie Adams, Geralynn Renner, Tina Thul, Freshman, Julie Andresen, Freshman. A squad of about 55 hope - fuls reported and should add depth in all events. Track 49 Batter Up! The Varsity Baseball Team included three re¬ turning seniors, and two juniors who played Varsity last year. Captains were Scott Allen and Guy Frank. Pitching for the Rocks was Doug Brieby. They de¬ vote their life to sharing knowle¬ dge for the building and strength¬ ening of the education of the students. The days are endless for the faculty, beginning early with a check of the mailboxes; a vein of communication between admin¬ istration and staff. Through these mailboxes come endless bulletins with news of successes and fail¬ ures. The day goes on after clas¬ ses end, with corrections and grading continuing into the even¬ ing. Rock Island was the host school for the second annual Quint-City Student Leadership Seminar at the John Deere Administrative Center, which was attended by over three hundred students from nine area High Schools. October saw the Senate spon¬ soring a great week of Home¬ coming activities, culminating with the Homecoming Dance. Senate was a major supporting force in the passage of the long-awaited and much needed school tax referendum. On No¬ vember 12th, the Senate held a well attended, old-fashioned square dance in the school ca¬ feteria. Many needy families received help from the success¬ ful Thanksgiving and Christmas projects. Senators worked for and contributed to such worthy causes as the Mental Health Association and Presidential Classroom. At Christmas time it was the door-decorating con¬ test and the first annual Rocky- Alleman Christmas dance on December 19th. In February, Senate sponsored a week of ac¬ tivities centered on a Valentine theme. This year ' s Sweetheart Swirl was held March 5th at the Y.W. C.A. Another innova¬ tion from this year ' s version of student government that works was the long sought-af¬ ter Student Day held March 25th. The Senate wound up one of its busiest years ever with the Junior-Senior Prom on May 23, 1977. Pictured at the Quint-City leader¬ ship Seminar are: Alleman ' s Bill Warlop, Ann Stradley, Alleman ' s Colleen Kale, Mr. Ackerson, Cin¬ dy Boeye, and Terry Gorsuch.
