This year, however, ten students combines studies and activities and still kept up their grades. These students, led by valedictorian Craig Cox and co- salutatorians MariAnn Graham and Jon Jones, followed difficult schedules during their school years, some with as many as three x weighted classes. Mac¬ beth, Moby Dick and The Stranger posed literary chal¬ lenges, while theorems, prob¬ lems and Mr. Ryner posed mathematical ones. Chemistry and Physics focused on the sci¬ entific viewpoint; conjugated verbs and translations on the lingual outlook. Far from being bookworms and grinds, these students were involved in many other activi¬ ties as well. Band, concerts, plays and music played a part in the lives of some. Others were busy with clubs and their yearly activities. It was participation in these activities and also in class that made the lives of Rocky’s top ten students very full and busy. [ k 1. Students Achieve Scholastic Honors As seniors, students face ques¬ tions about their futures. College applications, monetary award ap¬ plications, and scholarship appli¬ cations are part of every college bound senior’s year. The founda¬ tions for this hectic year is set dur¬ ing a student’s junior year by par¬ ticipation in the National Merit Scholarship Program. Seniors who scored exceptionally high on tests given their junior year received let¬ ters of Commendation. Those who attained a specified high minimal became National Merit Semi-Fi¬ nalists. This year, Rocky had three such scholars: Dave Hughes, Jon Jones, and Eric Carlson. 1. The National Merit Semi-Finalists alias the Three Musketeers: David Hughes, Jon Jones, and Eric Carlson. 2. Seventy three students this year had culminated a grade point average of 3.5 or higher, and were inducted into the ranks of the National Honor Society. This year too, the senate took over role usually assigned to class officers. The Junior Senior Prom, a sopho¬ more mixer and graduation were all senate pro¬ jects this year. Meeting weekly, the club mem¬ bers discussed events relevent to themselves, school, and the world. In these discussions, members tried to come to a bet¬ ter understanding of themselves and others. Campus Life was not always so serious and thought provoking. Time out was taken for games and parties, with all members gladly participating. By working with assorted math problems, Fraction Faction members learned short cuts and solutions for them. Not all the meetings however, were so inclined. Parties and games were included in the meet¬ ings, some math oriented, others not. Fraction Faction’s other ac¬ tivities included a Christmas party, a spring picnic, and a hayrack ride. Homecoming 71 Organizations 73 74 Sports Sports 75 1973 Varsity Gridders Face Tough Competition The Rock Island High School varsity football team, under the direction of Gary Embertson for the seventh year, turned in a 3-6 1973 season record. What is not revealed in this record is the fact that the Rocks lost the Western Big 6 conference championship 20-17 to Quincy. Among the nine teams Rocky faced this season, they clashed with five teams who were ranked in the top 10 teams in either Illinois or Iowa. A rundown of the season looks like this: The Rocks traveled to Glen Ellen, a suburb of Chicago, for their season debut to battle the Glen Bard West powerhouse team. Although the Rocks lost this game 28-7, it was evident that they had the potential of a fine team. The next game was one all Rocky players look forward to — confrontation with our city rival, Alleman. Gliding over the Alleman Pioneers for the sixth consecutive year, Rock Island again gained the city crown and a boost in confidence for the upcoming game against Assumption. In this third game of the season, with changes in the Rock Island line-up, the game between Rocky and Assumption be¬ came a defensive battle. A hard-fought ballgame all the way, Assumption came out on top with a 10-0 victory over the Rocks. The following week, a wet field and poor playing conditions led to errors by Rock Island and allowed the Moline Maroons to barely slip one last touchdown over the Rocks for a 21-14 final Bruce Reiff Perry Scott John Medlock Mark Stevenson Ron Hudson Jeff Tubbs Dave Dorbeck Mike Heggen 76 — Varsity Scoreboard Rock Island Glen bard West 28 Rock Island 20 Alleman 6 Rock Ialnd 0 Assumption 10 Rock Island 14 Moline 21 Rock Island 7 Davenport West 42 Rock Island 17 East Moline 7 Rock Island 35 Galesburg 0 Rock Island 17 Quincy 20 Rock Island 6 Davenport Central 29 . Undoubtedly the hardest game to face in re¬ viewing the season is the game against Davenport West. The Rocks just couldn’t get it all together in this confrontation and the Iowa team sailed over Rocky with an easy 42-7 win. Determination and spirit made a victorious homecoming game possible for Rock Island in this sixth game of the season. Coming off three straight losses, the Rocks looked like a new team, dominating the entire game against East Moline, and only during the final seconds of game were the Panthers able to get on the scoreboard. This gave Rock Island their second win, 17-7, and unquestionably boosted their morale for the very important game facing them. With only three games left in the season, the Rocks knew that a victory over the Galesburg Sil¬ ver Streaks would mean a chance for a piece of the Western Big Six title. With this thought in mind, Rocky ran over their opposition for a fantastic 35- 0 final score — a spirit lifting win and making this the third strait win over Galesburg. The eighth game of the season turned out to be the most important and the most exciting. This battle of Rock Island and Quincy would deter¬ mine the Western Big Six crown. Victory was on the fingertips of the Rocks throughout the game but by a mere three points the Quincy Blue Devils managed to inch out the Rocks, bringing a dissa- pointing outcome of 20-1 7. Meeting Davenport Central, a 8-1 team and eventual Iowa State Champions is not an easy task for the final game of the season. The Rocks still managed to hold this str ong offensive team to only four touchdowns bringing the final score to 29-6. 1. Mike Heggen straightarms an Alleman opponent. 2. Head coach Hugh Johnson’s Pebbles captured crowns in both the Metropolitan and Big Six conferences. The sophomore gridders based their season on a potent running game along with a stingy defense which allowed only 57 points during the nine game schedule. Glenbard West was the first victim of the produc¬ tive Rock Island crew, as the Pebbles rolled over Glenbard by a 33-0 score. Momentum was carried into the following game with Alleman as the sophomores had little resistance in their 40-0 romp. The following week, the Rocky squad scored its third victory of the season by defeating a spirited Assumption crew 19-0. A rain-soaked Browning Field met the Rocks in their next game with the Moline Maroons. The Peb¬ bles slipped, slid, and skidded their way past Mo¬ line’s sophies 20-6, marking their fourth consecutive victory. 2. Sophomore footbatl members are: ROW 1: trainer D. Brown, trainer D. Miss Sandy Stoit, formerly an English teacher here, has joined the staff. Room 216, (remember study hall?), has been turned into a new complex of which the counselors think very highly. The complex has a room where the representatives from col¬ leges who come to Rocky can meet with interested students. There is also a library of college catalogs available to the stu¬ dent body. Department Head 210 Language Advancements in Science Department Aid Students A change in needs is a change in Science. This year Rocky’s Science Department has made sev¬ eral changes in order to keep up with the change in the needs and wants of our students. One new change is the new laser which the Advanced Physics class is using in some of their experi¬ ments. Another welcome addition to the Science Department is Mr. Terry Hunt. The things learned in Me¬ chanical Arts classes can be useful anywhere.
