Eight Given Recognition At Rocky special recognition is awarded to students excel¬ ling in commendable qualities of character. The year 1971-72 brought honors to a handful of seniors. The Daughters of the American Revolution chose Tracy Mithchell as their model of good citizenship. Traits of honesty, diligence, and responsibility led to Rocky ' s representation of Debbie Phelps and Rick Malm at Girls ' and Boys ' State. And finally, leading the graduating class of ' 71 as junior marshalls were Mike Dockterman, Lynn Foley, Mark Green- leaf, and Tracy Mitchell. Rotary Selects Eighteen Each month the Rock Island Rotary Club brings two young men from Rocky into their ranks. Senior males may qualify for this distinction through their good citizenship, promising leadership and grades throughout high school. The eighteen junior rotarians are chosen by the faculty. Junior rotarians serve as models to the male population of Rock Island High School. They are the future leaders of to¬ morrow ' s society. Student Voice Is Heard in Senate The RIHS Senate is composed of one representative per homeroom, ac¬ cumulating a total of ninty Senators. These ambassadors are chosen to be the voice of the students. The 1971-72 Senate strove to put trivia aside and concern itself with posi¬ tive protest. Major steps were taken towards revision of enforced, although non-existent school rules. Months of committee hearings were held for stu¬ dent suggestions and a final resolution was presented to the Board of Educa¬ tion. However satisfying or dissatisfy¬ ing the results were, a milestone be¬ tween students and true self-govern¬ ment was touched. The 1971-72 Senate chartered several new clubs, most concerned with human rights, among them ACLU, FREE (civil rights), and the Black Student Union. Improvements were made; table knives were allowed in the cafeteria, new locks for the girls’ gym doors were ordered, and music was piped in the cafeteria and lounge. Rocky also worked with the QCSC. UPPER RIGHT: President of the Senate, Mike Dockterman, leads the march for student government in 1971-72. CENTER RIGHT: John Cochran, was chosen as Vice- President of the school student governing body.
