Gloomy winter weather keeps the sun from shining on the familiar sight of Rocky High and the new exclusive Steepmeadow Club seen towering in the background. INTRODUCTION

A leaf on an autumn tree — singular in beauty among a host of others ... a solitary bird flies toward a faraway goal ... an actor performs alone before an audience of thousands. Solo . . . These solitary figures are executing their individual tasks solo. The leaf has a beauty all its own, contribu¬ ting to the loveliness of the whole, yet re¬ maining singular. The bird pursues its way through the tractless skies with only its judgment and instinct to guide it. The actor stands alone with the critical eyes of thou¬ sands upon him to judge how he uses the talents that he alone possesses. Solo . . . As a student at Rock Island High School, you are not unlike the leaf, the bird, or the actor. Like the leaf, you are singular in ability among the host of other students at Rocky — an individual lending your par¬ ticular talents to the success of the school. Like the bird, you head toward a distant goal that may or may not be realized de¬ pending upon how you develop your individ¬ ual talents. And like the actor, you must someday present yourself before the world o to display your abilities . . . solo. As an individual, it is up to you alone to make the most ' of your natural gifts. What you will ' do with them will decide the success or failure of your future. Wherever you go, whatever you do, the spotlight will be on you . . . solo. INTRODUCTION

COMMON SIGHTS PORTRAY BEAUTY OF ROCKY A look around Rocky’s campus will show that it is a beautiful and well-planned area. Mr. Lowe and his staff are mainly responsible for the well-kept beauty of the grounds. The first thing one would notice on the campus is the stately front of the building. The gray stone is set off by lavender, yellow, and white in the spring and red and gold in the fall. From there the brilliant green lawn leads to the stadium — the only true high school bowl in Illinois. The two student parking lots across the street from the stadium hold capacity crowds for Rock Island athletic events, many of which are held in the modern fieldhouse and student lounge wing. Following the con¬ tour of the building, one comes to the back campus that affords a splendid view of the river below. The last area completing the cir¬ cuit of the campus is the Little Theater grounds north of the building. Foliage here is colorful in spring and fall as well as impressive in winter white. After this tour, one can read¬ ily see why Rock Island High School students take such pride in their lovely grounds. The teacher’s parking lot beside the new fieldhouse provides a safe place for the faculty’s cars during school. The lovely campus in back of Rocky is seldom seen by students except during fire drills or short cuts from one wing to the other. 7 INTRODUCTION
