GILLESPIE Nutrition plays a vital part in keeping minds alert and aiding production. The cafe- teria staff, managed by Mrs. N. Gillespie, have done a magnificent job in feeding the personnel of the plant. Despite the manpower shortages, Rock Island High School's maintenance crew under the skillful manage- ment of Mr. Schroeder have kept up the plant and grounds, making possible maximum production. An efficient war plant today must be so or- ganized that qualified persons supervise its production. Thus it is with our high school. Those students who have succeeded in passing the requirements of the National Honor So- ciety have the privilege of being looked upon as the efficiency experts of Rock Island High School. This year forty-five students of the graduat- ing class were found to be Worthy of the honor of being elected members of the society. Of this number twenty-two were automatically selected because of scholastic averages of 92 or above. The remaining members were elected by a vote cast by the members of the upper third of the senior class. The National Honor Society was founded in 1903 to place more emphasis on the scholastic field and also to increase interest in the many functions of high school life. The society was introduced at Rock Island High School in 1937, and since that time one-tenth of each senior class have been admitted as members. It is these high-ranking workers who will be the leaders in today's world at war and in tomorrow's world at peace. Those not present when the National Honor Society picture was taken were: Edward Cramer, Virginia Denecke, Theresa DeSmet, Lyle Forward, Harry Holmes, Jack Lofgren, Vivian Pontikes, Martha Richeson, Carl Stone.
