Hanson's job. His work and the work of our board of di- rectors truly deserve an UE for Effi- ciency. These executives have zealously tackled the many problems confronting War-time directors and have tried, suc- cessfully in a majority of cases, to an- ticipate the questions and problems of youth in war time. Their efforts also have aided our country in its anti- juvenile delinquency campaign, for they well realize that the products turned out here Will not only serve in helping to Win the War, but will be a deciding factor in keeping the peace after the war. EARL H. HANSON Through them, all classes have been put on an efficient war-time schedule, utilizing every moment to bring us closer to that day when our efforts can again be turned to education for nor- mal times. Wright, principal. Under Mr. Wright's efficient direction, Rock Island High School is training on the average of fifteen hundred students a year. Be- cause of the three years spent at Rocky High, this year's graduates will take their places with confidence as mem- bers of the armed forces and as war workers. Two able assistants to Mr. Wright are his personnel managers, Miss Florence Liebbe, dean of girls, and Mr. E. S. Metcalf, dean of boys The personal and individual prob- lems of every worker attending this school are given complete, fair, and considerate attention by our personnel managers. To them should go a special award for making possible efficiency in production. OWEN B. WRIGHT E. S. METCALF FLORENCE LIEBBE ?oremen First Row HAROLD V. ALMQUIST GEORGE D. BAIRD Second Row GEORGE A. An efficient war plant today must be so or- ganized that qualified persons supervise its production. Thus it is with our high school. Those students who have succeeded in passing the requirements of the National Honor So- ciety have the privilege of being looked upon as the efficiency experts of Rock Island High School. This year forty-five students of the graduat- ing class were found to be Worthy of the honor of being elected members of the society. Of this number twenty-two were automatically selected because of scholastic averages of 92 or above. The remaining members were elected by a vote cast by the members of the upper third of the senior class. The National Honor Society was founded in 1903 to place more emphasis on the scholastic field and also to increase interest in the many functions of high school life. The society was introduced at Rock Island High School in 1937, and since that time one-tenth of each senior class have been admitted as members. It is these high-ranking workers who will be the leaders in today's world at war and in tomorrow's world at peace. Those not present when the National Honor Society picture was taken were: Edward Cramer, Virginia Denecke, Theresa DeSmet, Lyle Forward, Harry Holmes, Jack Lofgren, Vivian Pontikes, Martha Richeson, Carl Stone. Just as all war plants have a representative clearance board, composed of employers and employees who settle pro- duction problems, so Rock Is- land High School has its stu- dent governing boardg namely, the Senate. Student problems are brought to the Senate meetings, where they are first discussed and then acted upon. One of the outstanding fea- tures of Senate activities is the sponsoring of Old-Clothes Day. This year the junior and sophomore classes have taken leading roles in our production ef- forts. Because so many of the senior boys have gone into the armed services, many of the jobs they formerly held are going to industrious underclassmen. Especially in the Held of athletics have the juniors made themselves felt. They are rapid- ly becoming the leaders of clubs and groups and are well represented in all phases of school life. The sophomores too have been pressed into emergency service and form an integral part of our educational system. Among the activities sponsored by the junior and sophomore classes are their very success- ful school parties. The juniors also presented their sparkling comedy, The Fighting Littlesf' It is with the calm certainty of a bright fu- ture that Rocky High can look to the junior and sophomore classes for leadership. 0 Left to right: M. 'M I ' A K X bi V Coaching Staff HAROLD V. ALMQUIST Concluding another eventful season at Rock Island High School is Harold V. Almquist, head coach. This ends his third year of building better winning teams for Rocky High. Coach Almquist has always been a great sports enthusiast and while attending East High School in Minneapolis, Minnesota, he won the trophy awarded the most outstanding athlete and stu ent. Befor coming to Rock Island Senior High, he was coach at Augustana College. Coach Almquist stops at no small goal, his greatest ambition is to see his team play in the Rose Bowl some day. Listening to radios and tinkering with them takes up a lot of his spare time. The first radio program he ever heard was over WOC on one of those new-fangled crystal sets. He has had a hand in just about everything, he has even been a news butcher on a train. The Rock Island-Galesburg game marks the Hrst time any team has scored on our team in our own stadium since Coach Almquist has been here. Lester T. Glick is just completing his first year as assistant coach at Rock Island Senior High, but already he has done much to help Rocky's athletic teams come out on top. Previously he was sophomore coach, along with Julien C. Peterson. He held this posi- tion for six years, during which time he taught science at Washington Junior High. Any sport in season is usually his favorite, although basketball gets a little more attention than the rest. Mr. Glick attended the University of Iowa and also State Teachers College in Bemidji, Minnesota. While living in Iowa he won the Golden Gloves Championship, and he has also played professional baseball. Playing with his son takes up a lot of his extra moments, but when any excess time is found, he spends it sleeping. During his teaching career, he has taught various subjects, too numerous to mention. At the present time he teaches the newly intro- duced pre-flight aeronautics course. LESTER T. GLICK Julien C. Peterson In the 1943 fall season, Rock Island's sopho- more football squad shared first-place honors with Moline in the Northwest Conference. Coached by Julien Peterson and Ray Collins, the little Rocks compiled a season's record of four wins and three losses. The yearlings were led by Gerald Herman, pint-sized halfback, who became known as the To'chdown Kid because of his long scoring ru Bill Armstrong, signal-calling quarterback, and Joe Dillon, another speedy halfback, were teamed with Waldo Schneider to make up the ball-carrying unit. Schneider was occasionally borrowed by the varsity to kick off for them. As the football togs were put away and basketball u n i f o r m s made their appearance, Coach Ray Collins got together a willing and eager team which made up in fight for its inex- perience. W a l d o Schneider, towering center, and Vernon Staelens, hot- shot forward, led the cagers, with Jim Red- dig, Harry Bolinger, and Don Miller making up the quintet at the outset of the season. In mid-season, Stae- lens was elevated to the varsity and Schneider, along with Ellsworth Mil- ton, was lost to the squad because of graduation to the junior class. The soph team was hard hit by the loss of these key men and was knocked off stride. Bob Sen- dek and Miller took over the scoring duties and the team continued through a season of 4 wins in 16 starts. One of the consoling features of the season was a 33-27 last-minute victory over Davenport. Walter L. Kimmel At the ends, Jim Reddig and Lee Evans took care of the receiv- ing department. In the line, where the heavy duty is done and sel- dom recognized, Bill Foy, Bob Bennett, Jay Melow, and Pete Gre- vas turned in sterling performances of de- fense. Jack Ingram, scrappy center, held up the center of the space line. A 65-yard run back of a kick in a Daven- port game, by Herman, and a 50-yard pass from Schneider to Reddig for a touchdown in a Moline game, were highlights of a busy season. :.:.5.3.,.:.5.g.- - - . . These are classed as losses on our record, but when considered from the standpoint of mo- rale, they might well be classed as two dis- tinct victories. As long as football continues in Rock Island, the Davenport game will not be forgotten, for there in the goal-line stand, when Davenport was within inches of scoring again, is an ex- cellent example of the spirit of Rocky High. Davenport was one of the most outstanding teams on this year's schedule, and this fact should not be forgotten when reviewing the scores. Kewanee, which had a remarkable team built around Ed Tunnicliif, was perhaps the fastest of any team we met this year and had the most will-to-win. Galesburg, which later defeated Kewanee and so gave Rock Island a share in Northwest Conference, had one of the finest teams to enter the Rock Island bowl. In this game Rock Island was scored upon on its home field for the first time since Coach Almquist has been here, Team members and coaches say that that game could easily have ended differently. Rock Island High School's 1943 football sea- son ended when they met Quincy on a day of real trial for the team members. In 1942 we had a perfect season until we met the powerful Quincy team at Quincy. This year again it was an all-round team that the Rocks met. The season ended happily, however, when Rock Island defeated Quincy 14-7. Coach Almquist and his team have no reason to make apologies for this season of football. The team was rated fourth in the state of Illi- nois and, of course, rated first with the stu- dents of Rocky High. Coach Almquist had in Rock Island a truly great team. May 1944 prove as successful. Lemont 0 Rock Island 87 Scoring four touchdowns in the first quarter of the game, the Rocks rolled on to pile up the biggest score in modern football history at Rock Island. East Peoria 0 Rock Island 18 East Peoria gave the Rocks a real game but finally fell to their powerful running attack. The Islanders proved their power by not hav- ing to punt out of danger during the whole game. Davenport 6 Rock Island 2 Winning on a still disputed touchdown pass, the Blue Devils were rather lucky at Daven- port. The Islanders' only score came by way of a safety made early in the second half when the Rocks trapped a Davenport man behind his own goal. Kewanee 20 Rock Island 19 The Crimson and Gold warriors lost the sea- son's heartbreaker to a very determined Boil- ermaker squad. Behind 20 to 7 at the half, the Rocks came back, almost tying the ball game in the second half. Galesburg 7 Rock Island 14 Galesburg was the first team to score on the Rocks' home field in three seasons. The Burg- ers employed a baffling offense in the first Seann Q4 Record half, and it took the Islanders a while to figure it out. The Crimson and Gold men surged back in the second half to win their own homecoming game. Moline 0 Rock Island 26 The Rocks powered their way to their third straight victory over the Maroons in three years. The Moline game is always a hard fought one no matter who wins, and the 1943 game was no exception. Fine passing, block- ing, and running highlighted the Islanders, at- tack. Roosevelt 0 Rock Island 26 The Rocks won this one without having to dig very deep into their bag of tricks. East Moline 0 Rock Island 26 The Crimson and Gold warriors seemed to feel their power about this time of the season and simply surged up and down the Hilltop- pers' field with comparative ease. Fine block- ing and running were evident. Quincy 7 Rock Island 14 On a very muddy field, the two teams' fine running and passing attacks were bogged down considerably. After winning from Quincy, the Islanders were rated third best in the state, for they were the only team in Illinois to de- feat the Gem City boys. Though the 1943 Is- lander football squad was comparatively inexperi- enced, several of its mem- bers received mention on all-state teams. Jerry Russ, senior end, was awarded a place on the Chicago Daily News' all-state team. Howard Hankins and Duwain Dunklau received honor- able mention. Johnny Ahl was select- ed captain of this year's football squad. JERRY RUSS All state JOHN AHL Captam From left to right: E. Fitzpatrick, C. Marsh, and N. Palmer. Not all the credit for good cheering, however, goes to the senior cheerleaders, for the sophomore leaders, too, deserve their share of praise. These stu- dents have worked long and faithfully to be prepared for the day when they will take their place as varsity cheer- leaders. Not only have they been on hand at the games, but they have also worked in co-opera- tion with the varsity leaders in actually leading cheers, and have aided greatly in building up the morale among members of the sophomore squads. Leading cheers to bol- ster the morale of Rocky High's athletic teams is the difficult task that con- fronts the varsity cheer- leaders. Full of pep and enthusiasm, and wearing their smart new uniforms, these people are always out there pitching, rain or shine. Not only have they done their full share at all the football and bas- ketball games of the sea- son, but they have also participated in numerous pep assemblies where, un- der their expert directing, the student body really 'Kgives out with yells. Although it was not possible to have a Home- coming parade this year because of war-time re- strictions, the traditional crowning of a king and queen to reign over Homecoming activities did take place. This year's royal couple were King John Ahl and Queen Mar- gery Tyler. The identity of the Homecoming royalty was revealed to the student body of Rocky High at an all-school assembly. After her Coronation the Queen gave her official command -to defeat Galesburg. The command was carried out when the Rock Island football team defeated Galesburg by a score of 14-7. Queen Margery, accompanied by her royal attendants, Norma Palmer and Carol Crawshaw, reviewed her loyal subjects on the battlefield and assured them of success at the Rock Is- land-Galesburg game. Then, with the cheers of vic- tory still ringing in their ears, the royal couple acted as hosts at the Homecoming dance in the high school cafeteria. The peak of activity was reached when the couple led the grand march. Homecoming festivities were under the direction of The Crimson Crier. With Jerry Russ and John Ahl the only veterans returning from the 1942-1943 quintet, and Ahl due to graduate in January, Coach Almquist experimented and by mid-season had molded together a combination of two seniors, two juniors, and a sophomore. Starting the season with a team including Jerry Russ, John Ahl, Jerry Evans, Warren Heimbeck, and Mel Montz, Coach Almquist elevated Vernon Staelens from the sophomore squad just before the finish of the semester that brought the end of John Ahl's playing days at Rocky High. Staelens played like a veteran the remainder of the season and, with Montz, was given hon- orable mention on an all-state team. The team had several good reserves. Bob Schmidt a junior, contended with Jerry Russ for center position throughout the campaign. Tom Wich, a senior, improved steadily during the season and was the handy man. Five juni- ors rounded out the main reserves. Montz led the Islander scorers, with Heim- beck a close second. Accurate free throwing was a highlight of the season. C'roAA Count 9 The cross-country team, under the coach- ing of Kenneth E. Greene, turned in a fine record this year. They won twice over Geneseo, with Russell Summerhayes captur- ing a first in both meets. They also came in third in the Northwest Conference, with Sum- merhayes coming in second place. Juniors have again taken over slots previously filled by seniors. Dick Oglebay took over the broad jumping position that was held by Jim Holland, and Charles Schweiss literally ran into the spotlightls beam as this year's outstanding miler. John Davidson, Bill Stevens, and Bob Schmidt also turned in good records in field events. Tossing the most weight around this year were Bob Schmidt and Sam Strum. The Sophomore track squad took no back seat this year either. With the excellent record of last year's team to live up to, the sophomores put on a good show. Last yearls sophomore stars are today's varsity leaders. First row, left to right: V. Otto. B. Garrison, B. Ramsdale, G. Bar- tell, C. Hartman, S. Johnson, D. Crouse. K. Petersen, and D. Thompson. Manpower shortages have hit the golf team hard this spring. Only fourteen men reported for practice. Top players were J oe Sesbeau, Bob Downing, Bob Duncan, Don Mil- ler, Bill Mosenfelder, and Gene Littig. The low score of 87 was reached in their first spring meet. go! From left to right: D. In dual meets they won seven, lost one, and tied one against Davenport, Clinton, Galesburg, and Maquoketa. They were beaten by Davenport and tied by Maquoketa but gave Davenport two defeats and one to Maquoketa. They won a quadrangular meet composed of Clinton, Davenport, Maquo- keta, and Rock Island and secured second place in the Champaign meet, which represented the best teams in the state. In the Champaign invitational tournament, which took the place of the state tournament, many of Rocky's wrestlers placed. Bill Albright took first in the 105-pound class, Paul Wilkins, 95-pound class, and Leo Dasso, 175-pound class, took seconds. Glen McCarty, 115- pound class, Glen Wilkins, 135-pound class, and Bob Bennett, 155-pound class, took thirds. Ed Blaser, 145-pound class, and Art Johnston, 165-pound class, took fourth places. The boys, tennis team came through the season with flying colors and captured first place in the Northwest Conference. The team this year played one of the most difficult schedules yet attempted. Evanston, Peo- ria, Burlington, Davenport, and Moline are examples of the tough opposition faced by the team. Ted Hainline officially took over the boys' tennis squad during the fall season and aided greatly in making this year a success. The late Paul Comer started out as coach of both boys' and girls' tennis squads in the spring season. The boys Weren't the only successful ones this year as the girls, ten- nis squad also took first place in the Northwest Conference. They also placed second in the Quad-City conference. This realization guides Vera Homrighous and Kenneth E. Greene in planning the physical education program for Rocky High. Obstacle courses, body-build- ing exercises, and endurance tests are a few of the devices employed by the instructors. During gym periods basket- ball, volleyball, and many other sports are offered. In the spring and fall of the year the gym classes participate in such sports as football, archery, hockey, track, and baseball. Intramural activities provide participation in athletics other than that offered in varsity sports. Throughout the year basketball, volleyball, ping- pong, track, and baseball sched- ules have been arranged. The building of strong bodies is thus included in the educa- tional policies of our plant so that we may maintain a healthy, efficient personnel. l7laqAical ?itne A Robert Brewer Left to right: J. R. One of the most successful seasons of Rock Island High School's dramatic department has just been concluded. The Dramatic Club play, Papa Is All, a comedy with a Pennsylvania-Dutch back- ground, gave the cast a rare chance to use all their ingenu- ity in the adoption of Dutch accents. Then the Speech classes presented their evening of fun, at which four one-act comedies were staged . 4'The Fighting Littlesn came into their own when the Junior Class produced this three-act comedy in the high school audi- torium. Climaxing the departmentls achievements was the Senior Class play The Man Who Came To Dinner. Thus did our plant's speech department earn its MEM for excellence and efficiency. Willis Otto portrayed the character of Sheridan Whiteside, world-renowned critic, lecturer, wit, radio orator, and intimate 'ffriendu of the great and small. Whiteside is a sarcastic and at times quite disagree- able sort of person. When he slips on a piece of ice in front of the Ernest Stanley residence, while on a lecture tour, and fractures his hip, the entire nation as well as the Stanley household is thrown into com- plete confusion because of the presence in the Stanley home of this celebrated person. The doctor gives strict orders that Whiteside is not to be moved for at least ten days. The entire Stanley home, with its rooms and facilities, is then Hconfis- cated by the visitor and his associates. Maggie Cutler fMargery Tylerj, Whitesideis efficient young secre- tary, meets a pleasing young news- paper reporter, Bert Jefferson tTed Hainlinej, and they fall in love with each other. Whiteside fearing that he will have to train a new secretary if Maggie marries Bert, attempts to break up the friendship. He sends for Lorraine Sheldon fMarilyn Andersonj, a glamorous American actress and close friend, to come and act in a play that Bert has written, thinking that by doing this he can accomplish his real pur- pose of splitting up Bert and Maggie. Berchekas, the Rock Island High School Concert Band has come through another eventful year with flying colors. With two concerts behind them, members of the band have once more proved themselves masters of music. The fall con- cert was held December 16, 1943, and the spring concert was held on May 11, 1944. Each was a great success. Command performances were played at the Rotary Club, Kiwanis Club, American Legion, and in the high school auditorium. In the field of sports, the band has proved to be the men behind the men behind the football. At each Rock Island game the band played before the game time and between halves. They went through their formations and routines with perfect timing. At the basketball games, they were represented by the girls, brass quintet.
