NQRTHWEST REPRESENTATLVES Our contestants in Northwest Conference competition were as fol- lows: Leota llae Harris, Declamationg Jerry Riag- gid, Oratoryg Dick Lang- hinrichs, Extemporeg and lllildred lIcKay, Stenography. Leota Klae tied for first place, giving her selection, HA lvlinuetf' hy Louis N. Parker. The contest was held in our audi- torium and there was some very stid competition for our own very versatile Bliss Harris, but in spite of this she came out on top even with Dawn Ver- muelen of lloline. Another tie was present in the North-l west Extempore contest held in Galesburg on April 19. Dick tied for top ranking with Bob Eagle of bfloline. His topic was United States Naval Policyfl An interesting thing about this contest was the fact that our representative would have had an undis- puted tirst had he not been penalized one point for speaking five seconds overtime. Jerry llflaggid, who was R. I. repre- sentative in the Northwest Oratory contest, came home with a silver medal, signifying that he had captured second place in this forensic activity. Our stenographic contestant who was chosen for North- west competition was llflil- dred lIcKay. She came Gut with fourth indi- E vidual place in the meet held in llonmouth on April O.

Such were the phrases quoted by the girls on the declamation team when they again had a gold star added to their his- tory. Capturing second place in the tri- angular contest between llfloline and East llfloline, they climaxed their season by tying for first place in the Northwest Conference. The debate squad had another success- ful year, winning 20 out of 34 debates. Under the two capable captains lVIar- garet Ford, affirmative, and Dick Lang- hinrichs, negative, the team captured third place in the Northwest Con- ference. The other meet was held at Augustana College and they won high honors there also. The subject was, Resolved, that the several states shall adopt a unicameral system of legisla- tion.', The squad is coached by P. J. Martiri. DEBATE
