Vihat a husy little little lady shels been, pounding the gavel for Girls' Hi-Y, taking leading roles in many plays, and trilling gaily in the Glee Club. She has rightfully earned her title of the most popular girl in school. The good-looking hoy with her is none other than Frank Forward, president of the Boys' Hi-Y. The two midgets are Bliriam Cdlinnieb Klaxwell and Pauline Zimmer. Kliriam is chief of the Blackhawk 'lfrilbe and does a nice joh of handling those Cwildj ln- dians. She ejected her pleasing personality on the stage several times and scored heavily. Any organization that wants things calls on Pauline Zimmer. The journalism department, Girls' Hi-Y, Dramatic Cluh, and others are grateful for her help. John lSonino's middle name is l'president. He was elected president of the junior class last year and the Senior class this year. He calls the meeting to order for the Dramatic Cluh and as a husiness manager for plays he's tops. Helen Passmore is an important person in the jour- nalism department. Last year she was editor of the Bi- Wfeekly and this year she heads the annual start. She also hits a high Cl in the Glee Cluh. Over in the corner are -Ierry llaggid. Leota Klae Harris. and Dick Langhinrichs. These three people have distinguished themselves in many fields, especially forensics. Besides heing Xorthwest Representative in Uratory, Alerry has been active in the music and journalism departments. Leota llae is one of the few to have two first-place medals in the Northwest Declamation Conference. She was editor of the Bi-Wveekly last year and associate editor WE HONCDR YOU of the annual this year. Her 'iGranny Painsherryn won acting honors and since then she has successfully emoted many times. Dick Langhinrichs has had important roles in many plays and was successful in oratory and debate for three years. This year he is captain of the negative team. He is to be commended also for his work in the Glee Club. Dick Hainline, president of the Senate and champion tennis player, was voted the most popular boy in school. His performances on the stage have caused many girls, hearts to beat faster. The lovable lllarge Chaney is pic- tured with him. llarge was vice-president of the Girls' Hi-Y last year and is secretary of the Senate. David fScottyj Terry and Ellen Spinsby have played opposite each other on the stage and did it so successfully that they continued it off the stage too. Ellen is on the declamation team, and lends a helping hand to any organi- zation that needs it. Scotty gave outstanding portrayals in UThe Vagabondu and Death Takes a Holidayfy He also struts his stuff during track season. Fal VVood and Dorothy Howe head the Boys, and Girls' Glee Clubs. They handled these important posi- tions very capably. Jean Krick and Barbara Fry are two girls who deserve a big hand. Jean has been behind the scenes for many a dramatic production, helping bliss Pete. She rates high in the Glee' Club and-she is the Valedictorian of the school. Take a bow, Jean! hluch of the credit for the musical successes of our school goes to Barbara Fry, who accompanies the Glee Club. Her flying fingers add a great deal to any performance. These are the people who have set precedents for future classes of our school. Lofty, leading seniors . . . VVe Honor You. FAREWELL, DEAR SEINIICRS Ch, seniors, now we see you go Step by step and row by row. The charming Marge Chaney and her court, How we will miss you and your sort! Then next the highstepping Harber Hall Who likes the Big apple much to call. O'boy, that Zimmer, see her go! Down to the library to study? Oh, no! And then Dave Terry of the golden locks, It's Ellen Spinsby for him who's tops. Then Barbara Fry and her tripping fingers And the great Fal Wood who around her lingers. Frank Forward for Jean Krick does go, But so did Howie Franck, we know. Then beautiful Shirley with glorious acting, And Byron Swedberg whom she's been attracting. The blond Tom Trafton on fact is feedingg He will not pause till his brains are leading. Ted Aguels voice rings mellow and blueg To Dorothy Howe we thought he was true. Now sweet little Leota with freckles galore, But David Handelman doesn't care if there's more Stanford Barker with his beautiful voice From blondes especially makes his choice. Sam and llfliriam of the Hi-De Ho, When they get together, just watch them go! Jerry lVIaggid and his violin The hearts of people and nations will win. Helen Passmore, she of the hustling air, Claims to ignore the boys, an attitude rare. Good-bye to you, welll miss you much. Farewell, toodle-oo, and more of such. The contest was held in our audi- torium and there was some very stid competition for our own very versatile Bliss Harris, but in spite of this she came out on top even with Dawn Ver- muelen of lloline. Another tie was present in the North-l west Extempore contest held in Galesburg on April 19. Dick tied for top ranking with Bob Eagle of bfloline. His topic was United States Naval Policyfl An interesting thing about this contest was the fact that our representative would have had an undis- puted tirst had he not been penalized one point for speaking five seconds overtime. Jerry llflaggid, who was R. I. repre- sentative in the Northwest Oratory contest, came home with a silver medal, signifying that he had captured second place in this forensic activity. The other meet was held at Augustana College and they won high honors there also. The subject was, Resolved, that the several states shall adopt a unicameral system of legisla- tion.', The squad is coached by P. J. Martiri. DEBATE BOYS' CDRATCRV A feather in their cap was given to the boys' oratory team when they won first place in the triangular meet be- tween lloline and East lloline. Three of the boys who went to lloline took first, second and third place, respective- ly, and the three who orated at Rock Island also captured hrst, second and third. Jerome llaggid, as Northwest repre- sentative, came home with honors, as he won second place in the Northwest Con- ference. Since variety is the spice of life, the team spoke o-n everything from history- making to automobile accidents. The team and their orations are as follows: Jerome lllaggid, UTlie lllonster in the Public Squaref, James Haymaker, Hliloody Altarsf' Scotty Terry, i'Youth Speaksf, Carl Welch, 'jean Valjeanfl Dick Langhinrichs, The Crisis in Charac- terf' Dick Hainline, f'Convict 9653.y' EXTEMI3 'fSuccess'y was the keynote of the ex- temp team this year, and success it was. YVithin the span of two weeks the team began and finished with the results being very satisfactory. Rock Island took first place in the contests with lwoline and Galesburg, and the grand finale of the season was scored when Richard Langhinrichs, as our representative, took first in the Northwest Conference. Louis Pesses and Lucille Brotman also received honors, Louis tying for third place at Galesburg, and Lucille taking third place at hloline. Others who gave a good showing were Justin Rinehart and Dorothy Zimmer. . l21.,p, P--, ,..+ f 1 JUNIOR CLASS PLAY i'Your Uncle Dudley, a light comedy filled with rollicking humor, was pre- sented by the junior class, hlarch II. Uncle Dudley, a bachelor, who was called upon for both devotion of time and financial assistance for various civic activities, was very ably portrayed by Carl UXVil- lumw XVelch. His interest in the fairer sex proved to be Rlargaret Ford, playing the part of Christine Sederholm. The Church family, to whom 'ADudley is related. consists of Dorothy Boyd as Klabel Church, the dominating mother, Juanita Potter as Ethelyn. her talented daughterg and Bill Johnson as Cyril, her teen-age son. VW: mustnlt forget the fine characterization of planet Dixon, the grandmother, played by Janet Swanson. Helping to sum up a well-picked cast are David Sturgis, man-about- town, Charlie Post, and Justin Reinhart, who supplied the romantic interest of the story by portraying Robert Kirby. SENIOR CLASS PLAY The successful play f'Smilin, Through, given by the senior class of IQ3O, still proved to be a favorite when the 1938 senior class presented it May 6. The lilting strains of the melody f'Smilin' Through, the lovely costumes and a beautiful garden setting provided a pleasing atmosphere, which will not soon be for- gotten. Those who very capably portrayed the characters were: Shirley Hallgren, known for her fine performances in several other prominent plays, now claiming the part of lovely Moonyeen Clare, talented Dick Langhinrichs, portraying the character John Carteret, Nloonyeenls fiance, and Howard Franck, noted for his splendid character roles, all featured players. David 'lScotty,' Terry, very ably handling-a double role, that of Jeremiah VVayne, the father, and Kenneth VVayne, the son, displayed more of his Hne dramatic ability, as did Miriam llflaxwell, his spirited Kathleen. Curtis. Although it was a huge undertaking, the Glee Clubs carried it off with their usual finesse and success. Under the direction of William G. Rozeboom the cast and chorus presented some of the loveliest music ever to have been given by this organi- zation. The story takes place in 17th century France, and the setting was exceedingly beautiful, the new backdrop being used to good advantage. It is all centered in the courtyard of an old inn, with a pleasing conglamoration of Virginia Seller's sweet trills, Ted Ague's heart-warming tones, Howie Francks' splendid characterizing, Dick Langhinrich's and Jerry Maggid's downright hilarity, and all of the pleasantries offered by the remainder of the cast, including Margaret Ford, Clifford Myers, Jean Krick, Fal Wood, Helen Passmore, lVIargaret Hoare, Buster Anderson, Clifford Vogt, David Handelman, Justin Reinhart, Betty lVIead, llliary Lee Szekely, and Donald Davis. In addition to the Hne vocal music which was a feature of this performance, there was an orchestra of finer caliber than those of former years. This was due to the fact that many of its members were recruited from outside sources. A great deal of credit for the success of the light opera should be given to Miss Virginia Bode, girls' gym instructor, and Mr. P. J. Martin, forensics coach, for their conscientious and valuable assistance. Mr. Martin was in charge of dramatics, and lVIiss Bode was in charge of dances and stage movements. Dorothy Howe and Fal Wood, presidents of the boys and girls glee clubs, respectively, were student directors for the production. Personnel of Conner! Band I? No doubt, the out- standing event of the season was the Northwest District Contest which was held in Rock Island, March 25 and 26, at which Rock Island won high honors, first in the main contest and second in sight reading. Also the annual fall and spring concerts won the praise of the community. TRIO On this page we find the girls of Rock Island High School in predominance. In the top picture is a group which has been very active in music circles of our school this year, the girls' trio, composed of Margaret Ford, Jean Krick, and Helen Passmore. Their pro- grams have been numerous and varied, since they were sent to many places where it would have been impos- sible to take the larger groups of the Glee Clubs. This is the first year that this department of the Glee Club has really had an active part in the music curriculum. Their work has been so successful that it is believed that next year will find a continuance of this same plan with girls taking the places of Jean and Helen, the graduating seniors. STENQGRAPI-IIC TEAM These girls worked many long hours to prepare themselves as a team for entrance in Northwest Steno- graphic competition. Under the capable guiding hand of Miss Carrie Eckblad these girls typed themselves into second place in the contest held in lllonmouth on Saturday, April 9. The girls on our team who Worked to gain points for us in our Northwest Conference were Mildred 1XIcKay, our Northwest Conference representative, Goldie Blitz, and Gertrude Bloom, with Betty Laven- dar as alternate. ,V-fv.,W , 1 S. v , -f -A :rf 551, . This was the first time in twenty odd years that a Rock Island team has gone to the finals. During the regular season the Islanders fell victims to Galesburg twice. Then when the pairings were made for the state finals it was found that Rock Island was again to meet the Silver Streaks. Rock Island trailed at the end of the first quarter 3-2 but they came back in the second stanza to deadlock the score 7f7 at halftime. The Crimson went on a brief scoring spree in the third quarter and outscored Galesburg nine points to seven and led 16-14, going into the fourth quarter. The Siwash turned on the heat, though, in the last period and eked out a 23-21 victory. TRACK Since the track season this year was in progress past the date of our deadline, it was impossible to include a full set of Writeups or pictures. Setting an object to which future players may aspire, Phil Blasig, honor- ary captain, and end on the team, pre- sented a trophy to the school. This trophy is to be awarded each year to the outstanding defense player of the season. Judges will be the coaching staff. This will be known as the R. l. Blasig award. Inspired by the splendid support and eo-operation of the town's people, the squad played a brand of ball far superior to any seen before. VVinning the regional tournament for the first time in twenty years, our boys started a custom which we can always observe-go to state. Losing practically the entire team by graduation, Coach Scan will well find it pretty hard to build up a team next year. However, since Scan formed a miracle team around only one veteran player, he probably will produce winners in next yearls competition. SOPHOMORES During the regular season our team Won 6 and lost IO for a percentage of .375. They made up for this in the t0ur- nament warfare. Led by Don Tufts, the team conquered Reynolds, Orion, East Moline and at the sectional, Viola, Galva, and Fulton, in the order named. At the hnals at Champaign we lost in the first round to Galeshurg by a score of 23w21. High honors go to Don Tufts who led the team in scoring and was placed on the Honorary All-State Second Team. ROCK ISLAND I-IIGI-l SCHOOL MARC!-IES ON! Gee! Senior assembly. lt can not was. Seems only yesterday we yelled ourselves hoarse for good, old Rocky High. QEven dimmed the lights, oncelj Come to think of it, we had just loads of swell assembly programs this year. The Browne and Menely entertainers surely could tickle the ivories. Then, when various organizations were represented, we even let the little sophies declare them- selves in the form of the president of Alpha Club. Oh, and we can't forget Mr. Harry C. White, who gave an electrical demonstration on October 25, proving to the unbe- lieving sophies, Cseniors as well, though we wouldn't admit itj that black is white. Hm, we seniors knew it all the time. But everyone, seniors included, Was on the edge of his seat when Bflr. White nonchalantly tossed a 1,000 watt bulb up in the air, and Qthank heavensll caught it. He smilingly explained to us that there was enough explosive in it to blow up the whole school. A new school, tool We have to hand it to Professor William G. Rozeboom for directing our won- derful choir in the assembly November 19th. E-e-e-o-o-W-wi A blood-curdling scream rent the air, a crash, a shot, and the Hanscum players reached the climax of their thrilling murder-mystery which sent cold shivers up and down our spines. Remember the darling coeds from Drake University? It seems all the boys were intent upon going to Drake University after that assembly. I don't blame them. I sorta, been considerin' it myself, if their male quartet are examples of their college lads. The Frank and Hammond team struck the student bodyls fancy, too, it seems, with their variety of musical selections. More than one student walked out of honor awards assembly, beaming, and proud to possess a letter of Rock Island high school. Every one of them deserved it too. VVe salute you, boys. f'The worst fall of all, is when you fall in love,,' stated Dr. Tischner of Chicago, who enlightened many a student on the perplexing problems of love and friendship between high school boys and girls, January 31. Blessed with a fine sense of humor, her talk made a hit with student body and faculty, alike. The highlight of the Year was the amateur show put over in fine style by a prominent member of our faculty, Mr. Pete.', CML Peterson to you Sophiesj.
