Text from Pages 1 - 76 of the 1951 volume:

Before you begin your stroll through memories' garden, you must remember that you are trespassing on Indian territory, or territory of the famous Redmen. The path will lead you first to the steps of the homelike building where the tribe gained knowledge to help them over the barriers ahead. As you pass the chief's friendly smile, the ambitious tribe will stand out as warriors against all evil. Then as the ..appy faces blur, you may find yourself strolling down some well-worn lane to see fellow tribesmen busy at work sewing garments, getting exercise, beating tomtoms, or you'll find yourself on the field, the score tied, and you in possession of the ball. When the last scene is past, your eyelids will slowly close and with a smile you will vision the Redmen of the future. The garden of memory is limitless, therefore you need not follow the landmarks in order. On every hand will lie things unseen by all but you, so since time is the essence of all memories, stroll leisurely as you go. 1 1 Annual Staff Co-Editors . . . • Business Managers Class Prophecy . . FRANCES BRACKMAN Commerce 7 Honors Valedictorian-Jim Steed Thoreau has said that, Books are the treasured wealth of the world. Jim, perhaps more than any other member of the class, has been enriched by his continual access to the world of thought as he finds it through his extensive reading. Finely analytical and deeply philosophical, his thinking pushes out far into the great currents of present day thought. His majors and minors clearly indicate the specific trend of his thinking toward the scientific, and those who know Jim are sure that he will not cease his schooling until the desired mastery of his field is attained. Salu ta toria n-Georgia n na A bra ms It is said that the secret of great men's success is work, work, and more work. If this is the determining factor, Georgianna should achieve greatness in her future work. It is undoubtedly this diligence factor that helped her win the honor salutatorian. Her quick laughter and easy air of friendliness have won her a place in the hearts of all her associates. Those of us who have shared her acquaintance expect great things from her. Capt. of All-County Team-Cecil Wilds • Though the world needs its men of stirring oratory and sparkling personality, it calls out with equal urgency to its soft-spoken, unassuming sons whose talent lies in the quiet, the earnest presentation of thoughtful truth that moulds the minds and destinies of youth. If you ask him what he thinks of basketball he'll reply: That's my life ! He also contends that the secret of happiness is not in doing what one likes to do, but in liking what one has to do. 8 10 11 12 I BILLY HUTCHINSON 14 15 16 HELEN MULLINS 18 Class History A column of smoke rose beyond the distant hill and captured the attention of a group of tourists who were touring the Indian Territory of Ohio. As the group looked toward the horizon with all eyes fixed on the column of smoke, the guide explained it was the Rock Hill Tribe calling together its session of learning for another nine moons. The guide told the following story: Many moons ago three columns of smoke could be seen rising in the distance. They were from the tribes of Pedro, Kitts Hill, and Hanging Rock. These three tribes have now been combined into one called the Rock Hill Tribe which explains the one column of smoke. The learning of the tribes was divided into four periods. The chief and second chief of the lower class of learning for Pedro, was Chester Kelley and Cecil Wilds, and from Kitts Hill, they were Roberta Brooks and Erma Huddle, and from Hanging Rock they were Paul Davidson and David Wagner. The scribes for the three tribes were Peggy Ferguson from Pedro, Helen Lambert from Kitts Hill, and Gloria Coyer from Hanging Rock. There was quite a bit of rivalry between these tribes as they met in conflict during the first and second periods of learning. The second period began and different leaders were chosen. Hanging Rock's chief and second chief was Paul Davidson and Jim Hoptry, from Pedro there was Cecil Wilds and Bob Kiser, and from Kitts Hill there was Erma Huddle and Peggy Rowe. The scribe for Kitts Hill was Lois Gannon, for Pedro was Dick Pemberton, and Allen McConnell was chosen for Hanging Rock. A new job arose during this period, the wampum had to be cared for. Peggy Ferguson was chosen for this position. Three smoke signals designated the opening of the third period of learning for the three tribes. Chief and second chief were chosen as follows: Dick Pemberton and Cecil Wilds for Pedro, Roberta Brooks and Golden Webb for Kitts Hill, Paul Davidson and Jim Steed for Hanging Rock. The scribes for this period were Peggy Ferguson for Pedro, Freda Gallion for Hanging Rock, and Erma Huddle for Kitts Hill. Margaret Layne was chosen to care for the wampum of the Pedro tribe. During the fourth, and last period, the three tribes were united into one, called the Rock Hill Tribe. Many braves and maidens did not return and many were late in joining thr tribe. Leaders were at last chosen after practically all that were going to attend had arrived. Chief and second chief for our Rock Hill Tribe was Ralph Ackison and Jim Kessinger. The scribe was Bob Reffitt and Catherine Kimble was chosen to care for the wampum. The period continued with the usual difficulties. In the future we are expecting the Rock Hill Tribe to grow and become one of the strongest in the nation. Our Indian guide suddenly came out of the trance he had been in while telling the story. This signal was completed and we continued on our sight-seeing tour. 19 Class Poem Lillian Bentley, her eyes are so dark. With a certain boy she loves to spark. James Wilson, with weight like a brick, Was caught doing stunts on a pogo stick. Lois Sutton, her temper so great, Would make a fine boy a very good mate. Peggy Ferguson, a girl with a smile, A sweet disposition, and plenty of style. Bernice Saunders and Gloria Rowe, When they tell things, they’re really so. I'm sure Cecil Wilds must be quite lovesick Cause he combs his hair till it looks rather slick. Danny Ferguson and his brother Jim Practice their motto Chin Up And Grin. Alberta Burks is a very good friend, Like Helen Mullins will work till the end. Gary Deer and Jimmy Steed. With all their wit are sure to succeed. Lorraine Valentine is as still as a mouse, I wonder if she'll talk when she becomes a spouse. Bobby Brammer is very short. Keeping score is his favorite sport. Ruth Clement gets lots of A's, Who wouldn't like her lovable ways? Alan Dalton, a character to depict, Whose capabilities you cannot restrict. In size Bill Hutchinson is really quite brief. But in his future there's a title called Chief. Lawrence Bailey arrived at ten, He blushed and sighed, Clock stopped again. At one o'clock Roscoe awoke with sorrow, And said to Mom, I'll attend school tomorrow. Of Roy Blagg it has been foretold He will retire with riches whenever he's old. In English class Margaret Layne once wrote. It is high ideals I will try to promote. Fletcher White, who works at the Ro-Na, Seems to talk a lot, but has nothing to say. A thoughtful Senior, is Barbara Layne, Who seems to know most everything. A little Moore girl, her name is Dottie, She's very cute, but Oh! so naughty. Here's Avanelle Stapleton, so quiet and shy, She'll find success with the F. B. I. 20 Golden Webb and Bill Morris came from Kitts Hill, And in Senior Mathematics they are really a pill. In public Bill Burks behaves like a colt, But on a date he's a thunderbolt. Deroy and Francis, when the teachers call, Can always be found parading the hall. Lois Gannon, a friend to all, Will surely be missed in school next fall. Betty Barnett has a head full of curls, And gets along fine with all of the girls. Now Billy Kitts can really peep, Because he drives in a little gray Jeep. Martha Depriest will doubtlessly surpass The other students in History class. Robert Riffitt, a most cheerful young man, Gets a word in edgewise, whenever he can. Now Donna Zimmerman is not at all dumb, She can manage her lessons and date on the run. Monica Adams is quiet and still, Never misses school unless she is ill. Evelyn Harper, a cute little lass, Refuses to let Johnny Ackison pass. Johnny Bare, our great football star. Really gets around, no wonder--a Car! Rosemary Gore rather shy, but nice. Makes Ed Johnson's heart turn over twice. Betty Turvey, who has lots of spunk, Says, Unless it's a joke, to me it's all junk. Barbara Hankins so witty and gay, Doesn't like to get lessons, but sure loves to play. Danny Blair is known for his art, A love for the beautiful, his art doth impart. Catherine Kimble, red hair and blue eyes, Is always laughing, but never sighs. Georgianna Abrams, the smart little lass, Has all of her lessons when she goes to class. Verna Conaway, our football Queen, Is very little but is always seen. Jack Blair, the hombre of the Junior Class Play, Seems to gather new jokes from day to day. Barbara Pinkerman is only thirteen, Can usually be heard, but can never be seen. Ralph Ackison handles everything from string beans to nails Oops! Watch out, there's a hand on the scales. 21 Class Will We, the Senior Class of Rock Hill High School, in the year of our Lord one thousand nine hundred and fifty-one, being of sound mind and body and beinp about to pass from this life in school into the Great Life beyond, do make and ordain this our last will and testament. M. Please come dressed as Redmen. You will receive your Indian name as you enter. The evening of May 30, 1961 arrived and after much hard work and planning everything was ready for the powwow. Chief Rain-In-The-Face (Ralph Ackison) met the alumni at the door with his list of names. Sitting Bull (Jack Blair), an auto salesman, entered first with Hawkeye (Robert Reffitt), his business partner. Fleetfoot (John Bare) and his orchestra entertained with war dances. Included in his orchestra were: White Eagle (Bill Burks); Flying Arrow (Bill Hutchinson); Little Buck (Jim Wilson); Young Hawk (Bill Kitts); Big Bow (Bill Morris); and Little Turtle (Roscoe Delong). Red Feet (Chester Kelley) and Bent Knife (Jim Kessinger), two great warriors, were the next to arrive. As several maidens came toward us, we were pleased to see Brown Fawn (Betty Turvey), Bah Chee (Dorothy Moore), Moonbeam (Margaret Layne), and Po Ko (Monica Adams). They now hold positions as scribes in New York City. Much to our surprise we saw the former Bright Star (Donna Zimmerman) walking in with her papoose. In came the braves: Gray Hawk (Lawrence Bailey), Little Arrow (Francis Pancake), Swift Deer (Deroy Stapleton), Long Bow (Danny Ferguson), Great Eagle (Jim Steed). Chicopee (John Ackison), and Northbrook (Jim Ferguson) with Chief Little Crow (Alan Dalton). Sunbeam (Barbara Hankins) on leave from the Stork Club did a dance with Little Man (Danny Blair) and Tonto (Cecil Wilds) accompanying her on the drums. White Fawn (Lorean Valentine) was stunning in a white, gaily beaded costume - the same costume she wore in Paramount's recent release The Call Of The Wild. Several short plays were given near the end of the evening to review the Indian customs and ideas. Included in the cast were such television stars as: Zoma (Betty Barnett), Hampa (Lillian Bentley), Hiawatha (Ruth Clement), Pink Flower (Verna Conaway), Snow Maiden (Lois Gannon), Kill Chief (Martha Depriest), Tippo (Catherine Kimble), Summersaw (Golden Webb), Red Feather (Fletcher White), Bear Paw (Gary Deere), Winterspring (Bob Brammer), White Cloud (Edward Johnson), and Foxfoot (Roy Blagg). 24 A high light of the evening was the fashion show of Indian maiden's costumes. The professional models were Laughing Water (Peggy Ferguson), Minnehaha (Rosemary Gore), Clear Brook (Barbara Layne), Tamerlane (Helen Mullins), Lucknow (Gloria Rowe), Tonkin (Avanell Stapleton), CheChee (Bernice Saunders), Little Moon (Evelyn Harper), Blue Eyes (Lois Sutton), and Young Maiden (Barbara Pinkerman). Red Bud (Alberta Burks) and I, Young Doe (Georgianna Abrams) were reporters for the occasion, and as we are preparing our copy to go to press, the members of the group are returning to their various occupations to dream of the bygone days at good old Rock Hill Hi. 25 Junior Play MEET MY WIVES When the little wife walks out on you and you suddenly need her in an emergency, what can you do? Get a substitute of course. That is what Alix Ware does when his wife quarrels and leaves him in a jealous rage. He does it to oblige his old college pals, Bill and Hank, who are lodgers in his house, the three having sworn an oath of fealty: One for all and all. Billy is giving a dinner party for his sweetheart, Ann. and her old maid sister Prudence, who has refused to attend the party unless a married woman is present as chaperon. He persuades Hank's fiancee, Cuddles, a chorus girl, to pose as Alix's wife during the dinner party, and he sends for his Uncle Zebediah from, Idaho, whom he hopes to marry off to Prudence, since Ann cannot marry him until the homely Prudence catches a husband. Their record for the season consisted of four wins, three losses and one tie. The Redmen changed their style of play this season from a single wing to a split T formation. They were co-coached by George Brackman and Robert Cales. The Redmen played their best game of the season when they battled the South Point Pointers to a 0 to 0 score in a rain marred contest played on the Pointers new athletic field. The game was a thriller from start to finish, as both teams had the ball twice on their opponent's goal line, but each time they failed to score. Outstanding players for the Redmen this season who won individual honors were: Johnny Bare and Chester Kelly, All-County; Ralph Bud Ackison, All-Southern District; and Bob Reffitt, All-County Conversionist. The Redmen completed the 1950 season with Cecil Wilds and Ralph Ackison, ends; Jack Blair and Chester Kelly, tackles; John Stewart, Bill Burks, and Billy Roth, alternate guards; and Bob Reffitt, center. The backfield consisted of: Danny Blair as quarterback; John Bare as left halfback; Don Huff as right halfback; and Gordon Shope as fullback. Don Huff and Gordon Shope are the only two regular players that will return for the 1951 season. Probably one of their major disadvantages was the lack of height. One of the outstanding games of the season was played when the Redmen downed the South Point Pointers with a score of 49-39. Another thriller was the second game with Chesapeake when the Redmen closely followed the Panthers until the final minutes of play. Senior members of the team were: Cecil Wilds, Roscoe Delong, Bob Reffitt. Danny Blair, Jack Blair, Danny Ferguson and Lawrence Bailey. Cecil Wilds, captain of the team received strong support from Wayne Dalton, a Junior, and Keith Dewitz, a Freshman. 40 41 Home Economics Physical Education 44 Glee Club Instrument Class 45 HOMER WHITE President BOB HAAS Vice-President LORENA CLINE Treasurer ELDRED KELLY News Reporter ALMA MARKINS Secretary Booster's Club A group of Indians consisting of the parents and friends of the famous Redmen gathered around a campfire on October 24, 1950 and organized the Booster’s Club. The primary aim of this organization is to promote the athletic program by supplying new and better facilities. Their first project was the obtaining of lights for the field where the Redmen meet other tribes in games of combat. After completing their first project their plans for general improvement of the field had started to develop and there appears to be no end to their untiring labor and interest. Today the Booster's Club is the most active organization within the tribe and they are looking into the future to learn ways of making the Redmen tribe the strongest and best equipped tribe in the nation. 46 Booster Club Booster's Basketball Team 47 nwtmrr Qj 5£(y R. The main attraction of the day was the football game between Rock Hill and Fairland which resulted with a score of 40-18 in favor of Rock Hill. Rock Hill's Homecoming Queen, Verna Conaway, was crowned during the halftime ceremonies by her attendant, Joyce Markins. The queen and her attendant were escorted by two members of the team, James Kessinger and James Cline, and were presented mums by the cheerleaders of Fairland. At 6:00 P.
