The Voice of Democracy speech contest is held each year to establish patriotism and good citizenship among American youth. Through competitive essays, both written and spoken, several students are selected on various levels of competition. fail' i 'g 14 A ' .W lkt V Z 4 ., lf mf, f V Mn, 'W ' W f Voice of Democracy Winner: Brad Owen Each year a Senior who has shown outstanding concern for DAR Good Citizenship Award: Lisa Dixon. both school and community affairs is chosen for the DAR Good Citizenship Award. The school winner is determined by a vote of the faculty members and is entered into statewide scholarship competition. The state winner is selected on the basis of teacher recommendations, the high-school record, and a written state- ment from the student on her involvement in extracurricular activities.

National Merit Finalist: Kellie Brabham. Any student receiving excellent scores on the Preliminary Scholas- tic Aptitude Test is eligible to be named a National Merit Commend- ed Student. Students attaining superior scores on the PSAT are eligible to become National Merit Finalists. Private corporations and the National Merit Corporation award scholarships to these select- ed students. These scholarships range in value from S250 up to S2,500. The Bausch and Lomb Science Award is given to the Senior student who has attained the highest scholastic standing in science subjects.
