Lesesne tshown rightj, now President Emeritus of Erskine College, was teaching history at Rock Hill High School from 1921 to 1930, he also coached football. During this period he came to the conclusion that the football team A and the teams for the other sports, too - needed' an appropriate, descriptive sobriquet. Accord- ingly, he came up with the name BEAR-CATS. It was his idea to coin a term that would recall the ponderous strength of the bear and the agility of the cat. Doctor Lesesnels suggestion was adopted by the school adminis- tration and thus the athletic teams and the graduates - and even the yearbook - were named for all time to come. We salute Doctor Lesesne as 'SThe Father of the Bear- catsf, When he left Rock Hill, Professor Lesesne went to Greenville to teach history C1930-19401. From 1940 to 1954 he was head of the History Department at Erskine College, and from 1954 to 1966 he served as the eighth president of South Carolina's oldest four-year denomina- tional college. His wife is the former Henrietta Fennell C'Totsyl'D of Rock Hill. The Lesesnes have made their home in Due West since his retirement. A Tradition Continues . . . A career begun by Doctor J. M. Lesesne at Rock Hill High School sixty-two years ago has been expanded into two addition- al careers in liberal arts training through the lives of the Lesesnes' two sons. Dr. Joab M. Lesesne, Jr. tshown lefty, is now the president of Wofford College this father's Alma Materjg and William Wal- lace Fennell Lesesne fshown rightj, fnamed for his distin- guished grandfather of Rock Hilll is the dean of students of Erskine College. Rock Hill High School takes pride in its connec- tion with a proud South Carolina tradition. A HEARTY SALUTE TO MRS. MARY THOMSON SPENCER, THE OLDEST LIVING BEARCAT,' The oldest known, living graduate of Rock Hill public schools is Mary Thomson CMrs. Samuel Reidj Spencer, a resident of Columbia, South Carolina. Mrs. Spencer was born in Abbeville, South Carolina, on October ll, 1886, the daughter of Dr. James William Thomson and Sarah Perrin Thomson. Her father, Doctor Thomson, was the second superintendent of the Rock Hill Graded School Cforerunner of the Rock Hill High Schoolj and later was a venerated professor of Education and Bible at Winthrop College. He was known as Tommy to gen- erations of Winthrop graduates. Thomson Hall on the Winthrop campus is named for him. Mrs. Spencer was the first-honor graduate of the Class of 1902 of the Rock Hill Graded School. She entered Winthrop before her sixteenth birthday, finishing there in 1906. Later, she returned to teach at the Rock Hill Graded School, where she met her future husband, Samuel Reid Spencer, also a faculty member there. They were married in 1915. Two children were ultimately born to this union: Samuel Reid Spencer, Jr., now president of Davidson College, Davidson, North Carolina, and Mrs. Sarah Spencer Gramling. There are now seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Thus we see that three generations of this family have served the cause of education well and long. Rock Hill High School, the lineal descendant of the Rock Hill Graded School, proudly claims its connection with these distinguished friends and educators. We wish Mrs. Spencer well as she approaches her ninety-seventh birthday! There are approximately twenty-five programs included in the courses offered. Seven clubs are sponsored through the different departments and offer the students an opportunity to represent their school in extra-curricular activities. Competitive events for the different service areas have produced winners on the district and state levels. All programs at the Center are open to both male and female students and are designed for eleventh and twelfth grade students. However, if class size allows, tenth grade students may enroll in certain programs. Usually, students will take one course at the Center and two or three courses at their home school. At the end of one year's work, students will receive elective credits fthree Carnegie unitsj for the successful comple- tion of work at the Center. Students in Office Occupation programs who complete the Business English course receive English credit Cone Carnegie unitj. The Child Care, Health Occupations, Business Administration, and Senior Intensi- fied programs are one year in length. The pre-engineering program is one semester in length. Members have to write copy, supervise picture-taking sessions, draw layouts, and proof- read final copy. Staff members spent long hours after school and on Saturdays in the production of the 1983 annual. This year's Bearcat is the forty-ninth volume in the series. The staff of 1983-1984, our present Junior members, will have the honor of publishing the fiftieth volume. Though the Seniors of 1983 will not be present for the Golden Anniversary, they look forward to this significant milestone in the history of RHHS and confidently expect the 1984 staff to produce the best Bearcat in history. FOOTBALL The Bearcat football team in what would be Coach J .M. Wal1ace's last year as head coach ended the season with an overall record of 5-7. The team opened the season with a heartbreaking overtime loss to Myers Park at home, but the next week the ,Cats regrouped and won convincingly over A.C. Flora by a score of 26-8. The next Friday Lancaster came to Rock Hill and handed the 'Cats their second loss of the year. In the first Region game of the year, Rock Hill defeated the Gaffney Indians at home. However, the next three weeks proved to be frustrating with three straight region losses coming at the hands of Spartanburg, Union, and Dorman, all on the road, and the 'Cats' re- cord stood at 2-5. The Bearcats got back in the win column the next two weeks by defeating Lexington on the road and returning to down Boiling Springs in the 'Cats' Homecoming affair. Entering the game with that old nemesis Northwestern, the team held a 4-5 record. Both teams played even in the first half, but the Trojans prevailed in the second half and went on to score a 19-0 win. The regular season record stood at 4-6 with the Big 16 Play-off scheduled for the next week. The 'Cats traveled to Greenwood for the first round of the play-offs and pulled off one of the biggest upsets of the year with a 7-0 win over Greenwood in a rainstorm. Undefeated Irmo was to be the foe in the second round. The 'Cats fought hard but fell to Irmo by a score of 13-0 in Columbia to end the 1982 football season. The entire football team, though small in the size of the players and size of the team itself, progressed each week. With practice be- ginning in August and ending in November, the 1982 Bearcats endured a long season but a rewarding and enjoyable one as well. 170 My J? Bearcats celebrate another touchdown. The 'Cats, guided by Coach Jim Bolt, opened with a thrilling triple-overtime win over Harding High in the Bearcat Den by a score of 72-70. The remaining part of the season saw the 'Cats advance to the finals of the Sertoma Christmas Classic, the largest high-school basketball tournament in the Carolinas, only to fall to Northwestern in the title game. Senior Emmett Browning was placed on the All-Tournament Team and was named Most Valuable player in that tournament. The 'Cats did not fare so well in Region play, compiling a 1-10 record. However, Region II AAAA proved to be a powerhouse of a conference in 1982-83, with the likes of Dorman, Spartanburg, Gaffney, and Northwestern. The ,Cats continued to work hard throughout the season despite their losing streak. All the Seniors on this y :ar's team will be missed and the Juniors and Sophomores can be counted on for a good performance next year. Besides Emmett Browning, who was one of the leading scorers in the state this year, Howard Chisolm, Wendell Dixon, Chalmars Jackson, and Sammie Reid all will be finishing school this year. The splendid climax of the season came on Thursday evening, February 114, 1983, when the Bearcats stunned the Northwestern Tro- jans 55 to 36 in the Winthrop College Coliseum. They received a plaque recognizing them as Twenty-first inithe Nation - a very great honor indeed. This year's squad was limited on pep rallies because RHHS was getting a new gym floor, but these spirited young ladies held several pep rallies outside - one from the back of a truck! The 1982-1983 cheerleaders also won first place in the ECA Regionals in Charlotte and at this printing are going to compete in the Nationals in Williamsburg, Virginia, in the near future. This squad has received many other honors and many compliments, but most outstanding is its ability to show that true Bearcat Spirit! RHHS will long remember the Cheer- leader Squad of 1982-1983. The re- building year for the Lady 'Cats was rewarding and satis- fying to both team and coach. 1 Tina Ireland Coach of Girls' Tennis Team 7 BA EBALL First row, left to right: Tommy Love, Kenny Bailey, Derrick Hope, Goulet Gordon, Gerald Smalls, Paul Hernandez Scott Foulds Frank Cagnina, Robert Beckler. Kenny Skaggs will help out in relief. The 'Cats also return Angelo Douglas, Scott Foulds, Paul Hernandez, Jeff Timmons, Frank Cagnina, and Bryan Bechtler, all of whom saw plenty of action in either the infield or out- field. The memo ies, records, and facts etween these covers will, we hope, in the years to come hold a special place in all our hearts. The Sophomores have spent the year learning what being a Bearcat is all about. The Juniors will be nextb year's leaders at The Rock, and will have special times such as those experienced by the Class of '83. We have be 'N faced challenges and learned how to handle many of lifeis difficult moments. The education we have gained . from our years at Rock Hill High will remain with us no matter what the future holds for us. As we leave Rock Hill High School, we give to you this Bearcat as a record of the events of the school year be- longing to the Class of 1983. We sincerely hope that you will treasure this book as you will treasure your Senior year at Rock Hill High. As we become a part of Rock Hill High's past, we ask that you remember the words of someone who really understood. It is not what is in front of you that blocks your path. It is what is inside you that holds you back. And now, with much gratitude for all the help, time, and effort which aided in the production of this book, we wish to express our love and special thanks to the following people: -Eric G. Lessmeister, Robert H. Parker, and the faculty and staff of Rock Hill High School, for their support, co-operation, and patience in working with the staff, -The Evening Herald, for several good photographs, -Miss Irene Kneece, for all the pictures and copy for the CDC section, -D. Sam Cook, Worth Strecker, and Mike Carroll, for many of our best photographs, -Mr. and Mrs. Horace Blackston and Bill Blackston, for their excellent photography, good advice, and sense of humor in difficult moments, . -Pat Boone, for selecting the Senior Beauties of 1983, and -William B. White, Jr., without whom this edition of the Bearcat would not have been completed, for his guidance, words of advice, friendship, and unfailing support.
