School Announcers, Ueft rightj: Jim Calkins, Tammy Jo Haire, Mike All- man. South Carolina Energy Conference representatives were chosen by the principal and attended an assembly held at Winthrop College in the fall. This conference was begun to enhance awareness of this country's energy con- sumption problems and alternate possibilities for the currently high prices of energy sources. Voice of Democracy Winner: Tammy Jo Haire. 146 Starting this year, the job of school announcer was divided among three persons dedicated to ser- vice to the School and to the idea that better oppor- tunities for students can arise from daily informa- tive bulletins. The three announcers were chosen at the end of the last academic year through auditions voted on by the faculty. South Carolina Energy Conference Representatives: Jett Jerome Stacey Robinson. The Voice of Democracy speech contest is designed to promote patriotism and good citizenship among Ameri- can youth. This goal is achieved each year through com- petitive orations, which are both written and performed by aspiring students. Awards are given on various levels of competition, including local, district, regional, and na- tional levels.

,. , ,-N Governor's Scholars, fleft to rightj: Jimmy Ray, Margaret Carrington, Bryan Rawls. Optimist Youth are chosen by a faculty vote on the basis of their all-round accomplishments throughout high school. The boy and girl selected to represent Rock Hill High participate in a local radio program and are honored at an annual banquet sponsored by the Optimist Club of Rock Hill. The purpose of the honor is to stimulate appre- ciation of promising students from throughout the nation. Governor 's Scholars are chosen to participate in a five-week honors program of summer enrichment at the College of Charleston. In addi- tion to the academic facet of the pro- gram, each scholar is given an excel- lent preview of college life through the constant social interaction and the dormitory experience. Also, the setting of downtown Charleston pro- vides easy access to the historical city and its additional educational opportunities. W -Qt ' in 5 5 'll ' 2 3 ff l . The most venerable honor a choral student can have is to be chosen as a member of the All- State Honors Chorus. The members of this assem- blage have been fortunate enough to achieve the best of scores in the au- tumn auditions. Their an- nual concert has contin- ually proved an example worthy of emulation by all who revere high stan- dards of voice produc- tion. All State Honors Chorus, Row 1: Tanya Ludlam, Tanzella Barber, Rhonda Hyatt, Lisa Dal Pogetto, Sharon Kenningtong Row 2: Chris Faulkenberry, Ronnie Bailey, Mike Allman, Jim Calkins. Members of the All-State Re- gional Chorus are selected through competitive auditions held during the fall. These stu- dents spend an All-State week- end in the spring preparing for an afternoon concert, which annual- ly proves to be impressive and en- joyable for all to hear. 15.1.
