All-State Members, Row 1: Chris Stephenson, Jimmy Ray, Row 2: Margaret Carrington, Lori F ree- man, Kathi Shear, Donna Helms, Row 3: Worth Strecker, Bryan Rawls, Lindsay Mohle, Wendy Coleman, Row 4: Janine Gay. v These students were cho- sen by faculty members to appear on the television pro- gram Showcase. The pro- gram, produced by WNSC Channel 30, highlighted the schools in the area. Our re- presentatives served to in- form the public on. up- coming events and also par- ticipated in a panel discussion on the problems confronting the school dis- trict. Each year, interested band students begin the arduous process of preparing for All- State auditions. Long hours of practice and a certain amount of natural talent are essential to the success of the auditions, which are held in Columbia. Those who are chosen to par- ticipate in the All-State Band and the All-State Clinic Band spend a long weekend at Fur- man University in Greenville preparing for the annual con- cert, which attracts profes- sional musicians from through- out the region. S n I ., -,W The Academe Team, made up this year of six outstand- ing students, strives to quicken its recall of academic facts through constant in- vestigation and drill. The group competes primarily on the Winthrop Challenge, a locally sponsored quiz pro- gram, with students from high schools from throughout the state. This year, the team has done par- ticularly well, spurred on by the great enthusiasm of the team members. ..'.f-aw' ...Www fi? Each year, Model UN Del- egates from throughout the state assemble at Winthrop College to participate in a mock United Nations ses- sion. Aside from the regular floor sessions, the delegates also attend various commit- tee meetings to voice the needs and opinions of the nations they represent. Rock Hill High's team pre- pares for the Model UN by staying abreast of issues im- portant to the country given to them, which is Czechoslo- vakia this year. ,. , ,-N Governor's Scholars, fleft to rightj: Jimmy Ray, Margaret Carrington, Bryan Rawls. Optimist Youth are chosen by a faculty vote on the basis of their all-round accomplishments throughout high school. The boy and girl selected to represent Rock Hill High participate in a local radio program and are honored at an annual banquet sponsored by the Optimist Club of Rock Hill. The purpose of the honor is to stimulate appre- ciation of promising students from throughout the nation. Governor 's Scholars are chosen to participate in a five-week honors program of summer enrichment at the College of Charleston. In addi- tion to the academic facet of the pro- gram, each scholar is given an excel- lent preview of college life through the constant social interaction and the dormitory experience.
