The William Randolph Hearst Foundation, in coo- peration with the United States Senate, sponsors the Senate Youth Program for high-school students in- volved in student government. The competition begins with government examinations on the local level, and the two state finalists receive a 52,000 scholarship and an all-expense paid trip to Washington, D.C. Dur- ing their week in the nation's capitol, the Senate Youth Delegates meet with the President, the Vice-Presi- dent, Senators, and Representatives. William Randolph Hearst Scholarship Competition School Winner: Lisa Carter. National Merit Semifinalists are chosen on the basis of superior scores on the Preliminary Scho- lastic Aptitude Test taken in their Junior year. If they are named Finalists late in their Senior year, they are then eligible for a number of scholar- ships awarded by private corporations and by T the National Merit Corporation. These scholar- ships range in value from S250 to an annuity of 82,500 National Merit Semifinalist: Bryan Rawls. tgp-no'-ff The Rensselaer Science and Math Award is bes- towed upon the rising Senior who has attained the highest academic standing in math and science. The award, a handsome bronze medal, is given to en- courage superior students to consider attending the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, New York. ini. ' Century III Leader: Bryan Rawls. Erskine Scholars participate in the E. B. Ken- nedy Scholarship Finals at Erskine College in Due West, South Carolina. They spend several days on campus touring the grounds and being interviewed by members of the administration. The purpose of the competition is to persuade students from around the state to explore the opportunities at Erskine. DAR Good Citizenship Award: Bryan Rawls. The Century III Leadership Competition is designed to promote admirable standards of scholarship, ser- vice, leadership, and awareness of current events. Century III Leaders at each school are chosen on the basis of a current events examination and a personal application. State winners receive a 31,500 scholar- ship and an all-expense paid trip to Williamsburg, Vir- ginia. 'VJ 1 Q S H,-4 Erskine Scholars: Robbie Boone, Nancy Stewart. The DAR Good Citizenship Award is given to a Senior who has displayed outstanding concern for school and community affairs. The school winner, chosen by a vote of the faculty members, is entered in a state scholarship competition. The state winner is chosen on the basis of teacher recommendations, the high school record, and a written statement of involvement in extracurricular ac- tivities. 141
