JOHNNY CARROLL 4' 1 FRANK ADAMS BILL DAWSON VON SETTLEMYER EDDIE CAGLE GARY KISER I EASLEY 7, ROCK HILL 0 Easley's Green Waves upset Rock Hill's Bearcats 7-O in a thrilling defensive game at Municipal Stadium. Easley delivered its scoring punch in the first quarter after taking the initial kickoff. After gaining 19 yards on an end run and two penalties totaling 20 yards, the Bearcats were in trouble on their own 32. Easley passed to the 5-yard line on the next play. Two plays later Grantham squeezed through the center slot into the end zone. Bill Nies was outstanding for Rock Hill with a total of 77 yards ground gaining. GREENWOOD 18, ROCK HILL 6 Greenwood's touted Whiz Kids kicked up the turf and left the Rock Hill Bearcats 18-6 in Greenwood. Rock Hill, after yield- ing to two Greenwood drives in the first half, returned to the field and controlled the ball for 39 downs while Greenwood got off only 18 plays. ln the fourth quar- ter Wheeles, with passes to ends Jerry Rodgers and Glenn Lumpkin, got the ball into scoring territory. Wheeles scored the lone Rock Hill touchdown on a one- yard plunge. GAFFNEY 18, ROCK HILL 12 Gaffney pulled out in front of Rock Hill in the last 25 seconds to win a thrill- ing football game. The Indians' winning touchdown came on the next-to-last play of the game. Running out of a spread for- mation QB Roger Harris threw a perfect pass to Bobby Harris in the end zone. Rock Hill led twice during the game, but failed to keep it. Glenn Lumpkin scored RH's 1st touchdown on a pass from QB Wheeles, Von Settlemyre danced 74 yards in the third quarter for RH's final tally.

ROCK HILL I4, SPARTANBURG 7 Rock Hill High's second victory of the season came when they defeated a mighty Crimson Tide from Spartanburg on the slippery surface of Rock HiII's Municipal Stadium. Rock Hill posted a I4-O lead on touchdowns by Glenn Lump- kin and Johnny Carroll, but still had to put down drives by a determined Spar- tanburg team before tacking up the win. Spartanburg scored and made it I4-7, with about four minutes remaining. They then recovered a Rock Hill fumble with about two minutes to go. Carroll inter- cepted a pass to end the threat. LANCASTER 20, ROCK HILL 7 Lancaster's team romped over the Rock Hill Bearcats 20-7 in Lancaster. Lancas- ter's first tally came on an eight-yard run by Goldsmith. Rock Hill came back to tie the game on a nine yard run by Bill Nies. Paul Wheeles split the uprights for the extra point. Just before the end of the first half, Lancaster recovered a fumble and scored again. The try for the extra point was good, and they led I4-7. Lan- caster put on the final touchdown drive in the third quarter and scored a 20-7 victory. BROOKLAND-CAYCE 20, ROCK HILL O Rock Hill Bearcats were overwhelmed by the expert blocking and fine defensive play of Brookland-Cayce and lost their homecoming game 20-O. Brookland- Cayce's first score came in the first quar- ter on a quarterback sneak. Thetry for the extra point was missed and Brook- land-Cayce led 6-O. Twice Rock Hill sub- stained drives to Brookland-Cayce's 30- yard line, but the Cayce team held. Cayce's Roland scored on a 56-yard dash. ROCK HILL 7, PARKER 6 The Rock Hill Bearcats smashed across a touchdown in the final quarter to beat Parker 7-6. Throughout the first half Rock Hill was forced to punt when they got the ball. With seconds left in the first half, Parker picked up a fumble and romped into the end zone for a six point lead. Rock Hill's tally came in the fourth quar- ter on a quarterback sneak by Paul Wheeles. A long weaving run by half- back Charlie Ackerman had placed the Bearcats in scoring position. Wheeles split the uprights, and the final score was Rock Hill 7, Parker 6. CHESTER 20, ROCK HILL I3 Chester's Red Cyclones crammed a 20-I3 victory over Rock Hill in a thrill- packed game at Municipal Stadium. Ches- ter got all of its scores in an exciting sec- ond quarter. Clyde Wrenn sneaked over for Chester's first score. Rock Hill, three plays later, scored with a pass from Paul Wheeles to end Jerry Rodgers. Halfback Gambull put Chester ahead again as he ran six yards around the end for Chester's second tally. Chester's final score came on the next-to-last play of the half as quarterback Wrenn hit Alexander with a IO-yard pass. Bearcat fullback Bill Nies scored Rock Hill's other touchdown and the final score was Chester 20, Rock Hill I3. DREHER 7, ROCK HILL 0 Rock Hill's Bearcats threw a scare into undefeated Dreher but lost 7-O in the season's final game at Municipal Stadium. Dreher's lone touchdown came early in the second quarter by fullback Scotty Rogers on a one-yard plunge. The try for the extra point was good. Coach Tommy Oates said this was the best team effort the Bearcats had displayed in two years. Late in the fourth quarter, led by the brilliant running of fullback Bill Nies, the Bearcats staged a drive to Dreher's 6-yard line, but failed to score as they ran out of downs.
