They have tried fo help us to be better school citizens and live up to the ideals of true Americans. V armed WHEN WE WERE FRESHMEN President, Douglas Cramer, Vice-President, Carol Hudgins, Secretary, Mary Lou Connatser, Treasurer, Willie Stephenson. September 7, 1955 is a day that will not soon be forgotten by us, the class of 1959. That day launched four years that will always be remembered by the 424 bewildered students who haltingly made their way through the doors of Rock Hill High School. As schedule cards were handed out, we began to realize how confusing this high school life could be. Understanding homeroom teachers tried to help with diagrams of hallways and helpful hints such as, turn left at the end of the covered way -as if we knew what the covered way was. We were really con- fused. The bell rang and we were out on our own. We probably would never have gotten to the right classes if not for the help of the upper-classmen. Their knowledge seemed to us limitless, that is, until we found out that what they thought to be the swimming pool on our cards was actually study period and the elevators were not where they said they would be. Things moved fast, and before long we began to feel at home and take part in the activities of the school. We elected representatives to the student council. We had our class meeting and elected Doug- las Cramer, President, Carole Hudgins, Vice-Presi- dent, Mary Lou Connarser, Secretary, and Willie Stephenson, Treasurer. We entertained the Sophs at the annual Frosh-Soph Frolic. Our band was chosen for the great honor of playing in the Orange Bowl at Miami. Many of our fellow-Freshmen were among those to take this wonderful trip. Fellow-Freshmen were also taking their places in sports beside the upper-classmen, and we began to feel a real spirit of unity with this place which had caused so much Page Thirty CLASS apprehension just a few short months ago. Summer passed, and we actually looked for- ward to returning. This time, as Sophomores, we looked on smugly as the incoming Freshmen went through the same trials and difficulties that we had gone through. We were now very much at home with the activities of the school. There were more clubs to ioin and more extrafcurricular activities in which to take part. With these added benefits came added work, since we had to buckle down and study harder because subiects became increasingly difficult. When our elections were held, Helen Howard was chosen as our President, Tommy Vaughn as Treasurer and Betty Lou Buffkin as Secretary. As Sophomores, sports began to interest us more. Our football team did not have its best year, but we were proud of the way the boys tried, and never lost spirit. The Bearcats had a good basketball rec- ord, winning the Lewisville Holiday Tournament Championship. Our baseball team was the State Champion, losing only one game the entire season. During our Sophomore year, the Juniors were not able to present a play, but we looked forward to a chance the next year to show off our theatrical abilities. The talk of Junior-Senior made waiting more unbearable. The end of the year finally came, and as the Seniors filed down the aisle to receive di- plomas, we realized that we were half-way to the goal for which we were striving. Returning for our Junior year, strange shapes returned with us-the controversial chemise. It is hard WHEN WE WERE SOPHOMORES President, Helene Howard, Secretary, Betty Lou Buffkin, Treasurer, Tommy Vaughan. HISTORY to describe the feelings one gets as he reaches his Junior year. He has plenty of high school experience behind him, but that Senior year ahead seems a long way off. However, the year is surprisingly full. We begin thinking about grades that must be main- tained for college acceptance, entrance requirements, and entrance exams. We chose Willie Stephenson to head our staff of officers, with Joyce Jackson, Vice-President and Pat Brewton, Secretary. We were proud to take a bigger part in school activities as our class presented its play, Willie's Secret Weapon? to a large aud- ience. Junior Marshals were selected to usher at the Senior play and graduation. The year passed quickly and we began ordering our class rings. These rings, small in size, but big in spirit, strengthened our ties of loyalty. Soon we were planning Junior-Senior, and our committees worked hard to make the theme, Around the World , a great success. lt was a night we will long re- member. We looked forward with envy to next year as the Seniors related their experiences of their Senior trip. Watching many of our friends graduate, we realized that we would be the next to graduate! At last the year was here! We felt very important as the leaders of the school. Of course, this meant greater responsibilities, but as Seniors we were ready to tackle anything. Mr. Oates came as our new football coach this WHEN WE WERE JUNIORS President, Willie Stephenson, Vice-President, Joyce Jackson, Secretary, Pat Brewton. -N WHEN WE WERE SENIORS President Ronnie Plexuco Vice President Michael Munn Secretary Jean Plexico Treasurer Judy Adams year, and after a slow start our boys came roaring back to win all but one of our last four games, a close one to highly touted Dreher High School. Our bas ketball team, coached by Mr. Yarborough, was one of the top contenders in the state, with a 9-3 record as the Bearcat went to press. The greatest thrill came when our team defeated formerly unbeaten, untied Dreher High, regarded as the top team in the state breaking their fourteen-game winning streak Willie Stephenson was chosen president of the entire student body. We elected Ronnie Plexico, Sen ior class President- Michael Munn Vice-President Judy Adams, Treasurer and Jean Plexico, Secretary We presented our Senior play Momma s Angel Child. Ordering name cards and graduation an nouncements, and planning for the Senior trip height ened our feeling of prestige. The Senior trip was an experience that will live always in our memories. The Juniors treated us to a fine time at Junior-Senior, and before we could catch a breath, graduation was upon us. Standing with our diplomas amid over 200 fel- low-graduates, we realize we have reached this goal only through hard work and with the help of devoted teachers and advisers. Whatever benefits we reap from this piece of parchment will be dic- tated by the amount of work we have put into ob- taining it. On whatever courses our diverging inter- ests lead us, the roots of our loyalty will always lie deep in the traditions of Rock Hill High School. Jack Jennings, Historian Page ThirtysOne K' 1 8 .' .. The clubs hold contests of various kinds on individual, state, and even on national levels. Each member is encouraged to undertake a project of his own which is a valuable experience. ln York County there are 900 4-H Club members. Our club is new at Rock Hill High School this year. 4-if wa? The Bearcat offense could not get going until it was too late, but the defense was satisfactory with Nies, Lumpkin, Cranford, Wolfe, and Carter doing commendable iobs. GAFFNEY 6, ROCK HILL 0 A fourth period fumble on the Bearcat 25 yard line gave Gaffney its lone touchdown in a hard fought contest in Rock Hill. Bill Bradley, Gaffney back, picked up a Bearcat bobble on the 25 and went the rest of the way for the TD. STEWART SETTLEMYRE L fr : B RODGERS S, I g onirnn-I CAMDEN 6, ROCK HILL 0 Rock Hill failed to capitalize on four Camden fumbles and an intercepted pass and lost 6-0 as Camden came in the sec- ond half. Rock Hill came close, but could not score as the half ended. In the fourth period Camden marched 86 yards to a TD. Glen Lumpkin played an outstanding game for Rock Hill. ANDERSON 20, ROCK HILL 7 A stubborn Rock Hill football team put up a tremendous fight before losing to a powerful Anderson team. Rock Hill scored for the first time all season as halfback Jimmy Jacobs intercepted an Anderson pass and raced 43 yards to a touch- down. The Bearcat offense was much improved, paced by the passing of quarterbacks Paul Wheeles and Willie Stephenson and the running of Wendell Stewart. Bill Nies, Glen Lumpkin, Von Settlemyre, Jimmy Jacobs, and Donnie McGinnis also were outstanding on offense. The rugged Bearcat defense was paced by Ken Humphries, Moose Cranford, Bill Cran- ford, Bill Starnes, and Herschel Carter, along with the rest of the line. Dreher with l0 lettermen defeated the Bearcats 63-29. The Bear- cats feeling the need for a victory, got revenge from Myers Park by defeating the Mustangs 44-43. The Bearcats playing with 3 seniors, 4 juniors, and 3 sophomores got the desire to win and captured 4 more victories after defeating Myers Park. Next the Bearcats ran into a fast, good shooting Parker team who walloped them by a 75-39 score. This loss brought the Rock Hill team to a 5-3 record. The Bear- cats meta weak Camden team and jumped back into the winning column. Then a rival game with Lancaster saw Rock Hill score its high mark of the year with 82 and win number 6. The toughest part of the schedule was now to come-the long awaited game with Spartanburg. The Bearcats had beaten Spartanburg only once in 8 years and at no time within the last four years. The Bearcats would not forget the licking they took last year and were determined to win. The Bearcats out- shot and outhustled the Red Birds and won by a 58-53 margin. This was a moral victory for the Bear- cats. This was a shot in the arm. The Bearcats after defeating Spartanburg, had only two days to rest before meeting undefeated Dreher. The tension was great before the game and the Bearcats were pawing for the Blue Devils. The game saw Dreher behind after five minutes, but they got hot and the score was tied at the end of the quarter. The Blue Devils kept hitting and they were ahead 32-30 at half. After intermission the Bearcats went on a rampage and were 5 points ahead at the end of the third quar- ter. Tommy Crump, Willie Stephenson, Tommy Vaughn, and George Lyons sparked an attack that was never overtaken. The out-rebounding of Don Dobbins was a key factor in the win. The Bearcats lost a mainstay in Wendell Stewart, however, Don Dobbins played like a veteran to add to the Bear- cats' needed strength on the backboard.
