Even after Harding beat them 2l-O in the season's opener, they just worked harder and aimed for the win column. Before the year was over they had put tive notches in that column and numbered among their contests Gaffney, Brookland-Cayce, Lancaster, Florence, and Georgetown. They tied or powerful Columbia team rated as one of the best elevens in the state. The other loss was to Sumter, losers only once during the year. lndividually it was also a good year. Bobby Tinkler, captain and end, and Bill MCGill, alternate captain and guard, were named to the South Carolina squad for the Shrine Bowl game in Charlotte. Tackle lohnny Brunson also won honors and was selected as a member of the Up-State tearn which played in the Horse Bowl game at Camden. There you have a brief picture ot the Bearcats of '49 who stayed in the fight all the way. The High School and the folks of Bock Hill are justly proud of them.

When the final whistle blew Thanksgiving Day the scoreboard showed that the Bear- cats had won five games, lost two, and tied one. For the fifth straight season, then, the Bearcats marched to a successful season. High praise for that success goes to Head Coach Walter Ienkins, assistant coaches, Calvin ww ,,. , -- L My ,vi at W A . lt r 1 'F A V 44 W W I CATS McCaw and Gene Avery, and a squad of players who didn't know the meaning of the word quit. lt took plenty of hard work. Any coach will tell you that there is no substitute for the long, tiring hours on the practice field. But the Bearcats and their coaches were willing to pay the price. Even now the players can prob- ably hear lenkins yelling over and over, run it again, run that play again, and McCaW shouting block hard drive, drive, drive. at .
