H111 grow from a small town to a c1ty We have llved through a world war we have watched the growth of a huge C lanese plant 1n our mrdst we were the f1rst users of the d1a1 system ln Rock H111 we have l1ved and are l1v1ng ID the AlOm1C Age But these facts although 1mportant to us and our elders w1ll not be our most cher1shed memor1es Lets go for Just a few m1nutes 1nto the past to 11ve aga1n those prec1ous days wh1ch have been ours and wh1ch w1ll no doubt re turn aga1n and agam 1n memor1es to brmg a smlle or perhaps a Slqh The year IS 1938 A wonderful and prcgress1ve year We hear our elders talk of a new materlal called nylon wh1ch has Just been 1nvented and occas1onal1y there IS mentlon of a man called 1-l1tler who has Just marched 1nto Austrla but our young m1nds and hands are too busy w1th f1rst grade work to real1ze the s1gn1f1canCe of th1s ln read1n wr1t1n and r1thmet1c we f1nd a new and Wonderful world open to us The year IS 1939 Even at the tender age of seven we are fasc1nated by boog1e WOOQ19 wh1ch has Just been born For the flrst t1me we hear SIHQIIIQ' commerclals over our rad1os and l1sten eagerly to a new type of rad1o pro gram called QUIZ Program All the talk of a war When You Wlsh Upon A Star As we s1nk deeper 1nto our school work the news of a war 1n Europe IS more real to us but st1l1 we QIVG l1ttle thought to 1-l1tler s marchlng forces and are content to struggle w1th mult1pl1cat1on tables The year 1S 1941 ln geography we are study1ng about a l1ttle far away country called Iapan but on December 7 when Pearl Harbor 1S attacked our l1ves are greatly changed by the l1ttle men across the sea Our songs are changed from the l1ght and fantast1c to patr1ot1c melod1es such as God Bless Amerlca and we work energet1cally 1n the scrap and paper dr1ves And so we complete our fourth step up the ladder of 1earn1ng The year 1S 1942 Entermg f1fth grade work we feel very grown up when we get our f1fS1 taste of h1story and even have exams We add to our the halls of Rock H111 Hlgh and we feel very 1mportant and grown up only to dlscover that we are not allowed to share h1gh school adventures Roosevelt the only pres1dent we have ever known IS elected called the Atom Bomb wh1ch seems unreal and 1mposs1ble to us And we hear w1th sadness of the death of Pres1dent Roosevelt We are overJoyed by the news that Germany has sur rendered uncond1t1ona1ly w1th the surrender of lapan soon fo1low1ng And so w1th these surrenders the clouds of war no longer overshadow our l1ves and we enter the nlnth grade 1n peace and w1th a fee11ng of content ment The we plan and attend the 1un1orSen1or The year 1S 1949 And we are SGHIOIS at last' We have a large class even though many have dropped along the waysrde Our class proves that we know how to co operate and work together by hav1ng a Semor Car n1val wh1ch 1S enJoyed by young and old al1ke The ma Jor1ty of the class go to Charlotte to see the mov1e Ham let and then show the1r talent by puttlng on a
