BOBBY TINKLER ANNE RANDALL Historian 18 CLASS I-IISTGRY Numer1cal1y our class the class of 1950 goes down 1n h1story as one of the largest ever to graduate from Rock H111 H1gh School We have gone through twelve years of school watchmg Rock H111 grow from a small town to a c1ty We have llved through a world war we have watched the growth of a huge C lanese plant 1n our mrdst we were the f1rst users of the d1a1 system ln Rock H111 we have l1ved and are l1v1ng ID the AlOm1C Age But these facts although 1mportant to us and our elders w1ll not be our most cher1shed memor1es Lets go for Just a few m1nutes 1nto the past to 11ve aga1n those prec1ous days wh1ch have been ours and wh1ch w1ll no doubt re turn aga1n and agam 1n memor1es to brmg a smlle or perhaps a Slqh The year IS 1938 A wonderful and prcgress1ve year We hear our elders talk of a new materlal called nylon wh1ch has Just been 1nvented and occas1onal1y there IS mentlon of a man called 1-l1tler who has Just marched 1nto Austrla but our young m1nds and hands are too busy w1th f1rst grade work to real1ze the s1gn1f1canCe of th1s ln read1n wr1t1n and r1thmet1c we f1nd a new and Wonderful world open to us The year IS 1939 Even at the tender age of seven we are fasc1nated by boog1e WOOQ19 wh1ch has Just been born For the flrst t1me we hear SIHQIIIQ' commerclals over our rad1os and l1sten eagerly to a new type of rad1o pro gram called QUIZ Program All the talk of a war be tween France and Germany and an alllance between Germany and Italy IS crowded out of our mlnd and re The year IS 1940 We enter th1rd grade work w1th eag erness and expectatlon Our favor1te song IS When You Wlsh Upon A Star As we s1nk deeper 1nto our school work the news of a war 1n Europe IS more real to us but st1l1 we QIVG l1ttle thought to 1-l1tler s marchlng forces and are content to struggle w1th mult1pl1cat1on tables The year 1S 1941 ln geography we are study1ng about a l1ttle far away country called Iapan but on December 7 when Pearl Harbor 1S attacked our l1ves are greatly changed by the l1ttle men across the sea Our songs are changed from the l1ght and fantast1c to patr1ot1c melod1es such as God Bless Amerlca and we work energet1cally 1n the scrap and paper dr1ves And so we complete our fourth step up the ladder of 1earn1ng The year 1S 1942 Entermg f1fth grade work we feel very grown up when we get our f1fS1 taste of h1story and even have exams We add to our vocabulary such words and GXDISSSIOUS as blackouts G1 and K P COHd1l1OHS 1n the Pac1f1c look dark when we hear that MacArthur has surrendered the Ph1l1pp1nes And we are fasc1nated by a new creat1on known as the Zoot Su1t The year 1S 1943 Thlngs beg1n to look brlghter when we learn that Italy has surrendered and we hear the slogan One down two to go ln the slxth grade we learn that we Wlll be the second class to graduate from the twelfth grade and we real1ze that we are only half way up our ladder of learnrng The year 1S 1944 As members of the seventh grade we are enter1ng for the 11IS1 t1me the halls of Rock H111 Hlgh and we feel very 1mportant and grown up only to dlscover that we are not allowed to share h1gh school adventures Roosevelt the only pres1dent we have ever known IS elected for h1s fourth term of O1f1C9 and we study about DDay 1n our h1story class Our favor1te songs are Meet Me ln Samt LOUIS and Swmgmg On A Star The year IS 1945 We had urt11 th1s year looked for ward to bemg IH the e1ghth grade and memb rs of h1gh school but we soon real1ze that even the t1tle of Freshmen 1S taken from us and we are st1ll cons1dered members of grammar school We hear of a weapon called the Atom Bomb wh1ch seems unreal and 1mposs1ble to us And we hear w1th sadness of the death of Pres1dent Roosevelt We are overJoyed by the news that Germany has sur rendered uncond1t1ona1ly w1th the surrender of lapan soon fo1low1ng And so w1th these surrenders the clouds of war no longer overshadow our l1ves and we enter the nlnth grade 1n peace and w1th a fee11ng of content ment The year 1S 1946 At last we are allowed to call our selves Freshmen and to part1 Jpate Jn h1gh school act1v1 tres There IS talk of a new 1nvent1on called Telev1s1on and our favor1te song 1S On the Atch1son Topeka and the Santa Fe The g1rls please grandma by 1ower1ng the1r sk1rt lengths almost to the floor but at the same t1me they ra1se the eyebrows of the1r elders by USIHQ perox1de 1nstead of ha1r ton1c The year 1S 1947 And we are enter1ng our sophomore year Very fem1n1ne appear the g1rls 1n baller1na skrrts and the boys beg1n to go 1n for pastel colors and peroxld ed ha1r A song IS popular only 1f 1t makes l1ttle sense our favor1te IS Open the Door R1chard Strugghng w1th algebra and subord1nate clauses we travel qu1ckly to the eleventh grade The year 1S 1948 And we go bebop Our songs such as Flat Foot Floogte make l1ttle sense and the boys dont feel well dressed unless they are wear1ng Drapes wh1le the g1rls are wear1ng stra1ght sklrts and fantast1c shoes Smce we are Iumors we plan and attend the 1un1orSen1or The year 1S 1949 And we are SGHIOIS at last' We have a large class even though many have dropped along the waysrde Our class proves that we know how to co operate and work together by hav1ng a Semor Car n1val wh1ch 1S enJoyed by young and old al1ke The ma Jor1ty of the class go to Charlotte to see the mov1e Ham let and then show the1r talent by puttlng on a play en trtled Lrsten to Leon Our songs are 11V9l1Gf than ever and the t1tles are crazler than ever for example Mule Tra1n and Rudolph the Red Nosed Re1ndeer Then there IS our flnal Iumor Semor the baccalaureate sermon and at last COMMENCEMENT Commencement the beg1nn1ng' The beg1nn1ng f new and wonderful l1ves But no matter where we are or what we are dolng our roots Wlll forever be 1mbedded 1n Rock H111 H1gh School And so we go from these halls sad for we feel that we are leavmg beh1nd us someth1ng wonderful wh1ch IS very much a part of us but The graduates are go1ng forth God bless them everyone' To run th1s hard and stubborn world lust as 1t should be run Unknown I I I I ' , - . . When the final whistle blew Thanksgiving Day the scoreboard showed that the Bear- cats had won five games, lost two, and tied one. For the fifth straight season, then, the Bearcats marched to a successful season. High praise for that success goes to Head Coach Walter Ienkins, assistant coaches, Calvin ww ,,. , -- L My ,vi at W A . lt r 1 'F A V 44 W W I CATS McCaw and Gene Avery, and a squad of players who didn't know the meaning of the word quit. lt took plenty of hard work. Any coach will tell you that there is no substitute for the long, tiring hours on the practice field. But the Bearcats and their coaches were willing to pay the price. Even now the players can prob- ably hear lenkins yelling over and over, run it again, run that play again, and McCaW shouting block hard drive, drive, drive. at . ,g . if WW' Ma-D. . , .. Even after Harding beat them 2l-O in the season's opener, they just worked harder and aimed for the win column. Before the year was over they had put tive notches in that column and numbered among their contests Gaffney, Brookland-Cayce, Lancaster, Florence, and Georgetown. They tied or powerful Columbia team rated as one of the best elevens in the state. The other loss was to Sumter, losers only once during the year. lndividually it was also a good year. Bobby Tinkler, captain and end, and Bill MCGill, alternate captain and guard, were named to the South Carolina squad for the Shrine Bowl game in Charlotte. Tackle lohnny Brunson also won honors and was selected as a member of the Up-State tearn which played in the Horse Bowl game at Camden. There you have a brief picture ot the Bearcats of '49 who stayed in the fight all the way. The High School and the folks of Bock Hill are justly proud of them. Ted Bobinson and Gary Stephens also turned in fine backfield jobs. ROCK HILL 39 LANCASTER 0 The Bearcats played probably their best game of the season against the Purple Hurri- canes at Lancaster. The Hurricanes made the mistake of letting the word get around that this was the year they were going to take the Bear- cats. They had a good team and they wanted to win. The Rock Hillians, however, soon ruined their hopes. With Buck George running brilliantly the Bearcats posted a 30 to 0 victory in their scrap- book. George collected three touchdowns, one an electrifying 82-yard punt return on the last play of the first half. Saverance got two touch- downs, including a 75-yard run from scrimmage, and the final tally came on a 26-yard pass from Ted Robinson to Larry Connor. The entire Bock Hill line was terrific. Lan- caster made only one first down. ROCK HILL 7 SUMTER 27 Sumter was at this stage of the season prob- ably the best team in the state. The Bearcats were primed for an upset, and when the Friday night game time arrived the 'Cats were ready and rarin'. At game time, however, torrents of rain swept over the Bock Hill Stadium and the game was postponed until Saturday night. Then it was delayed until Monday night. The Gamecocks finally proved to the 4,300 fans at the Stadium that they were a good club. MCGILI. NEAL WILLIAMS Guard Back Tackle 1 was GRICE HERLONG CRAIG Back End Guard Russell Sutton was sensational as he accounted for three Sumter touchdowns, an extra point, and set up the other TD. The only Rock Hill score came on a neat pass play from Karl Grice to Wingback Larry Connor, which covered 45 yards. Connor was flying when he took the aerial and he outran everybody in sight. Grice kicked the point. Bobby Falls was outstanding for the Bearcats as was Buck George, Billy McGill, Iimmy Gallman, Swain Wright, Bobby Rudder and Iimmy Phillips. ROCK HILL 19 FLORENCE 0 Two quick scores in the first quarter put the Bearcats off to a good start against the Yellow Iackets from Flor- ence and a tally in the final quarter gave them an im- pressive l9 to U win at the Stadium. The win was a costly one because Buck George, sensational back, received a back injury in the first period and was carried from the field. The injury caused him to miss the following weeks game with Columbia. George got the first score on a nifty 20-yard run. He started around his own left end, faked a wouldebe tackler neatly, and scooted all the way standing up. Grice missed the point. Later in the quarter after Bock Hill covered a Florence fumble on the Iacket nine, lim Neal plowed to the two and Gary Stephens slammed his way over the middle. This time Grice's placement was good. NEELY BHUNSON GM-I-MAN Tackle Tqcklg Gllllfd CORLEY HALEY HAWKINS Center Buck Center H. W. IENKINS, Head Coach C. E. MCCAW, Assistant Coach L. E. AVERY. Assistant Coach Butch Phillips led the drive which accounted tor the last score and finally plowed over from the one. Crice's kick for the point was wide. ROCK HILL 13 COLUMBIA 13 This was one the Columbia Caps were doped to win COCLCAQ5 by two touchdowns. With George out, the Bearcats weren't given a chance to stop hard-running Buster Bhame and his cohorts. But the Bock Hillians more than held their own and came up with a 13-l3 deadlock. This game more than any other displayed the fighting spirit which marked the play of the Bearcats. Columbia scored in the second quarter when an at- tempted quick kick by Karl Grice hit a Bock Hill player and bounded into the end zone. There Bobby Neely ot Columbia grabbed it for a touchdown, Bhame kicked the point. In the third quarter limmy Wells ran 7l yards for the second Cap tally. The kick for the point was wide. Despite the two-touchdown deticit the Bearcats roared back. Bobby Falls intercepted a Cap pass and blazed 50 yards down the sidelines to set up the first Bock Hill counter. Two plays later Grice tired to lim Phillips in the end zone for the score. Grice also added the point. Later Captain Bobby Tinkler partially blocked a Colum- bia punt and the 'Cats took over on the Cap 45. A long pass and a penalty put the ball on the one and Hal Saver- ance bulled over guard for the score. Grice missed the point. AND CHEERLEADERS Swain Wright, Tinlcler, and lohnny Brunson were lead- ers in a Rock Hill line which played a magnificent game. ROCK HILL 21 GEORGETOWN 7 For the first time since l936 the Bearcats were meeting a foe other than Chester on Thanksgiving Day. Officials had decided that a cooling off period between the two old rivals was necessary. So, the Georgetown Gators came to Rock Hill, but they couldn't stop the Bearcats. Thirteen Beacats were play- ing their last game in a High School uniform and they bowed out in a blaze of glory. Captain Bobby Tinkler tallied the first touchdown when he made a leaping catch of a Karl Grice pass in the end zone. lt was the best catch of the year at the Stadium. Grice added the first of his three points from placement. Saverance accounted for the second Rock Hill marker. With the ball on the midfield stripe in the third period, he broke through the middle for 48 yards. ln the next play he blasted over for the TD. Saverance also got the final marker on a one-yard plunge after a l3-yard ad- vance by Butch Phillips set the play up. fuel Sweatte turned in a 90-yard kickoff return for the Gators' only score.
