, . nncu fans nun msn scnnm . ', ,1, 1 Hoon fnus :mums Though uncertoin the future be, to all of life we hold the key. We hove by God been be- stowed with mony greot gifts, Life itself, the most precious. We have been given the key to all of life, But must not use it, ogcinst the will of God. For the key would then corrode, and turning to dust drift owcxy And we would spend eternity seorching down the endless holls of time for the dust of that key. She has molded the Junior Class into a group working together with close relationship, everyone doing his part to better himself and the school. She has offered her untiring efforts in organizing the Junior-Senior Prom, conducting the sale of Christmas Cards, and helping on other class proiects to make the Junior Class a success. Much responsibility falls on Miss Taylor's shoulders during the year, responsibility other than that of advising the Junior Class, and yet she has time to give her full attention to both. She puts the problems of the Junior Class on an equal level of importance with her own responsibilities. We, the class of 1955 contribute to Miss Taylor most of the credit for making our Junior Class a success and know that in the future all Junior Classes will be just as successful as ours has been. 5 ,f-., xnxx, ,X M, u'E 'Nv. ' - ' The primary purpose of the Photo Club is of course to acquaint its members with the intricasies and mysteries ot photography. As the students progress in the knowledge ot photography these are clarified in their minds and the mysteries soon melt away to become concrete knowledge. Photography that is understood is no magic trick or magic art but applied science which is soon understood and comprehended. Students taking part in the Photo Club learn the fundamentals which include picture taking, developing, printing, and enlarging. Special nights are devoted to tinting of pictures, portrait making and the more advance stages ot picture taking. 64 Annual Staff First Row-Maxine Ehrat, Dona Virtue, Betty Boese, Elaine Engelhardt, Evelyn Martin, Judy Werland, Marlene Knowles, Betty Jo lngold, Pat Connell. Thereafter, meetings began to present problems to the inexperienced seniors on the staff. After several meetings an-d a lot of hard work, things began to develope and a yearbook took shape . We can say, though, that the work was fascinating, fun, and eventually rewarding. Mr. Terry and the boys worked hard the tirst two years and set a good foundation for wrestling. Mr. Swierczewski has taken over where Mr. Terry left oft. This last season our boys started slow, but with the help ot the coach getting married, they started a winning streak that never stopped until the end of the season which put the boys on a 6 win, 4 loss season. Richard Martin was the only senior on the team this season and did a fine iob as captain of the squad for the last season. - w ' I' 9 S i n First row-left to right: Robert Nutt, Kenneth Clevenger, Eugene Harrell, Wayne Gopp, Lorry Sconlon, Dick Martin, Norden Scanlon, Kenny Neuslouum. Football The T954 football season can be classified as a successful season. The teams record was five wins, three losses, and cne tie. A school record was set with the team holding their losing opponents score- less. The Princeton game was the best game our boys played. The game was played under the hazards of rain and a muddy field and even though Prince- ton was one of the few teams that had downed the powerful Rochelle Hubs , the game ended with the Rockets in a tie. Most of the first string lineup consisted of seniors but there were many iuniors who made a fine show- ing and will no doubt make an excellent showing in the 1955 season. Many thanks go to coach Mac- Donald for his fine work inspiring the boys on to victory. They were the highest scoring Frosh-Soph team in the history of Rock Falls Township High School, with 1,298 points to their opponents i,O7O. Helping them to break that record was their excep- tionally high shooting percentage of field goals and free throws. Neil Otten set an all time scoring record with 327 points on the Frosh-Soph squad. The boys on the team possessed a real desire to learn, to be cooperative, and to win. These qualities in the team proved very profitable by winning the Frosh- Soph tournament held in our new gymnasium. Jim Schultz and Dennis Morath were the capable managers, and they did a very efficient iob. Fred Nehrkorn was on the team lout was not present at the time the picture was taken. We are honored to be the first class to graduate in the new addition. Our freshman year was filled with many trials and tribulations, such as face most freshies . Find- ing your way around in the new surroundings, learning to work combination lockers, remembering not to chew gum or talk in Study Halls were some of our problems. Although we had our difficulties, we still managed to have fun. At our picnic, held in Sinissippi Park, we had our share land then somel of the food usually found at Freshman class picnics. Most of us participated in the games provided, volley-ball, baseball, etc. Some of the more adventurous ones climbed the trails and tried crossing the little stream on the stepping stones. Then there were others-they fell in! Our Freshman class officers were Carol Carl, president, Earl Gray, vice-presiclent, Vernon John- son, secretary and treasurer. Our student council representatives were Elaine Engelhardt, Jackie Skaggs, and Dick Stern. 'The teachers who advised and helped us through our first year in high school were Mr. Vipond, chair- man, Miss Fife, Miss Gay, Mr. Eliot, Mr. Johnson, and Mr. Mills. Thanks go to all of them! Next September brought us back for more. It felt good to be Sophomores too. We learned among other things, that you never say kneecap , but pa- tella , and it's not shoulder blade , it's scapula. I doubt if any of us got twenty words per minute in Personal Typing and a balance sheet rarely balanc- ed in Personal Record Keeping. Lots of fun was in store for us at our picnic which was held in Sinissippi Park. We elected Betty Storlien as president, Richard Aggen, vice-president, and Kurt Reichardt as secre- tary-treasurer. Representatives to the student council were Patricia Connell, James Kerr and Gary Thomp- son. After we made the grade we were upper class- men. We elected Gary Thompson, president, Betty Storlien, vice-president, Kurt Reichardt, secretary, and Maxine Ehrat, treasurer. Everyone worked hard to earn money that busy junior year. We sold candy, milk, popcorn, gum and coke, not to mention magazines and Christmas cards. The seniors were co-sponsors with us in putting on the Homecoming Dance, October l7, l953. Donna Gelsinger was elected as queen and reigned over the affair. On November 20, l953, the iunior class pre- sented the Curious Savage , written by John Patrick, directed by Mr. James Andrews. Dramatic talent was abundant and the play was a success. On May 22, l954, the night of prom, we fully realized our efforts were not in vain. Our theme was Evening in Paris. Paris herself couldn't have been more lovely and romantic that night as Barbara Beckley reigned as the Prom Queen. We greatly appreciated the efforts of Miss Taylor, who assisted us greatly, as chairman of our class advisors. Thanks also go to our other class advisors, Miss Gay, Miss MacLean, Miss Stengle, Mr. Barkdoll, Mr. Brewer, and Mr. Pederson. ln September of T954 we seniors took our place in the halls of Rock Falls High. Us? Yes, usl Phyllis Krone served as president the first semester. Second semester, Darrell Livingston assumed the duties of that office. The second semester Maxine Ehrat was voted in as the new vice-president, Bill Chapman was our secretary and Karen Calkins served as treasurer. The senior representatives to the Student Council were Betty Jo lngold, Don Ebenezer, and Ronald Hasselman. The class advisors were headed by Mr. Baker, assisted by' Mrs. Shults, Miss Warren, Mr. Miller, Mr. Donisch, Mr. Mills, and Mr. McDonald. We chose as our motto, The Higher You Climb, The Better the View. As our colors, aqua and white were chosen and the white rose as our flower. We helped the iuniors sponsor the Homecoming Dance for which Linda McGlashan was elected Queen. The Christmas Formal was also sponsored by the seniors. When we look back on all the work that it took to achieve this goal of graduation, we surely realize that every bit of the toil was worth it. We now have in our possession something that no one can take away from us. We are truly grateful to be citizens in such a great land where we have the opportunity to receive an education. Class Prophecy The other day, Friday, August 4, l975, we saw iust found on their late trip to Africa. While in Bill Leland and Jerry Eubanks pondering over some Africa they met some old classmates now touring rare insects, in their own laboratory, which were the world as newspaper journalists, Isola Stringer cmd Janeen Detweiler. ' Back home Jerry Law and Fay Tedrick are keep- ing the home fires burning at their seven-room house up on the mountains in Arkansas. Carol Clifton has recently admitted her 25th orphan at her orphanage which is in a nearby town. ln Nashville we see the world's typical successful bachelor, Bill Janssen, sitting in an easy chair listening to Come Back My Love. A few days ago Glen Hendryx was on a va- cation with his wife and children getting away from his cement factory. While in New York City he stopped in and visited Cherry Strike, newly elected governor of New York. Also in New York City are Nancy Car-Skaden, a frustrated art instructor and Violet Gray, a songwriter who has iust composed a hit, You Can't Take It With You, So l Didn't Bother To Get Any. Ed Davis and Eugene Frump have just completed their plans for a multi-million dollar airplane and car combination. They received loans for this from Phyllis Sprankle and Kurt Reichardt, the newly elect- ed president of the First National Bank of Mars. Especially trained expert mechanics to keep this vehicle in top-notch condition are Jerry O'Brien, Robert Olds, George Pendgraft and Paul Simester. Carolyn Holaday and Jessie Patton have proven themselves as very competent secretaries for the governor of Illinois, Ronnie Rick. Betty Storlien has been appearing on her hus- band's weekly TV program. Roy Dale Megli is their producer and Phyllis Nelson is the dress designer. Pat Pfeffer owns a large chain store and finds time each day to take her French Poodle for a stroll in the park. Vice-president in charge of the billion dollar business is Gary Thompson. Each day he delivers groceries to Terry Boehm and Vernon Johnson who are so busy writing novels that they don't have time to go to the store. A new community has appeared on the face of the map. A group of 1955 graduates have founded an ideal community, on the banks of the Azybuadus Ritfer, featuring free bubble gum. Credit for the superb bubble gum recipe goes to Evelyn Martin. Palmer Swanson was one of the leading scientists who helped prove the effectiveness of Top Pop Bub- ble Gum. Carol Corl proved the elasticity of Top Pop by blowing a bubble which lasted for a week until all the air escaped from it. Pat Connell has the difficult iob of over-seeing the distribution of Top Pop. First in line every day to get their supply is Pat Abney and Bill Bronson, as they chew it while flying their blimps to calm their nerves. Azybuadus is grieving the loss of one their pioneers, Frances McCombs, whose talents were demanded in Waken- haugia. She ioined Linda Klocke and Marlene Knowles in their campaigns for a 36 hour day. Op- posing them are Anita Williams and Lloyd Pence who are fighting for the retention of the 24 hour day. The debate has gone to the Supreme Court where Don Ebenezer, Chief Justice, and his associates, Richard Aggen, Jim Eshelman, Kenneth Girardi, Don Nehr- korn, Leo Nardini, Glenn Murray, Walter Wright, and Dave Waters will make the crucial decision. Recently Marilyn Day and Delores Carlson in their co-role as Secretaries of Agriculture took the Rocket Special designed by Richard Stern to Venus. Meeting them at the station was Larry Coppotelli, who is president of the Green Grass Growers ot Venus. With him were some of the leading citizens, Ardith Anderson, Anna Parks, Jackie Skaggs, Bill Pilcher, Neil Hinrichs, and Robert Kline. After visiting the spinach farms of Ronald Hasselman, Richard Beelenclorf, and Kent Goodrich, she was completely sold on the quality of the spinach. Upon returning to the capital city of Venus she and Bill Chapman, chief executive of Venus, signed an agreement insuring us of 20,000 tons of spinach annually. Barbara King was very enthusiastic over the new import and placed an order immediately to in- sure the health of her six fat-cheeked children. Karen Calkins, Norma Cook and Dona Virtue, known medical consultants, made a tour stressing the need of spinach in the daily diet. A quick trip to Alaska gave us a chance to meet some more classmates. There we found Barbara McNinch so involved digging gold out of the roughs with a plastic toothpick she didn't even have time to speak. Back in Africa we find Jim Keime, Don Mc- Glashan, and Rowland Gillette trying to supply the natives with TV sets and electric blankets. Perhaps more successful though are Charles Bucy, Virgil Smith and Darrell Livingston who are there selling air-conditioning units. We came back around by Hollywood bringing Donna Wike and Loretta Davis to Pat Basil's beauty salon so they could get a poodle cut before they met Wayne Edeus, Jim Sikkema, and James Kerr who were sponsoring them in a new chorus program. Marie Hermes and Sarah Rowe are world fam- ous acrobats and occasionally they meet up with a couple of professional wrestlers, namely, Richard Martin and Gordon Rolofson. We read in Roberta Wolber and Judy Werland's newspaper about Max- ine Ehrat and Bonnie Rude taking the winning picture of the national photo contest. lt was of Tony Cop- potelli flag pole sitting. Headlines were screaming the crowning of Betty Jo Ingold as Miss America. Runners up were Barbara Osborne, Elaine Engel- hardt, and Betty Sefton. Another news item was quite extensive telling of Pat Baker, Ruth Nutt, Betty Boseneiler, Carol Jones, Betty Boese, and Violet Ingalls who upon graduation from high school joined the WAC's and have now started their march around the world. Traveling through New York we were surprised to see one of our old high school chums, Jean Tompkins, sitting on top of the empire state building dangling her feet in the birdbath of a neighbor's penthouse garden. Gene Horner gracious- ly supplies water. Jean Flosi, warden of Nevada's state prison is overheard instructing her class of women policemen, Sue lnsley, Jeanne Proctor, Betty Finders, and Joan Moran on iudo. Upon arriving at Reno, Nevada we see the famous Shirley Kinmon Cemetary. Trusted caretakers are Elizabeth Hall and Sally Car-Skaden, Marjorie Purkapile is out watering the flowers with a squirt gun. Jeanette Johnson and Shirley Rohde are busily trimming the beautiful hedge with cuticle scissors while Sandra Farthing and Sandra Charleston are applying fingernail polish to the faded roses. As the scene fades we hear the soft music of the Angelic trio, Dorothy Simester, Janet Schueler, and Mary Ann Buell, accomplished musicians, lustily singing, Wake Up Ye Dead, Ya Can't Get Nowhere In The Same Old Rut. On March 26 the Sectional Speech Contest was held at DeKalb, illinois. The speech contestants with the debate team, play crew and the play Marriage Proposal of Rock Falls High School made this trip which proved very successful. Donna Billeaux was entered in extempore speaking, Louise Leach in original oration, Karen Calkins in extempore poetry reading: Bob Miller in radio speaking, Jim Kerr comedy play reading. The above did not place in the first five. Carol Carl doing serious play reading took a third. Kurt Reichardt in original monologue received a fourth and Roberta Roebuck entered in after dinner speaking received a fifth. At the end of the day the play pulled through with flying colors and received a first. Those in the cast were Jim Kerr, Carol Corl and Palmer Swanson. Although each one did a wonderful iob it was necessary to have a first or second before being able to go on to State. This was the first time any speech entry from Rock Falls had gone to State under the direction of Mr. Andrews and we are very proud of their accomplishment. The play cost and play crew made the trip to Champaign on April l5th and l6th. Those with the crew were Don Ebenezer, Gary Thompson, Patsy McKinney, Betty Jo lngold and Art Donisch. Rock Falls being a small town, wasn't very well known and there was certainly tough competition from the larger schools. Even this proved to be no handicap to the cast when they came home with a third from State. Left to Right: Palmer Swanson, Carol Corl and Jim Kerr. The scene was that of a parlor in an New England home. As the curtains opened for the second and third acts the audience was even more surprised as before their eyes there was the second completely different set. The two sets were two of the very finest that R.F.H.S. has ever had and it was quite an accomplishment to set up the second set in such a short period of time. As this was the seniors last chance to try their hand at acting on the high school stage and it was their own senior class play they worked diligently to present their very best, and that they did. Those working hard taking part in the play under Director James Andrews were, Edwyn Davis, Betty Jo lngold, Carol Jones, Dave Waters, Jim Kerr, Frances McCombs, Carolyn Holaday, Ronald Hasselmon, Vernon Johnson, Evelyn Martin, Don Ebenezer, Kurt Reichardt, Leo Nardini, Palmer Swanson, Elaine Englehardt, Glenn Hendryx, Don McGlashan, and Betty Boese.
