RB hasn ' t become one by chance. Careful selection of teachers, en- couragement for personal achievement, promotion of school spirit and unity, and a vision of perfection among staff and student body combine to give RB a re- spected status. Traditions like the Spirit Stick and DUT help establish RB ' s indi- viduality. Every aspect of a picture contributes to its success, just as every aspect of Rock Bridge works to make our school Picture Perfect. Although the students and faculty have always known this to be true, it was nice to be offi- cially recognized. The Rock Bridge Senior High School sign symbolizes the firm foundation our school pro- vides for all students. Our students are shown as al- ways on top and the school exists to help further their education and future goals. On the top left is the official plaque of recognition pre- sented to Dr. Wayne Walk- er, principal, in Washington, D.C. in October, 1987. The top right photo is the Rock Bridge High School crest. Both the plaque and the crest are in the Commons area. GOOD TO ME INSIDE RB Remember . . The major setback was injuries to key play- ers that took valuable talent out of the games. Despite this fact, the team was still determined. Said Coach Henage. The team had a very good attitude this year. There were times when they could have been down because of close games lost, but they kept going. Coaches: Dan Nichols. Terry Whitney, Dan Devine. Generally, the attitude re- mained positive throughout the season, said Coach Reimler. The girls ' endeavors may not have been rewarded by a winning season, but Coach Reimler says that, there were games when we gave supreme effort. The record did not properly do justice to the amount of tal- ent on the team. Says Coach Reimler, There was a lot of potential on this year ' s squad. Left page, clockwise. Steve Mermelst _ (ham, Scott Powell- I. Photo by Will Johns ' 1987 was a very succussful year for our soc- cer team. The long, everyday practices really paid off when the team advanced to the state semifinals. The year went pretty much as ex- pected according to the coaches; with a 16-8-1 record. Coach Lewis said that, ... the strength of the team is that they function well as a team. They are all good athletes. Coach Pitchford commented, Over the course of the year we ' ve developed and become more cohe- sive as a team. They are a good defensive team and have broken many records. During the season the team played Hickman twice; the first game a tie in double overtime, and the second a 1-0 loss. In the semi-finals against Penbroke Hills RB fell just short of advancing to the final game of the state championships. After a no score and four overtimes, each team was given 5 penalty shots. RB converted 3 shots to score, but Pen- broke Hills turned four, winning the game 4-3. The soccer team was the first from RB to ad- vance this far in the State finals. Congratula- tions for an outstanding season. 3. Photo by Coluinbia Tribune Clockwise. LR Steve Mermelstein, pleased with his performance. Jason Burnes dribbles the ball down Field. ' i uio by PamcU Burl Junior varsity and varsity cheerleaders can always be seen boost- ing school spirit at sports events, but it isn ' t as easy as it looks. Hours of practice go into learning new cheers and working as a group. In the summer our cheerleaders go to MG Cheerleading Camp for two weeks. Here, they learn new cheers and experiment with cheers of their own. For the past two years the Bruin cheerleaders have won the Key to the Spirit, the highest honor bestowed to cheerleaders at this camp, and this past summer they placed third for overall cheering. We worked hard but had a lot of fun and had many new exper- iences, said Lisa Montgomery, JV captain. Lisa McKee, varsity cap- tain, added, We all get along and things went well. Cheerleaders learn to work as a team, not unlike the one out on the field or on the court, and form a sense of unity between the crowd and the team. On a closing note, Titia White, JV cheerleader, commented about the sterotypical cheerleader. Not all of the cheerleaders are blond bombshells. In fact, this year we have three brunettes. I. Dowd offers Harvey a mini. Elwood introduces himself to the doctor ' s wife. Veta Simmons after a traumatic stay in a sanitarium. What is a pooka? According to Alex Eichenberg, a pooka is from old Celtic mythology; a fairy spirit in animal form. In this year ' s fall play, Harvey , Alex plays Elwood P. Dowd, a very proper, polite gen- tleman whose best friend was a six foot tall invisible rabbit (a pooka) named Harvey. Elwood and Harvey go everywhere together, which often causes a scene when Elwood insists upon introducing Harvey to his friends, for only Elwood could actu- ally see Harvey. His sister. Miss Veta Simmons, played by Kristina Schmitz, and his niece. Miss Myrtle Mae Simmons, played by Leslie Stamper, consider Elwood an em- barrassment to the family name. The play tells the story of a series of funny misunderstandings through which Elwood invariably comes out on top. The play was a success and a lot of fun for everyone involved. Row 1. LR Liz Abshier. PtMtos by Eddie OcV MniBZMm myiyiez This past December the choral groups presented a form of entertainment new to RB- a Madrigal dinner. They sang renaissance music to the audience while serving a wonder- ful dinner of crown pork roast. Included in the evening ' s festivities were the royal instrumental musicians, the royal dancers, a juggler, a puppet show, the Queen ' s favorite lady-in-waiting (played by Pamela Burks), and of course, the court jester (played by Martin Pope). Mr. Bohon and Ms. Black played the King and Queen, and the choir mem- bers were the townspeople. Senior Kristina Schmitz summed up the dinner by say- ing, The evening proved to be enjoyable for us as well as the audience. It certainly was more unique than anything RB choirs have done before. The group competed in a contest in Crest- land. Iowa, and performed for many schools and public establish- ments. We practiced between three and five hours on Sundays and about two hours after school every day. says senior Janet Bay. Halfway through the Homecoming Parade, the band marches on in step and with pride. Long practices in late summer and cold early morning practices helped this year ' s marching band have an- other successful season. With a cre- ative field show and the hard work of the band members, the marching band placed in all the contests it attended. It placed third at Washington, took first at Francis Howell, and came in second at the Greater St. Louis competition at Busch Stadium, only one point from first place. The drum line placed first in all three contests, continuing the tradition of ex- cellence set by percussionists in past years. The drum line spent many hours before and after school perfecting their percussion feature, composed by band director Rich Hadfield and former RB drum line member, Ted Gaines. For the most part, we (the drum line) knew we could do it. We knew we had it in us. but we just had to work at it, says Charley Waddill of the drum line. Summing up the marching band sea- son, Julie Wagner says, Marching band brought us closer together. We (band members) became friends at the beginning of the year and now we ' re J comfortable around each other. S ! l .«r.- . It plays the role of the pep band at basketball games, and adds a touch of class by having the instrumen- talists wear tuxedo shirts and bow ties. The jazz band competes in a music contest in Hannibal every spring, and performs as the backup jazz music in this year ' s spring musical. I940 ' s Radio Days. Student Council serves as an intermediary between administration and the students. It allows students to present their own ideas to the council members who can in turn bring the ideas up in meetings. Student council sponsors several school dances and orga- nized the blood drive. Class officers sponsor fund raisers to make money for class activi- ties, especially senior prom. Student council also sponsors buses to away games and works concession stands at winter sports events. The Ambassadors is a service organization formed to help new students assimilate into RB and become acquainted with other students. Each year ambassadors receive a new student to take to the annual barbeque, football games and the banquet. The Ambassadors also send Christmas cards to new students, hold a bake sale and keep a current bulletin board in the lunch room. Students Against Drunk Driving was started at RB in 1984 and continues to promote its two main objectives. The first is to make students aware of the hazards of driving drunk. The second is to encourage positive peer pressure to prevent students from drunk driving. SADD uses stickers and announcements in the bulletin to support its cause. Kids Listening To Kids is a peer support group started in 1985 by v rs. Cockriel, guidance counselor. Members are selected by the student body by way of a survey and go through a 10 week course to prepare them to listen to fellow students and help solve their problems. This group provides another alternative for students who feel more comfortable talking to peers rather then adults. The season came to a climactic end with DeVenney and Walker becoming state champs. DeVenney won the 125 lb class in the last second of his final match, finishing the year with an unde- feated record. Walker placed first in the 160 lb class after placing fourth in districts. Walker summed up the season by saying, Friendship. All my friends are on the team. It was fun having them go to state with me. The season was plagued by one point losses on home court, which fueled criticism about fan support from Coach Jim Scanlon. We have no home court advan- tage. I feel sorry for our players. They ' re working their tails off, and everybody seems to have something else to do. Fans re- sponded by filling the stands dur- ing the next home game wearing bags on their heads and sporting tee shirts proclaiming, It ' s My Fault . The show of fans wasn ' t futile, the Bruins won by 30 points. The Bruins finished the season 16-10. Pholo by Championship Photo Row 1 L to R: Ellis Carter. Heath Thompson. Dan Stubler. Over 80 booths were set up with the help of the University of Missouri, Stephens and Columbia colleges. Columbia health professionals, and the Columbia Depart- ment of Health. Four RB students who had worked with OMC over the summer also had projects on display. Among the presentations were booths from local hospitals and the Red Cross. Many of these displays offered student participation, from having one ' s blood pressure taken to find- ing out if one ' s stress level is too high. Several of the booths handed out freebies like pens and pencils. Dr. Wenona Robertson, science teacher and organizer of the health fair, said the purpose of the fair was to promote knowledge and aware- ness of health related professional fields and that it was very successful.
