In every meet they went to, they were very competitive. Rock Bridge would be very proud of these people, boasted Coach Hamilton of the 1986 Cross Country team. It was a season with big successes along with some setbacks, too. Between colds, injuries, and rainy days the Bruins ended up with a record of 3-3. The girls didn ' t have enough people to compete as a team, but Jody Rhodes went farther than anyone else to place in the Sectional Meet. Running on the Cross Country team takes dedication, and that is exactly what Coach Hamilton expects from his runners. It ' s not easy with practices sometimes going over 10 miles a day, but all the team members agree that it ' s worth it in the end. 28 V β t β’β J., h Photos by Geoffrey Meyer 29 TENNIS Tennis had a winning season this year despite the fact that it was a very young team, with only two Senior players. Anna Vemer commented on the season, It was very different from last season since we lost several of our key players, but we managed to come back and have a very successful season and a lot of fun, too. They look forward to coming years. We had a lot of new, fresh faces with great promise to give RB a good team with a fine future. Row 1 (LR) Carrie Campbell, Kathy Vincent, Jana Procell. Al- though they finished with a record of 1- 7, all the girls agree that it was a win- ning season in spirit. Next year we will have a better team than this year. There were only two veteran players and the others didn ' t have the experience. com- mented Suzy Ollar, who went on to place 8th in State. The Senior Homemaking classes provided the food and the workers in this production. While the film version highlights a football player pulled from his life too soon, on stage it is a boxer. Tim Overshiner played the boxer, Joe, who is in search of a new body with the help of Heaven ' s staff. Joe falls in love with Bethy Logan, Karen Lang, when he is living in one of the bodies. The marching season got off to a nice start w ith a 5th place showing at the Francis Howell contest with the drum line and flag corps each placing second. The definite highlight of the whole season though was the Busch Stadium Contest, where 37 bands from across Missouri. Illinois, and Kentucky compet- ed. It was an all-day affair, and the band spent the bus ride to St. Louis psyching themselves for the performance. Everyone was nervous during the few minutes before the show, but the ner- vousness payed off. They were to perform the best show all year. Rock Bridge was the envy of everyone as they swept their division, taking first place in every category: overall band, out- standing drum major, outstanding drum line, and outstanding flag corps. Two of the band mem- bers catapulted Mr. Hadfield to their shoulders, and the whole band ran screaming and chanting all the way to the bus. The whole experience provided some great memories for the band. They got to spend time together as a group and had the unforgettable feeling of winning their whole division (which no other band accompli- shed). Drum major David Diggs. a senior. said. It was a great feeling to stand in front of thou- sands of people at Busch Stadium and be recog- nized as being the best when you ' ve had so much fun getting there. Senior Bucky Stamper added that. In junior high I always looked forward to band at Rock Bridge, and my three years at RB have been even better than I had expected. It ' s the times like Busch Stadium that I ' ll always remember. All our hard work really payed off. Mike Wagner sums it up best with. We banded together as a unit. Honorable Mention District Band β Flutes-Carol Slusher. Karen Clark. Saxapt ones-David Diggs. Bob Roemer, Eddie Orr. With a 21-5 record, our boys basketball team gave us a season of enthusiasm and of accom- plishments. Rock Bridge often pulled away and won in the last few minutes keeping their fans on their feet. Led by Seniors Jim Horton, Kyle Bramon, and Melvin Gibson. RB was ranked at the state level. There were several surprises this year. One being the gutsy playing of senior Bob Roemer from off the bench and of sopho- more Todd Satalowich. The other being our loss to Hickman in the Jefferson City Tourna- ment when a foul was called on us at the end of regulation time giving Hickman the point to end the tie. Rock Bridge, however, came back to avenge their loss and become District Champions. They did this by beating that other Columbia team, the Kewpies in two overtimes. While Hickman ' s fans showed up at the game in shirts reading Jim Who and Hickman Kew- pies, 1987 District Champions, we forced them to put those shirts in the backs of their closets. We became the District Champions and if they didn ' t know who Jim Horton was, his slam dunk in itself settled that score. It was Kyle Bramon who scored the four free throws in the second overtime to give us the lead. His assuredness on the court nailed many of the important shots. As the second overtime ended with the score Bruins 55, Kewpies 51, Rock Bridge students poured onto the floor to congratulate the players and to sing the school song. Kyle Bramon expressed the thoughts of all when saying, Man, everything after this is just icing. GIRLS ' BASKETBALL Row 1- Tracy Toler. Jo Graham, Leigh Herbst. Jennifer Neese. Janie Jackson.
