BOYS TENNIS The boys tennis season can be summed up in one phrase . . . Nothing matters until districts. This year ' s team had five goals: beat Marshall, Jeff City. Hickman, win conference and districts. They achieved all of them in some form. The team finished with a 9-6 record. The team won the Moberly tourna- ment. Seniors Bob Jackson and Rusty Walls won titles as the team missed first place by ' 2 point. The team ' s major goal was to win districts. After some very tough and close losses during the regular season, the team wanted to peak at districts, and they did. They accumulated an amazing 26.5 team points, thus running away with the district crown. All four of the team entries made the semi-finals. The doubles team of Bob Jackson and Andy Materer, as expected, advanced to state. The surprises came from the rest of the Bruins. Rusty Walls and Marc Patterson, both unseeded, advanced to state. Tim Williams and Hunter Hoff- man making the semi-finals through a series of upsets was not predicted. The Bruins went into the State tournament content upon being there. But Jackson and Materer had other things on their minds, a state title. They played flawless tennis on the first day of competition, winning two close matches. They went into Saturday ' s semi-finals confident, but ran into stiff competition. They fell in straight sets to the eventual state champs. The team finished 7th at state. It was a very successful year. First year coach Allen Richardson should be proud, as should everyone on the team. We had some ups and downs but in the end, when it counted, at districts we played great! Congratulations to the whole team, it was incredible. By the way I ' ll never eat another doughnut again.
