If you were a stranger walking in the front door, you ' d wonder what ' s going on. People are reading, talking, eating, studying, goofing off. There ' s a teacher around sometimes, but often not, or at least not visible. Yet. everything seems generally in control. Oh sure, once in awhile somebody gets loud or goes running off somewhere, but ordinarily it ' s quite calm. It ' s an ordinary, hum-drum day in the Rock Bridge Commons. Daily (Inassigned Time. It ' s a successful experiment rooted in the laid-back ' seventies roots of RB, and it works, because Rock Bridge students make it work. HOMECOMING Homecoming ' 85 was a day filled with colorful events. It began with the drama department ' s skit at the homecoming assembly. Then the traditional pa- rade down Broadway displayed the classes ' floats, the queen candidates, and the band. The final events that night were the game against Moberiy, the crown- ing of the homecoming queen Debbie Mattson, and the annual homecoming dance. 1985 Homecoming candidates: (first row) Lori Kovar. As fans, we go to the various games to see Rock Bridge carried to victory, encouraged by the roar of the crowd and the energetic chants of the cheerleaders. From the stands everyone can tell they are having fun, but seldom do we stop and think about the amount of work they ' re putting in to make their efforts successful. Hours of excercise, memorization of new cheers, and a sense of rhythm combine in the team- work needed to bring the spectators alive. Being a cheerleader means having enthusiasm and ener- gy. And the benefits reaped are important. One learns to work with a team, not unlike the one out on the field, and forms a sense of togetherness with the other cheerleaders. We owe a lot to this year ' s cheerleaders, for once more they have successfully represented Rock Bridge ' s school spirit. The JV cheerleaders smile as they ride down Broadway during the homecoming parade. How can you say something positive? What good happened? Try this: school records were set for the most receptions in a game, (Eddie Orr-8) in a season, (Orr-26) most receiving yardage in a season, (Orr-400) longest pass play (Alley-Lightner-93) most passes completed in a single game, (Roger Alley-17) in a season, (Alley-76) most passing yardage in a game, (Alley- 256) in a season, (Alley-1062). Besides all that, 68 guys finished the season trying even harder than when they started. They didn ' t give up, they constantly improved, they provided a strong basis for next season. There. That ' s what can be said about this 1-8 team, and you can ' t say this much about a lot of teams with winning records. Good job, guys. GIRL ' S GOLF 1st row: Coach Bob Burns. Gayla Grossnickle. Led by seniors Barb Blan- char. Lori Kovar and Gayla Grossnickle with help from sophomore Suzy Ollar, the Bruins compiled a 5-3 record. The team placed second at the Conference tournament and fourth at the District tournament. Barb Blanchar qualified once again for the State tournament and placed second. New Coach Bob Burns said the year was a pleasant experience . He did a great job even though he had to miss more school in one quarter than he has in his entire teaching ca- reer. Because teamwork was strongly stressed throughout the year, the sea- son ended with a record surpassing other previous years, of 16 wins, 2 ties, and 4 losses. As a result of their continuing effort the team brought in two 1st place and one 3rd place trophy. 1) f ' xy V ' iV ■v:- «0 ' -. ' A 4 GIRL ' S TENNIS Row 1 LR- Carrie Reese, Jennifer Hawks. Led by seniors Liz Sulzberger, Anny Snook and Ruth Klachko at numbers one, two and three respectively, the Bruins compiled a 10-2 record. The team took second place at the Conference tournament. For the fourth consecutive year the Bruins brought the district trophy home and qualified three participants for the State Champion- ships. The Bruins went into the tournament three-time defending champions but the fourth was not to be. Liz Sulzberger took second in singles, falling 7-6, 6-4 in the final. Amy Snook and Ruth Klachko placed second in the doubles competition. The Bruins missed the State Championship by one-half of a point. Liz Sulzberger finished her high-school career with an incredible 47-2 record which included two State doubles titles and runner-up in singles and doubles once each. Amy Snook finished her outstanding career with a 35-1 record and a State doubles title to go along with being runner up in doubles twice. Choir participate in numerous concerts and contests throughout the school year; singing for school activities, social and other frater- nal organizations, as well as graduation and many other activi- ties. Students involved in chorus also have the opportunity to sing in small groups or as soloists at District and State music Festi- vals. Although choirs at RB have frequently excelled in competi- tion (winning many trophies and top ratings,) the most important contribution of the choral music program is allowing students to experience the personal satisfac- tion gained from using the vocal instrument in a combined group effort, producing the kind of es- thetic musical experience t hat can be matched in no other way. 1 Hiss! The most heard phrase around RB this winter was ROAD TRIP. The fan support at away games was incredible. We have great fans! Especially at the road qames. They helped win some games for us. The numbers could have been greater but the fans that were there were loud! said Bruins Coach Jim Scanlon. The more than forty wins seemed to blur together but some stood out. No one can forget the boys ' emotion-packed victory over Hickman in the RB tournament, or the girls comefrom-behind win at Macon. The guys finished the season with 22-4 record and the num- ber 8 ranking in the state. Led by seniors Matt Bendict. B.T. Washington, and Brian Taylor the Bruins won the Fulton tour- nament, placed third in the capitol city tournament, and tied for first in conference. Juniors Kyle Bramon and Jim Horton were the final ingredients to make a great team. Their chemistry was almost unstoppable. Benedict on the outs.de. Bramon and Horton on the inside. The Bruins finished the season on a nine game winning streak. The home stretch began m the cham- Lnship game of the Fulton tournament against Fulton. The Bruins Jim Horton slammed home a monster dunk to give the Bruins a 4-2 lead and they never looked back. The seas- ended when that other team from Columbia ' topped the Brums in the district final. The year will never be forgotten. It was a year of accomplishments, friendships, and winning ThanKS for the memories. RMJ Its been a fun year! I never thought we would win twenty- plus james. I wouldn ' t trade it in for anything. Senior Matt Bene- dict. Hey Coach Scanlon, I didn ' t want to say anything during the game, but against Rolla in districts the second b utton on your shirt was undone and it looked kind of tacky. - Senior Brian Taylor. The Lady Bruins steam-rolled through their season to a 21-4 mark at the end of the regular season. Led by Seniors Kara Kramer, Amy Snook, Anne Horton, and Angle Lear the Lady Bruins placed first in the Booneville Tournament, third in the Fatima Tournament, and received consolation in the Hannibal Tournament. Kara Kramer set a new school record for re- bounds. Amy Snook became the first RB player ever to bring two right shoes to a ball game, and the team was the first girls team to win twenty games at RB. One of their keys to success was the girls ' easygoing attitude. To these girls, everything was a joke. RMJ This has been one of the most memorable and exciting seasons I ' ve had. The attitude of the players and coaches, as well as the success we had. made it a season I wifl remember for a very long time. Amy Snook and we waz! Anne Norton WRESTLING Front row. Of the state qualifers. Brad Dodds finished highest with a second place in a closely contested match for a season record of 33-1. Other Bruins who placed at state were Eric DeVenney-fifth, Matt Maurer- sixth. and Jim Hasselsixth. Highlights of the season included Dave Jack- son recording 20 strikeouts against a state qualifier. New Bloomfield, and accu- mulating a 0.8 ERA for the season. Mark Cecil set the single season stolen base record by swiping 17 bases in 18 attempts. Coach Dan Wright said that the season had its ups and downs. The team had high expectations coming into their post-sea- son play but lost in the first game at districts to Jeffer- son City, 3-1. This season was kinda like Halley ' s Comet, Coach Wright said. It came in with anticipa- tion and then just faded away. j i m -.-f -i. ' •at.- vu- ' s.- Front row; L to R Captains: Steve Whitesides. David Jackson. Mark Schlimme. They started off the season with a big splash beating McCluer North in an unexpected, but thrilling victory. With much improvement the team ' s final record was 5-8. an enormous improvement from pre vious years. Because the girls had to share the pool with Hickman, every other day the team members would rise at 5:15 for practice, but everyone agrees that it was worth the hard work. The swim team had a new coach this year. John Hamilton. With a lot of help from his wife. Linda, and assistant coaches Amy Baier and John (Jhlig. he was able to not only improve the swimming, but also raise the confidence of the girls. Several of the team members came close to qualify for the State Swimming Championships. Freshman. Becky Ceder qualified for State in the I meter diving. BOY ' S GOLF The Rock Bridge Varsity Boy ' s Golf Team finished their season with a record of 10-3-1. The Junior Varsity had a 10-4 season. One of the Varsity wins was against Hickman in the second match of the year. Sophomore, Steve Snyder, qualified for state as an individual with a score of 75 at Districts in Moberly. Russ Gaines lead Rock Bridge with the low-score match average of 40.42. The golf team is a young team with only one senior, Jeff Shilt. Jeff was injured with three weeks left in the season which unfortunately took him out of the District competition. - f :r- -it:-: ' cii..aS, : Front Row: Jason Shilt, Mark Hickcox. The whole team performed very well up to the end of the season. We had some good athletes come in this year, but we are sorry to say that we are also Iciing some good athletes as seniors. The track team ' s coach is being dragged away by the Girl ' s Swim Team. It was hard for him to do two sports this year, but he made it. The boy ' s don ' t get him next year, but we will miss you. The 1986 Girl ' s Track Team surprised everyone in their great performances and seasons. Al- though the team was young, the Lady Bruins placed third in the Conference meet and also quali- fied six people for the sectional meet. Two school records were broken this year: the 3200 m. relay consisting of Cristal Delozier, Margaret Epstein, Kristen Twaddle, and Jody Rhodes broke the old school record by seven seconds, giving them a fifth place finish at sectionals. In addition to break- ing the school triple jump record, Becki Borg fin- ished second at State competition in this event. BOYS TENNIS The boys tennis season can be summed up in one phrase . . . Nothing matters until districts. This year ' s team had five goals: beat Marshall, Jeff City. Hickman, win conference and districts. They achieved all of them in some form. The team finished with a 9-6 record. The team won the Moberly tourna- ment. Seniors Bob Jackson and Rusty Walls won titles as the team missed first place by ' 2 point. The team ' s major goal was to win districts. After some very tough and close losses during the regular season, the team wanted to peak at districts, and they did. They accumulated an amazing 26.5 team points, thus running away with the district crown. All four of the team entries made the semi-finals. The doubles team of Bob Jackson and Andy Materer, as expected, advanced to state. The surprises came from the rest of the Bruins. Rusty Walls and Marc Patterson, both unseeded, advanced to state. Tim Williams and Hunter Hoff- man making the semi-finals through a series of upsets was not predicted. The Bruins went into the State tournament content upon being there. But Jackson and Materer had other things on their minds, a state title. They played flawless tennis on the first day of competition, winning two close matches. They went into Saturday ' s semi-finals confident, but ran into stiff competition. They fell in straight sets to the eventual state champs. The team finished 7th at state. It was a very successful year. First year coach Allen Richardson should be proud, as should everyone on the team. We had some ups and downs but in the end, when it counted, at districts we played great! Congratulations to the whole team, it was incredible. By the way I ' ll never eat another doughnut again.
