From Clark snubnosing the wind, Bevier’s square crown, from domino Library and prim, gray Crafts, from NRH and Eastman beside the lethal rush, we leave communitas for academe. From nights of distrust under floodlight and badge, from Spring Weekend's baroque and manic mache', from off-key serenades in empty streets, we leave communitas for academe. We leave communitas for academe; in academe, what new communitas? Robert Koch 69 70 71 74 76 M, D, Hartman M, D, Hartman G. W. Gram 70 79 COLLEGES AND SENIORS President’s Message During the years you have been students at Rochester Institute nf Technology, you have had opportunity to ques- tion, to challenge, to analyze for yourself the greatnesses and shortcomings of the world you now enter. You may find that this new life will not be too different from that you have known as a student. There will still be the chal- lenges of new assignments and the satisfaction of complet- ing them. There will still be the excitement of new ideas and experiences. You will still know the feeling of pride that comes as you advance in your career. In short, there will be time for continued growth. The person you have become because of your experiences at R.I.T. will gradually change and develop as you are con- fronted with new situations, new ideas, new people, new responsibilities. R.I.T. is justifiably proud of its graduates. Each of their achievements reflects upon the Institute as do yours. The faculty and staff join me in extending to you congratula- tions on what you have already accomplished, and our most sincere best wishes for a career and life enriched by tradition and the promise of the future. What kind of talk is that?” Things can get fairly hectic when over 4,000 peo- ple depend on you to get them their Reporter on time. But, the staff loves it—they’ve got to, they’re newspapermen. Each week, the editors, photographers, artists, reporters, the publisher, compositors, and many others, labor at Herculean tasks to ensure that the Reporter will be on the stands each and every Fri- day—and, that it will be worth reading. “Why? This question is seldom asked. But, “Let’s do it even better next week!,” that's a slogan. O'Brien 189 Symposium Horace once said, “A picture is a poem without words.” Carlyle added, years later, ‘‘Poetry, there- fore, we will call Musical Thought Symposium, RIT's creative arts magazine, is dedicated solely to the visual and literary culture present on our own campus. The “Musical Thought” that emits from each of us, and the picture-poems created here are our material. Our finished book is a means of intimate communica- tion for anyone interested in the arts. As M. P. Moussorgsky said, “Art is not an end in itself, but a means of addressing humanity.” By uniting with the student body, the Symposium staff strives to fulfill this goal. 190 WITH News is a new but rapidly growing branch of R.I.T.’s radio station, WITR. It gathers, edits, and produces world and national news, state and local news, sports, weather information, and complete campus news cover- age for immediate broadcast to the R.LT. community. WITR News also serves as the information center during such campus activities as Frosh Daze and Spring Weekend, Staff members learn and develop techniques of “electronic journalism” as well as expanding their knowledge of one of the most immediate of news mediums. De Molay Club is a group of students who wish to con- tinue in or enter into a closely knit fellowship with common inter- ests, and who would like to share mutually profitable social activities and work projects for the benefit of each member as well as the entire student body. Activities for the year included the presentation of speakers, par- ticipation in various organizational activities on campus and in the community, as well as a bowling party and work parties throughout the school year. The informal meetings and get togethers provide a relaxed atmos- phere for developing lasting friends with a minimum amount of time spent away from the many pressures of campus life. I 192 SCM The Student Christian Movement has become known as the Protestant group which spends its time helping others while having fun doing it. Last year we started The Boswell Coffee House for RIT students. The atmosphere is that of a normal coffee house, with folk music or jazz playing almost constantly. The entertainment is either from live musical groups, or from one of the finest short film lists ever made up in this area. The SCM also sponsors retreats for our students at least one of which is a camp-out. On these retreats, issues that are pertinent to modern students are discussed. Some of the other programs that the SCM sponsors in connection with the Chaplains’ office are such things as drug conferences, the War and Peace seminar, and sex discussions. All of these are open to all RUT students. 193 Hillel Hillel is a religious, social, and cultural organiza- tion devoted to helping all the students of the Jewish faith to enjoy a rewarding college life at R.I.T. The Hillel Director, Rabbi Joseph H. Levine, and Mr. Julius Schwartz of Genessee Lodge B'nai B’rith help in an advisory capacity. Religious services, study groups, and Oneg Shabbots provide a basis for the cultural pro- gram. Social life revolves around parties and dances with other Hillel groups in the vicinity. Other events include conventions,, home hospi- tality, and bagels and lox breakfasts, Officers: Bruce Alan Hack, president: [on Roberts, vice-president; and Edith Berkov, secre- tary-treasurer are the hub of Hillel leadership. Newman Apostolate With the establishment of R.IT, as an “exempt chaplaincy by Bishop Fulton J. Sheen, the Roman Catholic community at the Institute takes on the nature of a Campus Parish, with all the facilities ordinarily connected with a well-run parish, and then some. Within the structure of the community, the Newman Aposto- late has the nature of a service organization, whose only purpose is in aiding the smooth functioning of the Parish, This it does through committees directed towards the Liturgy and Sacra- ments, the Social and Service Apostolate, the Educational and Theological Apostolate, and the maintenance of the Boswell Coffee House, which is run jointly, as an ecumenical endeavor, with the Student Christian Movement. Sister Theresa Daniel and Father Gerald Appelby serve as Chaplains to the Parish and advisors to the Apostolate, 195 IVCF Inter-Varsity Christian Fellowship, a nation-wide organization, is a group of students who indi- vidually. and collectively, seek to present Christi- anity to others on the college campus, and to promote a greater understanding of the Bible. The basic activities of IVCF are Bible studies, prayer meetings, lecture discussions on various topics of interest, as well as social activities. Periodically, retreats and Bible study courses are held at different locations in this area, There are fall, winter, and spring retreats which not only provide fellowship with the students from other colleges and universities, but also provide a time for intensive Bible studies, discussion, and lec- tures on pertinent topics. 196 ISF The International Student Fellowship was formed from an interest and a need. The foreign student was in need of information on where to go and what services were available to him. This meant having friends who could help him. The interest came from the American student who not only saw the need and wanted to help, but was also interested in learning from and understanding the foreign student. Orientation week is most important for the foreign student. It is during this week that he meets other members of the Fellowship at a special orientation program, is introduced to faculty mem- bers, and then the group’s advisor, Robert Koch. One student remarked that without this program he would never have known that other courses besides printing were open to him, or that the faculty members could be so helpful. A skating party at the R.I.T. ice rink brought a lot of laughs and bruises, since it was the first time on ice for many. Another activity that was very rewarding was a “Cook-In at Dr. Koch’s house, at which every one made or brought a sample of a native dish, for example; sukiyaki and pumpkin pie. Other activities we have had in the past are field trips to Niagara Falls, and special open parties centered around students from one country. Included were guest speakers, movies, and discussions. 197 Fnosh Council It shall be the purpose of the Freshmen Student Council to promote organization and spirit in the Freshmen Class, to train members in leadership, and to provide representa- tion of the Freshmen Class to the Student Body. The Frosh Council is an orientation program in student government. Freshmen are introduced to parliamentary procedure and the mechanics of self-government. Council officers and representatives have the opportunity, on the basis of their training, to become leaders of the Student Association. 196 Forensic Society The R1T Forensic Society, in its thirteenth year of intercollegiate debate and oratory, participated in more than twenty-five inter- collegiate tournaments and debate activities this year. Debated was the proposition—Resolved: That the Federal Government should guarantee a minimum cash income to all citizens,” The members of the Forensic Society have found the activities very beneficial to them as individuals. It has taught them how to argue logically, to study the problem thoroughly, to reach solid conclusions rapidly, and most of all, to do these in a spirit of friendly competition. The officers of the Society are: Ray Unger, president: Cynthia Kussmaul, vice-president: and Beverley Estes, secretary-treasurer. Professor Joseph E, Fitzpatrick is the advisor. 199 Decem Jani The main purpose of Decem Jani is to investigate student problems and to propose measures to correct these problems. Most of the Board's work is of long-range nature, often taking years to carry through to completion. The ten students and administrative advisors on the Board do this work in the best interest of the student. Often the students seem to picture Decem Jani as a cloak and dagger organization because all members of the Board are anonymous except the Chairman and Secretary. This anonymity is employed to ensure that the views of the Board are not influenced by constant pressure from individuals or groups. The views expressed at the meetings are. therefore, those of typical students. Membership to the Board is made by the Selection Committee after the student has shown an interest in working towards the best interests of the student body. The members who graduated last year are Ralph Atkin, Robert Hankey, Ronald Antes, Edward Lederer, and John Patterson. J. Maud, chairman; S. Whitaker, secretory 200 The Student Court, in its third year, has been the highest student disciplinary body on campus. Although a part of the R.I.T. student government, it functions independently of the Student Association, The Court has the power to assume either apellate or original jurisdiction in any case involving a member of the Student Association, It is further empowered to hear cases among or between organizations, or to refer cases not affect- ing the entire student body to the proper authority. The Court is composed of six student justices and one faculty justice; the members serve for a period of a year. The Chairman for this year was Michael Foster. The Court is an important element of the Student Council and came about through the efforts of students over a period of two years. Student Court 201 C. Bcrretta J. Eckblom M. DeSantis N, Eiscn P. Drexel G. Evans R. Duerr S. Gerhardt Student Association Under the constitution of the Student Association, the Student Council is the governing body for all students and is led this year by the Student Association President, Paul Smith, The Student Association is divided into three parts: the Student Senate, President's Cabinet, and the Student Court. The President’s Cabinet, consisting of seven directors, is presided over by the President of the Student Association, It is the responsibility of the Cabinet to perform the ad- ministrative work of the Association and to implement and enforce the legislation of the Senate. The Vice-President of the Student Association, Donald Hanson, presides over the meetings of the Senate. Each member in the Student Association is represented in Senate by a Departmental Senator, The number of Senators from each department is computed by the number of students in each department, utilizing a base Figure of one Senator per 100 students. Major organizations—W.R.H.A., I.F.C., Panhellenic Council and R.A.A.—are also represented in the Senate, The Senate controls the policies and pro- grams of the Council, and determines expenditures of the budget which is usually over seventy thousand dollars. 202 P. Members of the chess dub have an oppor- tunity to try to be on the RIT Chess Team which will be participating in the Regional Chess Tournament during the winter quarter. Other activities consist of a campus wide open tournament, and a Student-Faculty Tourna- ment held during the spring. The officers of the RIT Chess Club are: Donald Palermo, president: Robert Mericsko, vice-president; Ronald Loiaicono, secretary- treasurer: and Dr. Julian Salisnjak, advisor. 207 ARA Licensed amateur operators that are members of the ARA can talk over the air to spread the name of RIT around the world. The club operates under the call letters of K2GXT. Last summer during the Radio Amateurs Field Day, the club demonstrated its ability to provide the community with emer- gency communication for such situations as a wide spread blackout or power failure. Continuous 24 hour operation was sustained from a well equipped tent pitched near the new RIT campus picnic sight. A wire antenna system was engineered and erected around natural existing structures while all operat- ing power was obtained from a gasoline engine driven by a portable generator. Members of the student body interested in becoming Hams,” may benefit from the club s periodically scheduled morse code and radio theory classes. From these activities ARA hams learn by helping others. 20a IEEE The purpose of IEEE is to acquaint members with the developments in Electrical Engineering and other related fields. It, also, strives to maintain high technical and ethical standards among its members. The Student Branch has as its purpose the fostering of qualities needed by the engineer which are not fully cultivated in the class- room. The Branch provides an organization in which the technical developments and ideas of the student can be recognized. To fulfill its purpose, the Student Branch has a program which includes guest speakers, panel discussions, field trips, and a Student Papers Contest. In the past, we have toured such places as: WROC, the local radio and T.V. station; Brookwood, RG E's nuclear power project; and the Antique Radio Museum in Holcomb, New York. We have, also, had lectures on computers, lasers, very-low frequency propagation, etc. The year’s activities are con- cluded with the annual banquet. 209 The “AMERICAN SOCIETY OF TOOL AND MANUFACTURING ENGINEERS ’ is geared to stimulate nonacademic interest in the field of mechanical engineering. Stu- dent chapter rrl8 at RIT accomplishes this through the varied programs open to the students. These programs consist of panel discussions, lectures, and plant tours. The senior chapter in Rochester through their cooperation and guidance lend assistance in the realization of our goals. Membership entitles the student to the benefits of the “ASTME STUDENT QUARTERLY.” a magazine published by the national organization in the interest of student members; fellowship with other students outside the classroom, and other activities, including the annual steak roast in May. The exposure to a national professional organization and the demands of leader- ship in this organization is of great value to future engineers. 210 ' Computer Club The 1620 Computer Club was formed during the 1965=66 school year. Its primary purpose is to in- form interested members about the techniques of computer programming and the impact computers have made on today's civilization. Founded upon the ideals of leadership, character development, and scholarship, the sorority provides a source of life-long ties among its members, ties that last beyond the college years. The Delta Lambdas are active throughout the year within sorority and around campus. Some of this year’s highlights include Greek Week, the Greek Songfest, Spring Weekend, ‘‘Goodie Bag1' Day, as well as work in various Red Cross programs and volunteer programs at the Veteran’s Hospital at Canandaigua. 245 R Buckley S. Shirk 246 Alpha Epsilon Pi On March 5, 1965, a group of eleven students assem- bled to hold their firs! meeting of the local Rho Iota Fraternity. Rho Iota was founded upon the ideals of Brotherhood which were incorporated in the signposts of Alpha Epsilon Pi. Perserverance, honesty, mutual helpfulness, faith and humility were the ideals that these men looked up to. On November 12, 1966, Rho Iota colony received the status of a chapter from the Alpha Epsilon Pi National. Alpha Epsilon Pi offers the unity of brotherhood, friendship, and participation in the fraternity life at R.I.T, Two of AEPi's goals are the advancement of the individuality of each member, and their sense of belong- ing, We are extremely concerned with the academic achievements of our brothers and do our utmost to pro- mote the intellectual growth of our members. Aside from being active in all school and IFC events, AEPi presented the Turtles during the Spring of 1967. This event became the highlight of R.I.T.’s social calen- dar, In accordance with our social policy, AEPi pre- sented another popular Rock and Roll group during the Spring of 1968. We also held our Second Annual Home- run Derby. This past year has been one of growth. Since its founding, our Brotherhood has grown in size over 300 percent. Our physical growth, however, is not our great- est accomplishment, nor is it our goal. The growth which we recognize as our zenith is that of knowledge, devotion, and experience. This is what truly separates us from the average fraternity, and makes us a great one. 247 Phi Kappa Tau Gamma Nu Chapter of the Phi Kappa Tau Fraternity can most certainly be called an ideal chapter. Our definition of an ideal chapter being one that is first a credit to the college in which it is located, second a credit to the national fraternity, and third a credit to itself. We, the brothers of Phi Kappa Tau, take pride in all we do. We participate vigorously in campus activities and endeavors and are continually among the highest scholastically on campus. Many of the services we perform throughout the year are participation in the Red Cross Blood Drive, our annual Christmas party for the underprivileged children, and other community projects. The high- light of our social calendar is the crowning of our queen during the Sentimental Sweetheart Weekend. Our basic requirements for membership of innate worth, democratic principles, and Christian ideals are not merely stressed during pledging. They are con- tinually enhanced throughout the year, thus instilling the chapter with a close bond of brotherhood. J. Accorso [. Black E, Clymer A. Colozzo T. Davis R. Dobson V. Phi Sigma Kappa pro- vides the experience and mature leadership neces- sary to adequately Fulfill the ideals of fraternalism. Through a cooperative effort our qualified leaders encourage high scholarship and sound financial management. Phi Sigma Kappa was founded in 1873 at Massa- chusetts State College. Since then it has had rapid growth because of the sound foundation laid by its charter members. The Upsilon Tetarton chap- ter at R.I.T. came into existence in 1960 when an active brotherhood known as Phi Sigma Phi was granted a national charter in Phi Sigma Kappa. From its beginning the chapter has had a steady growth and taken its place as a leader among the fraternities at R.I.T. Phi Sigma Kappa today is the largest brotherhood on campus with active broth- ers in every major organization. Phi Sigma Kappa places scholarship first above all else. We realize that every man is at school primarily to study and every possible aid is given to brothers in regard to their study habits. We at Phi Sig strive to maintain high academic standards while retaining the social harmony that makes education a pleasure. F. Ault R. Boissonnault G, Church L. Fela A. Austin A. Boscarino K. To the college male, no other unit or organization can offer as great a means to comple- ment his educational training. For this reason the broth- ers are proud of Sigma Pi, a fine example of a college fraternity, The highlight of the year is Fall Weekend with the crowning of our Harvest Moon Queen. This social event is the culmination of much hard work by the brother- hood. We are active in all school functions and are proud to have brothers playing on the athletic teams and participating in student government at R.I.T. V. Garcia T. Gille P. Hageman I. Hagenbuck F. The brotherhood also shows strong support for the IFC programs, and our concentrated efforts in this area have won us the Volleyball Trophy, the Greek Sing Trophy, and the Softball Trophy, among others. The highlight of our year is Sweetheart Ball At this time the brotherhood bestows their trust and admiration on a very special person, their Sweet- heart. This coupled with the appearance of the smil- ing faces of the alumni promote a most memorable and enjoyable weekend. Most importantly, Theta Xi stands for individual- ity and trust in ourselves, for these are what make us the “Leaders On Campus,'' A. Alaimo If. Baert C. Baylis C. Beier D, Benz M. Bogdanowicz C. Bochenko Tau Epsilon Phi The watchword of the fraternity has been careful expansion—a blending of chapters with a common aim and purpose as embodied in the “Creed of Tau Epsilon Phi,” but never expansion for expansion’s sake alone. Epsilon Nu Chapter at RXT. is a Brotherhood whose goals are to provide group living with a well planned social life. Keeping the ideals of the fraternity in mind, service to the community has been a highlight in the past year. This has been demonstrated by Tau Epsilon Phi’s support of the March of Dimes. Tau Epsilon Phi means life; it is the hub around which one’s college life centers, the difference between lifetime friends and casual acquaintances made at school. Tau Epsilon Phi is mental; it is the undivided devo- tion that a Brother shares with the chapter. A chapter’s most valuable assets are its Brothers. Tau Epsilon Phi is pride; not only in the past, but in the future accomplishments of the individuals and the chapter as a whole. A. Bouley I. Brooks S. Cimilluca L. Cohn I- Daly R, Demuth J. Hindson STUDENT: Althea A, Richardson A Letter Without the dedicated staff with which I have worked, a publication such as TECHMILA could not have evolved into the finished product that it is. TECHMILA is the result of many long and sacrificial hours by an understaffed and often over-worked group of people. I would like to give special thanks to my im- mediate staff: Skip Blumenthal, Beth Hooghkirk, Joel Freid, Bruce Hack, and Donna Williams, without whom this book would not have been produced. To the many people who came to my rescue at deadline time—the typists, REPORTER staff, friends, and friends of friends—goes my sincere thanks. In addition, I wish to extend the gratitude of the staff and myself to our Administrative and Financial Advisor, Bob Webster, to our Photo- graphic Advisor, Brad Hindson, and to all the other faculty members who were willing to take time to listen to our problems and offer their advice. Foote Davies deserves recognition for again living up to their fine name in quality and serv- ice. I would also like to extend thanks from myself and my staff to their representative Mr. William Sloane for all the help he has given us on this book. Students of R.I.T., you have before you the combined efforts of a numerically, dedicated few. TECHMILA ’68 will be with you for many years to come; criticize it if you must, enjoy it if you will. Sincerely yours, Robert Bruce Smith Editor-in-chief Gerald L, Segelman Colophon Volume 57 of Techmila has been produced by Foote and Davies, Division of McCall Corpora- tion, Doraville, Georgia, utilizing the offset litho- graphic process.
