I lie Chemistry Department has been graduating students who are prepared lor employment in industries wholly or partially chemical in nature. Included are laboratory as sistanis. analytical chemists, technical salesmen, manufacturing chemists, research chemists, and various types ol supervisors. In September. IQt6. a cooperative course in metal Finishing was offered and is constantly in- creasing in popularity both Irom the student s and the employer s viewpoint. In addition to training personnel, the Department will offer technical service and will conduct development work lor metal finishing industries in Rochester and vicinity. I he Chemistry Department lakes pride in its ability to keep abreast ol recent developments in its field. It offers courses dealing with new optical and electrical instruments in chemical analysis and constantly adds to its courses the latest improvements and techniques as presented by the various journals of the American Cl lerni- ral Society. 22 23 24 eet icit- 7 25 m HH 1 -LI'.Cl RICAI. I lie mutual advantage oj this system to student oral employer alike is testified by the (act that half of the graduates remain with their cooperative employers alter leaving school. A recent survey ol Department graduates reveals a record ol which RI1 can hr justly proud, fwenty-seven per cent ol these graduates have gone on to do advanced study. I wo per cent of the graduates who look advanced work have become certified teachers. ! wenty-four per cent of the graduates of the Electrical Department serve in admin istrative capacities, while others hold jobs ns engineers and circuit de- signers. Smaller percentages have found employment in sales and non-technical jobs. 1 raining given in seven modern laboratories, covers the major fields ol employment—electronics, circuits, power, radio communications, tele phone, railway signals ami x-ray. Screw Machine Technology, the youngest oi the Mechanical De- partment s courses, has received much recognition in its few years ol existence. According to Supervisor Herman Martin, several men already associated with firms throughout the country are presently enrolled in this comprehensive course. I hree hundred and twenty cooperatives and a number ol special students comprise the Department s roll lor the 1948-49 school year. One full time instructor, Allan I . Bills, was added to the faculty this year. Mr. Bills, assistant to l.dward W, Goebel of the screw machine laboratory, was graduated From the Department in 1918. We are living in a mechanical age, I he men trained in tool engin- eering. metallurgy, and the intricacies of machinery will find untold opportunities in this field—a field ever in need ol trained technicians. 31 Hi rman Martin, Supervisor First Row: Robert F. I he section devoted to offset lithography had its face lifted early in the lull to accommodate a new press as well as equipment for the plate making and camera rooms. Installation of a photo-engraving laboratory for experimental and servite purposes highlighted the years expansion program, It is super- vised by Ralph B. 1 lifts, who is also a pressuoik instructor. New faculty members include R. J, Richards. David Cummings, and George Williams, offset lithography: Richard Bores ford. Mono- type: and Joseph F. Bowles, hand composition and presswork. According to Byron G. Culver, supervisor ol the Department since its origin in 1937, Publishing and Printing graduates have received excellent positions in the field of graphic ails. A recent survey shows that more than 30 different classifications ol positions have been filled by former students. 42 ■u 1A} f IIM courses designed to prepare men and women lor responsible f ¥ positions in the various fields o( retail merchandising, the Retail- ing department this year had an enrollment of 270 students. Seventy- live ol these were men, which is the largest male enrollment in the De- partment s twenty-five year history. Advertising, purchasing, interior decorating, personnel management and credit management are among the positions lor which retailing stu- dents are trained at the Institute. I he Department achieves this goal by a sound technical and liberal training lor systematic promotions, which allows the graduate to work up to key positions in both departmental and specialty stores. I he Department utilizes the cooperative plan but. unlike the other departments using this plan, keeps hnth blocks on the job during the month of December. 1 fils year students worked in forty stores in eleven different cities, an increase of five stores over last year. 10 Edwin a B, I loOAixrii:. The office of Student Publisher was created in order that a greater degree of coordination m ight be secured between editorial, business and mechanical divisions of the publica- tion. Also, more students than ever before have a hand in the paper's production, as the mechanical operations are now class projects in the Publishing and Printing Department, 1 his year the Christmas and Easter issues attracted wide attention and acc laim with I rout page scenes lithographed in color. On February 24 the stall lor the year 1949-50 was chosen from the Freshman class. In order to make the selection as democratic as possible, every student in I lie Institute was given an opportunity to compete. A Student Council ap- proved board weighed the qualifications ol those interested, and selected Harold Oarfitilde for the position of editor-in- chief and William Runyan, publisher. Sprit (Student Publication, Rochester Institute of Tech nofogy) originated in 1925 as the official Institute newspa- per. It has maintained high journalistic standards while pre- senting to the students a complete account ol school activi- ties, and is justi fiabl y one of I lie most popular ol Student Council sponsored projects. first Row. NEW YORK Members of the Graduating Class: Again, it is a pleasure to address the graduates of RIT through the TECHMILA. As president of our Alumni Association. I am most happy to congratulate you on your approaching graduation and the consummation of a definite goal. Our Alumni Association, now thirty-six years old, is a vital organization. You are cordially invited to join it and participate in its many activities. Not only is it a means of continuing friendships made during student days and of making new ones, but also of further- ing the growth and welfare of the Institute and its students. Its activities, guided by an executive council, are many and varied. One activity which is of direct student concern is the Development Fund. Your support will enable it to continue and expand as a scource of financial help to students through scholarships. It also sponsors, or helps to sponsor, projects for meeting current needs. The ALUMNI MIRROR, published three times yearly, is the official alumni magazine through which you will be kept informed of the affairs of the Institute, the ac- tivities of the Alumni Association, and items of interest regarding RIT graduates. We know you will look forward to receiving it. Each year on the evening of Convocation, a home- coming banquet is held to welcome the graduating class into the Association. We hope that you will plan to attend them in the years to come. At this time you are justifiably happy over the success you have achieved in completion of your courses of study. May this happiness and success continue throughout your lives as useful and loyal citizens. Sincerely yours, _ ---cr Edward A.
