Striving to prepare the students for better living in a dramatic world, is the main objective of the four sections of this department, namely, plain linglish, speech and dramatics, journalism, and creative writing. An important section of study in every lfnglish class IS literature. Reading units attempt to develop within the students a taste for better literature. Senior high lfnglish classes try to promote better habits in both oral and written composition, that must be practiced not only in the classroom. but throughout the entire day. The speech courses, directed by Mr. Burdette Noel- ler, develop self-conhdence and proise in the student's social relations among the student body. ocial Studies lYorld History, American llistory and social studies are the three social studies courses required in senior high. This department, headed by Mr. ,Iulius Opheim, consists of eight faculty mem- bers who help us develop a knowledge of- the past in order that we can better understand the present and prepare our- selves for the future. Not only past and present events in history are presented in the 10th and 11th grades, but in social studies 12 an approach is made to mental hygiene and problems confronting us by today's com- plex society. All of those who plan to continue in this field should find these to be excellent preparatory courses for college. 9 t to tlmst- llllt cl l'Olll'SOH Xlvliilmlvcn 1 t t lt :tt tullttttl tmlx to tht ttnttns tml -.tlttms mtl uc 1 s lm h of t t lll so slut CI Ill tx It un tht lnsnt tlttmtts mtl tpplx thtm tothtttr - x Jttlx fm' tlmste ctttts ml umm' In ttmtlnttt tn out of thtst lit-lrls in lht mttlttmttu cltputmtttt ulltts totusts Ill . nt tlttlnt mlmt 'umm-trx' :mtl tht 9lllflClllS' prolrlt-tus tm- ' N tl1t-t1's N t t ut tt tmgttl th tt NlllCltlllR 1'ct'0ix't tn up ncltng on t -.s stttntt or tt't'h- no 4 gt t str ttitm, our Ql ttltt ttts tlsu lwtttnm xxtll mttntltcl lll tht nt ttlu-tttzttics . lil 0' Miss Mabel Dickinson Physical Education lQ'sl1t'rStgtlzttl :Xtlx'ist-r- lwtc-ttlty-S114-tttllmnmtttvt 5llItlt'lll Surtttl Q fllllllllliCl Miss Oringa Elstad English II llrmw1'nm11 cltllllllllllki' Mr. Robert Garwood World History lluliiwottlilig c'tlllll1lllll'1' Stutlt-nt Snrittl l1UIlll1lllll'l MPP. 2 Miss Lyle Ellsworth English 12 l xx t-ltth t-tuult' :Xtlx lNlll' lutrulty 5-nt'1.tllmtlnttttt-v Mrs. Janet Engels Home Economics I lutvtrlty Stttttl Q tmtmtttt-tt Miss Anna Mae Gossman English 12 l'rt-tttivt' Xltiling liritlgt' flllllt .-Xtlx iwr : ' ing lttuul ul' tht- linglislt lltpt Xtt mm mats tn sllttl mt t tl lnclustrial Arts XVith its aim being vocational educa- tion, the industrial arts department has endeavored to give the students practical experience in working with metals and wood. The 1950 - 51 Rocket swimming team completed its third straight season without a defeat. The only blemish on their record was a disputed 42 - 42 tie with Austin. The team scored five dual meet victories and copped the Big Nine conference title by defeating Austin and Winona in a triangular battle. They fin- ished third in the St. Paul Winter Carnival meet and ended the season by taking an unexpected third place in the annual state meet. The splashers opened their season by topping Aus- tin 48 - 33 despite the fact that the Rocket medley team was disqualified. A week later they followed up their initial success with a 49 - 35 triumph over Winona in the Winhawk's pool. After swamping Blake acad- emy 59 - 25 on january 12, the Red and Black tankers managed to eke out a 42 - 42 deadlock with Austin. This meet was high-lighted by a dispute concerning the interpretation of the rules. In the final dual meet of the year, the finmen fashioned the upset of the season by downing a previously undefeated St. Thomas aggregation 49 - 35. In the Winter Carni- val, freshman Dick Kimball set a new diving record to lead the locals to third place. A week later the Rocket mermen tallied 46V2 points to cop the Big Nine championship for the third straight year. Co-captain Dick Williams' time of 1:54.5 in the individual medley proved to be a new Austin pool record. Eleven local swimmers qualified for the state meet and gar- nered 21 points for a third place finish. Dick Kimball became the first freshman in Minnesota swimming history to win a state title when he annexed the diving crown. . . . place 74ml In Side Meet WEETBEEP We They Austin 48 35 Xllinonzt 49 35 Blake 50 25 Austin 42 42 XVinonzt 49 35 St. Thomas 40 35 Big Nine First XYinter fl2ll'IllVill Third 4 Co-cttptnins Dick VVillinins fleftj nntl Chuck Schlotthnuer at l'm' shown on the hztekslroke Stilit' Third leg of the intlivitlnztl medley event.
