Seated, Miss Betty Wentworth and Mr. Hilbert Kathg standing, Beverly Boelter and Lavonne Schuck. 6 During his first year here, Mr. Ehrhorn has proven himself a real leader and a fine principal. His pleasing personality and sincere interest in us was soon recognized. For his cooperative and helpful attitude toward all kinds of worthwhile student activity, we are grateful. At the right are Phyllis Quam- men and Florence Drazkowski, the two office secretaries. Phyl- lis and Florence are known to all the stduents for their help- fulness and good humor. . . . Upstairs Miss Argue, as assistant principal, has loyally and capably guided us through another year. She is probably one of the very busiest persons around Rochester High School, for besides listening to our many excuses for being tardy or absent, and doing more than her share on the social committee, she is also our fair and understanding Girl's Adviser. Student Council. . . Under the able leadership of its oHicers, Charles Binger, president, Rich- ard Hendricks, vice-presidentg Marcia Kepler, treasurerg and Marilyn French, secretary, the Student Council has had an active and highly successful year. In addition, 'the council sponsored the first successful talent assembly in several years. Other activities included operation of the Lost and Found, planning of the special dances, arranging next year's assemblies, organizing noon hour ac- tivities, sponsoring charity drives, and supervising Coffman Hall. Class Officers With Stanley Folkert as president: George Bingham as vice-presidentg and Nancy Samelian as secretary- treasurer, the Senior class of 1948 completed its last year in high school with a long-to-be-remembered round of commencement activities. Prob- ably the busiest of all class officers in senior high, these students headed the Senior Breakfast committee, and other activities, worked behind the scenes on the Senior Prom, and served on Student council committees. The biggest task for the Junior Class officers this year, Darrell Cochran, president: Beverly Hexum, vice-presi- dentg and Martha Finch, sec- retary treasurer, was the well- received Junior Prom. With the Gay Nineties as a theme, this party proved the capa- bilities of the future seniors. Besides this, the officers were active members of the Stu- dent Council. The Sophomores were well represented their first year in senior high school by their three officers, Richard Giese, presidentg Jerry Nichols, vice-presidentg and Darlene Matheson, secretary-treasurer. While they had no specific class duties, the ollicers gained leadership experience from their work on the Student Council. 9 Faculty . . . Black cage club put on many a thrilling game at the well-filled arena of the Civic auditorium. Ending up the Big Nine race with a 5 - 5 record, they showed opponents the flashiest set of guards in the loop in Davey Vine and Shorty Cochrane. Among the seasonls highlights were the two hair-raisers with bitter rival Austin, the Anoka clash here, and the final win over Northfield. l 'I . Coach Merle Davey turned out a surprising '48 ice aggregation which downed the Twin Cities' best before bowing in the state tournament. The puckchasers' first test came against St. Paul Academy, with the locals racking up a surprising 5-3 win. To show they were no flash in the pan, they then downed a fast Minneapolis Central six, 2-1. The following Saturday the icemen suffered their first setback at the hands of a revengeful SPA sextet, 1-0. Next week the surprising skaters turned in a stun- ner, 6-2, against the much-vaunted North High Polars. Dale Gray and Bill Rousseau led the squad to a crushing 10-1 victory over Northfield in Region One's first hockey tournament. The Rocket grapplers racked up eight wins before dropping the finishing tiff to Austin for an .888 average. Outstand- ing in the schedule, however, was the first Rochester win over the perennially strong Cresco Iowans, which helped keep the record of 14 consecutive home mat wins intact. 4 - i v ' I Nm., V' I r ff, V S, izssisizi , ' Ms A , V ' ffl il4'5 ' W S' rri' .-.i , Y. yr fi liizzvmffi 'gi A. 43 we - W i f. ? Showing surprising power under the able tutelage of Coach Evar Silvernagle, the Rocket tankmen marked up seven wins against two losses for a 777. season average. A 49 - 17 win over Pillsbury Academy started the tankers off on the right foot, but powerful Austin invaded the following week to gain a 42 - 24 victory. Bill Reed got the only two Rocket individual Firsts, but the Schinke-Cates-Binger-Reed relay team copped top honors in the 160-yard event. The locals broke back into the win column again against Carleton College's freshmen, 45 - 21. Next victims of the Red and Black marines were the boys from Winona, who fell by 47 - 19. The Gate Citians were able to gain only one first in the contest. After Pillsbury had again felt the Rochester axe Cthis time by 58 to 171, Austin put the second blot on the record, 51 - 15. At Mankato, where the Rockets were in competition with strong teams from Fairmont, Mankato New Ulm, Madison, and Worthington, the bar-men gave a good account of themselves. An unexpected snowstorm kept the gymnasts from attending the Northwest Meet at the University of Minnesota, just at a time when Coach Bruno Beckman says his athletes were at their peak. Lind Cranston, captain of the squad, and George Bingham are the only two seniors to be lost next year. Lettermen on Beckman's squad this year were Gary Toogood, David Cutshall, James Anderson, Glenn French, Richard Brehmer and Harlowe Eppard. Noel Gray, D011 Dallmafl, Dale Hunt, Jerry Cotton, Don Benson and Dave Cutshall will be coming up to the squad next year. The gymnasts should be remembered not only for their part in the talent assembly fwhere they almost got first placej, but for their hair-raising performance between halves of basketball games where they always thrilled the crowds. Girls' Sports is a program devised for those girls who wish to participate in stimulating, after school activities. The program includes basketball, volley ball, badminton, tennis, shuflleboard, and softball. The girls come to play on Mondays,iTuesdays and Thursdays, under the very capable direction of Mabel Dickinson and Mildred McComb. The girls benefit from these sports physically and mentally and are given the opportunity to associate with other girls who are interested in the same ideals of sports- manship and clean fun.
