WE LEARN LANGUAGE SKILLS Q Q 4 Mr. Donald Smith Miss Catherine Christopher Mr. Fred Rockey Rochester's language department offered many courses to students. The department featured courses in composition and literature. It recognized and tried to fill the demand of today's world for a person who has a working knowledge of his own tongue, English, and fundamentals in a foreign language. Mr, Smith, Miss Christopher, and Mr. Rockey handled English courses. Mr. Rockey headed the journalism department, Mrs. Wilson taught Spanish. Journalism students work at mimeoscopes

HAROLD ATZ Trig students grapple with tough assignment, 4 EQIIATIONS AND SCIENTIFIC IDI Suddenly America felt a tremendous demand for more scientists and mathematicians with the launching of Russia's Sputnik in the fall, Rochestefs science and rnath departments gave students an insight into the fundamentals of these spot- lighted courses. Science courses help develop an understanding of scientific thought and methods. The mathematics courses encourage logical thinking and painstaking work, Mr. Atz instructed students in physics and biology classes. He also handled the first year algebra and geometry classes. Mr. Lanphere taught advanced algebra and trigonometry, Mrs. Wilson was the instructor of the general math class. Are the charges positive or negative?
