Whether delivering a lecture on Shakespeare or Bill Cosby's concep- tion of Noah's ark, Rochy's teachers use a fresh attitude toward learning and teaching. Expanding the three R's to many other phases of learning. the admin- istration and teachers alike strive toward making the curriculum of Rochester a curriculum of students' needs. The changes wrought by them invariably involved the interest of the student and helped to provide a new image of the teacher and his role in student life. We were the leaders of the student body. For this one year, we waited eleven. After we leave Rochester High School, we will probably forget the hardships, the grievances, and the homework. Our memory will only retain the pleasant and we will be better for it. What will we remember ten, twenty years from now? We will remember that as seniors, we participated in many things as a class. We earned money for our senior trip to Washington, D.C. by selling candy. When April arrived, how- ever, the Nation's capitol was in turmoil over the assassination of Martin Luther King, Ir. Plans to go to New York City were also cancelled for the same reasons. How can we forget this? Individually, collegebound classmates received college acceptances that secured their future for a few years at least. Others finding work more to their liking, found jobs that held security for the rest of their lives . . . or until marriage came along. Perhaps the biggest event was commencement. WE left Rochy behind and went on to bigger and more enriching exper- iences: jobs, colleges, marriage, and a family. Regardless though of what we chose and did, Rochester High School will always be in our hearts as the place that started our dreams. Yes, 1968 was our year. iw? 3,6 KAREN ALSTADT FRED ANDERSON GAYLE ANTHONY DONALD ADAMONIS JEAN ANTITOMAS MARY KAY ARMSEY DAVID ARNOLD PATRICIA BABIK WILLIAM BACON JOANN BAKER :aim 5? 3 f , 5 ,-..- I I I JOYCE BARR JANET BATHGATE RICHARD BERKIHISER RAYMOND BERRY JOHN BLOOM PAUL BOSCO ALLEN BOSWORTH CATHY BLISS WILLIAM BURTON 3 . Poised for action - Czontinuing the old Rochy traditions, the 1967-68 Rams had a winning season in spirit if not in reality. With many action-packed games such as Monaca, Ell- wood City, and Midland, Rochy's gridders never failed to present an exciting, hard-fought game to their spectators. The season came to a heartbreaking close with the tradi- tional Battle for the Oaken Bucket with rival, Beaver. Many new faces appeared among the girl gyrnnasts, including the coach, Miss Lucy Isacco. With a lot of hard work and practice, the girls made a successful effort in producing a team that Rochester could be proud of. But 1968 may prove to be a turning point for this unheralded sport at Hochy. The first signs of change appeared after the first four matches when, to the astonishment of all, the record stood at two wins and two losses. It was this reversal of previous seasons that en- couraged the boys on to success. Mr. Thomas Goett1'nan's baseball squad got off to a rather shaky start for the 1968 season but soon came through with victories. With a fine group of returning lettermen and a good crop of underclass- men, the pitching and batting was practiced night after night until a winning form was accomplished. One of the first encounters for the team was the challenge of renovating the old Noss Plan field. But with the familiar Rochy spirit the boys tackled this job with vigor, anxious for the season to begin. An exciting and eventful year filled with many activities well spells out the life of a student here at RHS. Many new clubs, such as Forensic, Iunior High Drama and Aviation, were formed. Though enjoyment was the main theme for most of these clubs. many were an extension of subjects in the curriculum. Meeting once a month during the school day. these activities provided much desired relief from the agonies of school work. A wide selection of assemblies presented throughout the year entertained us. High- lighting the year's activities were Teahouse of the August Moon, The Sound of Music, the annual ski trip to Seven Springs, and, of course, Washington, D.C. for the seniors. No matter what a student is interested in, he can usually find a club that satisfies that interest. BAND Under the able supervision of Maestros Felice and Strugalski, the band once again had an active year. Marching in numerous parades, perfecting halftime routines, and concert season were the more strenuous activities. Among the less strenuous ones were the annual hayride and banquet. In addition, various members represented Rochy at Carnegie- Mellon, Mid-West District, Regional, Westminster, and Honors Bands. Comprised of a brass choir, stage band, woodwind quintet, and a junior high marching band, the instrumentalists of Rochester can be justly proud of its big band sound. 96 BBTICI PBI'SUI'II'IEI FLUTES LOIS MOORHEAD APRIL YEAGER JUDY CRAVEN KATHY CARPENTER BETH TRUMPETER NANCY TRELLA SHERI OAKS OBOES BETSY DAVIS EDITH BAUGHMAN BASSOONS ED DAVIS RICHARD BARRETT BASS CLARINETS PEGGY HUMES DANA JOHNSON E - FLAT CLARINET JANE KEMPER ALTO SAX RICKY CORDES KATHY DAVIS BONNIE RAMSDEN VINCE GALLO TENOR SAX DAN DOHANICH BARITONE SAX KAREN COATES TROMBONES JACKIE WALTER JIM KINDELBERGER DAVE MOORHEAD BOB GRIMM GEORGE PETRIK FRENCH HORNS LINDA ROECK CHARLES MARIETTA 97 8 - FLAT CLARINET KARL SNIADY CRYSTAL FRANK LINDA HARRISON VOLYNDA MANN KATHY MOLDOVAN NANCY WHITTLE CAROL KROSKEY DEBBY DEVORE KRIS RIPPER MELISSA RAMBO JOYCE BARR KIM HALL PAM ROGERS SUE DAVIS SHERI RENZO STRING BASS TOM SHAFER WENDELL LAVETTE BARITONE DON SYSYN BETSY CRIDER GERRY PETRELLA TRUMPETS BILL OAKS SAM WALTER JIM MCCUNE CLIFF O'NEIL KRIS KNOPP KEITH HALL KAREN FARMER ED GOETTMAN TUBAS TONY AUSTIN PHIL WARD FRED YEAGER DENNIS RADVAK PERCUSSION MIKE NEELY TOM JAVENS BOB LEMMON DAVE RENNER RICK PITINI BILL PINCIOTTI WOODWIND QUINTET Lois Moorhead, flute, Betsy Davis, oboe, Charles Marietta, French horn, Ed Davis, bassoon, Karl Sni- ady, clarinet. N ewly formed, Y-teen membership consisted of ninth grade girls. These girls were very active under the sponsorship of Miss Leuhm. 'l'heir first meeting was highlighted by a hairdresser, Gretchen Hillard from Beaver. She talked to the girls on the styling of hair and applications of makeup. The next event was a swimming party: to get money for this, they sponsored a car wash at Bittner's Service Station. At Christmas, the girls held a formal at Southside Firehall, in addition to filling Christmas stockings for the children at McGuire Home. A bake sale at K-Mart provided funds for a lollipop tree to send to the Children's Ward at Rochester Hospital. One of their big projects involved dressing babydolls. Taking old babydolls from the Salvation Army, each girl made two outfits for it, then returned it to the Salvation Army for distribution. At the end of football season, Y-teens sponsored a victory dance in honor of the team. Though ninth graders, the girls contributed much to the schoo1's program and answered the question that has so long plagued the underclassmen: What can we do? Congratulations, girls! 1 13 li In U SEATED: Bob Winkle, Dave Arnold, secretary, Bill Oaks, president Frank Rambo Jim McCune. Always striving to serve their classmates and better the school, the Student Council initiated a contest between homerooms for Christmas decorations, besides decorating the school. The main project for this year was the Purchasing of benches and tables for indepen- dent study in the courtyard. The Council also served the student body by showing a full-length motion picture, cleaning the flags, and compiling and publishing a student handbook. To raise money for all these projects, the Council sold candy after school - the reason dinners were un- appetizing to some. They also arrange displays within the library to make it more attractive for the students.
