As our high school days rapidly become a part of the past, we,leave everlasting footprints in the sands of time. Reminiscing, we relive the innumerable events . . . some delightful, some unpleasant . . . that have made up the past three years in the Halls of Rochyf' Those hours of delight are destined to become cherished memoirs, while those not so pleasant gradually fade beyond recall. All these experiences combine to mold us into individuals . . . worthy citizens' of our community . . . and country. The lasting friend- ships, social, athletic, and scholastic accomplishments achieved here are nothing more or less than stepping stones to the future. In years to come, as we turn the pages of this record, we shall again see these immortal footprints as the keystone to the attainment of our goals. Or is it something more profound . . . more mystic . . . more human? ln the Halls of Rochy echo the iootialls of those gone before, while whispers of others still to come hover in the very air. Our school is not simply metal and masonry, but the embodiment of all those working and playing within its domain. As the years pass swiftly, taken up with the business and excitement of day by day living, this structure will become a symbol of all the friendships, knowledge, and sportsmanship made, learned, and practiced here. Thus we salute Rochester High School . . , our Alma Mater. Game-bound. these loyal Rochy fans ty ,rw Su .415 ROW 1: Mr. Ray Dugan, Mrs. Rebecca Bogclia, Mr. C. E. Young, Mr. Paul Scheidmantel. Board nt Education To the Board of Education, we, the Class of 1954, wish to extend our sincere appreci- ation for the many things they have done for us. During the past school year, tive new sew- ing machines were purchased for the Home Economics Department, and new desks were placed in Room 31. The halls and several rooms of the high school, as well as the auditorium, were painted and redecorated, Due to the jointure program, a larger and better equipped school building is under consideration. These are a few of the services our school board has rendered. With such a fine group of directors super- vising and planning our school, We can be assured of lasting success in the future. .-Y' iii' l A busy group of school administrators meet to dis- cuss educational problems facing Rochester Area Ioint Schools. ROBERT P. BARNER Superintendent, Rochester Ioint Area Schools We, the Seniors, have made our mark and left a lingering print upon the open page of our school's illustrious history. A large share of our success is due, undoubtedly, to the wise guidance of our distinguished leaders, Mr. Robert P. Barner, Superintendent of Schools, Mr. Fenton H. Farley, Principal, and Mr. William Peacock, Assistant Prin- cipal. Sharing with us our thrills and dis- appointments, encountered in growing up, they have been unfailing in their support and generous with their time and efforts to make our school life enjoyable as well as profitable. As the hourglass relentlessly records the passing of time, we shall, in retro- spect, once more remember and again appreciate the friendly interest and sage counsel of Mr. Barner, Mr. Farley, and Mr. Peacock. Administration I-'ENTQN H, FARLEY WILLIAM T. PEACOCK 0' P,-incipcq Assistant Principal The amiable manner found in Rochester High School is typified in our personable secretaries, Edith and Carol. A P.O.D. class listens attentively to Mr. Milnes, practice teacher. Outstanding among our memoirs will be the personalities of the faculty in Rochester High School. Not only were these teachers able instructors, but also sympathetic lis- teners, who could always find a moment to hear and discuss our problems. Willingly answering our questions, whether serious or ridiculous, they patiently endeavored to fit us with the implements necessary to becoming useful members of this great American nation. To these, our teachers . . . and friends . . . We now say humbly . . with all sincerity . .-. Thank you. as 'ffm Our present-day educational institu- tions are required to provide and main- tain able medical and custodian staffs to better the working environment of the faculty and student body. With this thought in mind, we here express gratitude to the medical staff, comprised of Dr. Thomas Hooker M.D., Dr. Oren Wallace, D.D., and Mrs, Mary Perrell, R. N., who perform a commend- able service in keeping each and every one of us in good physical and dental health. The underlying principle ot the Student Council is the knowledge that a dernocrat- ically-rnanaged student body results in a healthy educational institution. Under the guidance ot Mr. von Philp, this group super- vises the undertakings of the various organ- izations throughout Rochester High School. Student Council Ye Olde Oaken Bucket remains in Rochester for another year. Composed of representatives elected by the homeroorns and the presidents of the three classes, the Student Council has done a rnan-sized piece of work in co-ordinating the many projects found in a busy school such as ours. Many who have enjoyed this treat forget the preparations and labor that are neces- sary in providing those tasty refreshments. The Pop Kids are always at the field two hours before the game to assemble every thing, and can be found cleaning up long after the crowd leaves. impatient customers. frosty weather, insufficient working space are some of the problems faced and con- quered by these persevering salesmen. A person not familiar with editorial work can hardly conceive What a terrific amount of stress and strain goes into each volume of the Mirage. Planning the dummy, making and keeping picture appointments, writing copy, proofreading, and countless other duties are constantly demanding attention. The funds were procured by the senior class. A sale of peanut brittle and sweat- shirts, the senior class play, dances, talent night, and the work of the Pop Kids raised most of the money for the Mirage. Mere words can never convey our grati- tude to the wonderful people who helped to make our book a success. We especially want to thank our sponsor, Mrs. McMurdy, for her invaluable aid in our first venture in the tield of journalism. PICTORIAL- SENIOR DEGREES -ART STAFF SEATED: G. Frank, B. Gros- cost, M. This year, for the first time, the Iunior Red Cross is comprised of home- ec students. In co-operation with the National Red Cross Organization, our council has been beneficial to Red Cross endeavors. Its money-making venture was selling sandwiches at noon-time. With this money, party hats and favors were made for the veterans' hospitals. The council also conducted the annual Iunior Red Cross Drive and packed gift boxes for over seas. ARABELLE HACKER Cheerleaders Sincere thanks is due our energetic cheerleaders, who, at pep meetings, the football field, or the basketball court, displayed typical Rochy High get-up-and-go. By their outstanding performances, they instilled the necessary will-to- win in the student body, which in turn greatly boosted the spirit and morale of the teams. Deserving mention also, the reserve cheerleaders helped keep the reserve team peppy and alert. With five such girls to choose from next year, We are readily assured that the spirit of Rochy will remain as bright and shin- ing as ever. fN'Q' Baseball The baseball picture looks brighter this year than it has for quite some time. Coach Adam Karcis has lettermen returning to all positions except first base. The Barns finished second to Beaver last year, losing out in the last game of the season. With a few breaks we are hoping they will finish on top this spring. Rochester will compete with Beaver, Mon- aca, Hopewell, Midland and New Brighton in league play this season. ROW l: D. Chewning. The track squad enjoyed its greatest sea- son last year with tive dual-meet victories over Beaver, Midland, Coraopolis, Sewick- ley, and Ellwood City, Led by Carper, the Rams also took thiir place in the county and district meets. e team climaxed its success byNvigr'tifng the 27 inch team trophy in the Midlaigli Invitational Night Meet, the first ot its kiind in Beaiyer Copnty. ,V , . W w A great contributor to the team's success was speedy Herb Carper. Scoring 101 and 119 points respectively in his sophomore and junior years, Herb twice was a triple winner in the 100 and 220 yard dashes and the broad jump at the county and district meets. In his sophomore year he placed second in the 100 yard dash at the W.P.I.1-LL. meet and then placed iifth in the State meet. Improving with age, Herb last year placed first and third respectively in the W.P.I.A.L. cmd State meets. We believe that this resume in itself speaks for Herb's ability as an athlete.
