The club has engaged in many sports such as volleyball, soccer, swimming, basketball, and bowling, but basketball has proved to be the outstanding sport among them all and the girls have taken more interest in it. The aim of every girl in the GAA. is to receive her letter. To receive this first emblem a girl must earn titty points and one hundred for the second. TRl-Hl-Y The purpose of this club is to create, maintain, and extend throughout the school and community high standards of Christian character. During the year under the leadership of Miss Ethel Ewing and Miss Clara Ludwig this stan- dard has been kept up by folding seals for the Tuberculosis League, shining the trophies, decorating Easter eggs for the Children's Ward of the Rochester General Hospital, and reading the Bible in assembly the second semester, For social events they had a W.P.A. Party in the gym, and a Snow Ball, the Christmas Formal, at the Rochester Roller Rink. In October Mr. Traugh, the District Secretary of the Y.M.C.A. presented the club with a banner which signified that they had won first place over all the schools of the state in last year's Bible contest. THE Under the able and talented durectuon of Anthony Caputo our suxty puece band agaun sallued forth for another successful year of football games concert practuces and funally the sprung concert utself Durung football season they practuced every day and learned many unusual novelty numbers Two of these were The Pennsylvanua Polka and You Belong to My Heart followung the pattern of a huge heart There were many others some amusung and some symboluc but all were fans They also formed dufferent letters for ruval hugh school teams After the football games ended practuces were only three days a week Besudes playung at half tume when competung agaunst hugh school teams an unusual honor was bestowed upon our band thus year They were unvuted to represent Notre Dame at the annual Putt Notre Dame game held un the Putt Staduum on October 21 The band members had many qualms about marchung un front of B 54 AND so many people but the performance went off nucely Of course the occasuon called for extra practuces but ut was an experuence that wull always be remembered by each and every band member They also had the dustunctuon of tak ung second place un the Labor Day parade held un Beaver Havung only two mauorettes from last year Mr Caputo chose fuve new mauorettes and a drum major from those who trued out last sprung These proved that they were worthy of consuderable talent for twurlung theur batons and steppung lt us fortunate for us that most of them wull agaun be wuth the band next year And so another band term ends clumaxed by the sprung concert and the annual banquet As the year ends the senuors bud a sad adueu to the musuc makers who created some of our great school spurut The strauns of theur musuc wull always echo through the halls of Rochy Hugh School enjoyed by the student body and the Rochester being Selected to lead the band and Showed Color Guards: R. No job is too small or too large tor the R Club to take over with very success- ful results. Some of the club's activities consist of taking care ot the school's publicity, writing Thank You notes to our assembly speakers, preparing lunches for visiting basketball teams, sponsoring educational assembly pro- grams, taking charge of the lost and found department and various other activities which arise and must be met by willing and capable leaders Each member ot the R Club is a represen- tative of one ot the various organiza- tions inthe high school. Perhaps the most duffucult task was gettung the red pounts but after an appeal to the student body more than enough were donated Under the supervusuon of Muss Naugle these gurls worked turelessly and wuthout effort to help rause money for the Murage Every Fruday nught the gurls started from the Wood s home where the hot dogs were cooked and fuxed to sell always wullung to go sell just a few more The student body and the Murage Staff wush to thank Vurgunua s mother who loaned her kutchen for the cause and to thank Muss Naugle and the gurls who gave theur tume and effort to help make the Murage a success ' . These are only a few of the remarks one could hear at the pop stand at our home football games on Friday night. The little bit of candy that the kids were able to get was usually sold after school in the office and auditorium Though candy is still hard to get, they made up for it by selling lots of pop and ice cream. Under the capable direction of Miss Brehm, they con- tribute much to the success of all perform- ances put on at Rochy Hi, They have charge of building all the scenery for the school plays, operating the lights and the curtains and other smaller things which people do not always realize go into making a play a success, but later prove a necessity, Along with the Stage Crew come the Make- Up Staff. He was a consistent ground-gainer and did much for the success of our team with his hard-hitting, bone-crushing type of play and also with his morale-lifting talks during practice sessions.. JIM GOMORY, ll- Jimmy took a backward step early in the season. He stepped back from his last year's guard position to take up the ball-carry- ing duties of halfback. He turned out to be a hard-running, ground-gaining back this year. Jim- my made many spectacular runs of his favorite play, Special 77. DON PIERCE, I- Pierce the brains of the outfit knew what to call and when to call it. He could always be seen at his quarterback post barking out the all important signals. Nice going Dori! for a real job of field generaling. HAROLD MCELHANEY, ll-- Pop proved his worth as one of our three senior ends this year by fulfilling his duties as a Rochy wingman with the vigor and ruggedness becoming to a Rochy pigskin hawk. Pop also played defensive halfback part of the season. ELMER COLLINS, Ill- Elmer was converted from guard to tackle this year and he displayed his capability by handling his new position very well. Elmer was captain of the defense and also captain of tne calistnenics, l-iis saying, Don't cross that line, brother. That's sacred territory! was well observed by all concerned. DICK MCLAUGHLIN, I- Dick an immigrant from Wellsville, Ohio, proved valuable in his role as substitute tackle and place kicker this season. Dick say plenty of action this year and was always ready to go when called upon. BEN THOMAS, l-- Benny has proved that size, though it helps, is not a necessity when determination sets in. He is another example of that old saying, Good things come in small packages. Benny played halfback, saw plenty of action this year, and proved quite on asset to the team. Although this was his first year, he did his job with that zest and spirit so typical of a Rochy athlete. VIC RUBBO, ll- Big Vic, as he is rightfully called, was shifted from fullback to guard this season and played a brilliant game at that post. A constant threat to the enemy runners this year, he was often found in our opponents' backfield, We're sure Vic will be play- ing a bang-up game for Rochy next year. PETE NOCERA, ll- Petey, although not really a senior in school, will not be eligible to play for Rochy next year. He was another valuable end this year and will be remembered for his long runs at Ambridge and Farrell. JOHN BUSH, l-Although he was not a letterman last year John came through in grand style to hold down left end this season. John is known for his clean and spirited play. His ability to ploy was excelled only by his love for the game. Pete Nocera John Bush JOHN CARCAISE, ll- Johnny, a member of the Rams' forward wall, played a rough-and-tumble game this year. He played a consistent game at his tackle post and proved his worth by rising to the occasion at the crucial moments. ALEX FARMER, ll- Frankie drew exactly one-half the calls to start at the quarterback post. Noted for his hard blocking and tackling, Alex proved to be very valuable this season as he played a continually spirited brand of ball. John Carcaise Alex Farmer The Juniors, this year are an experienced lot and will form a good nucleus for a really gool eleven next year. They are a swell gang of fellows, but in spite of their jolly, congenial attitudes, the are never lacking the rugged aggressiveness that Rochy's footballers are so well known for. Next year they'll be seniors and will take the reins and make it their year. Jack McLaughlin Jack Swager JACK McLAUGHLlN, I- Oscar Jamison, a small but mighty guard, who obtained his mousetrap education in a very short time. He held down his position by put- ting out all the time and seemed to absorb the tradi- tional spirit of Rochy with comparative ease. Jack will perform again next year. JACK SWAGER, I- Jack played a steady game at his center post this year and Rochy is fortunate indeed to have him back next year. Capable of handling his offensive duties, he is also adept at backing up the line of defense. -73- l RICHARD DOYLE, I- Skippy, as he is most familiarly known, is a very promisingpasser. He can also run and has done quite a bit of kfqkiyg this year. What he lacks in size he makes up in spunk and tight. Johnny will be back again next year, but will be ineligible his senior year and is therefore classified as a Junior this year. 'Phe other two sophomores, Doyle and Pagley, who, along with their classmates and the up-and-coming freshmen, will form the bulk of next year's squad, have a big job cut out tor them and we wish them the best of luck. .M f Jug Moehrle Sonny Pagley JOHN MOEHRLE, l- Jughead, though only a Sopho- more, will have just one more year to play for Rochy. Jug saw plenty of action this year and should be an excellent player next season. He played a hard game in his substitute guard role and was always ready to go when called upon. VINCENT PAGLEY, l- Sonny was an the other end of some of Doyle's passes this year, two of them for T. Dfs, His ability to run under a pass should make him very valuable next year. Always playing a fine, spirited brand of ball, Sonny displayed real ability on the gridiron. FOOTBALL MANAGERS l Row l: J. Sweoringen, O. Signore, H. Q Gordner. Row 2: E, Geist, l-l. Alberts. Again we come to that branch of the football team, hypothetically known as the managing staff but otherwise known to the ordinary layman as the water boys. Their job is greater than just carrying water. They do everything from changing cleats, and lining off the field to playing nursemaid and listen- ing to the moans and sad stories of the squad in general, and Collins in particular, This year the senior manager was Eugene Ceist, and Sarge Alberts was his capable assistant being ready to cope with any emer- gency. The other managers were Mole Card- ner, a junior, who did a good job as a first year man, and the Sophomores were Jim Swearingen and Oscar Signore both of whom added greatly to the smoothness of handling the team. Few know the work put in behind the scenes to make a winning ball club, both these boys can well be proud of the way they earned their letter. CHEERLEADERS S. l-lood, E, Fisher, D. Sciyre, A. Scherer, S. Pierce, D. McCullough, N. Ferguson, l-l. Cook. Without doubt, the enthusiasm and spirit of the student body is a big factor in the suc- cess of athletics, not only tcotball but all sports. The cheering, whether it is outside or inside, helps win the game, and the cheer- leaders are those responsible for those cheers. lt is they who work up the school spirit and keep it up, and they certainly deserve -credit for their work. Two new cheerleaders were elected this year to assist the seven veterans. They were Doris McCullough and Harley Cook. The ln- dians scoring in the first second and fourth quarters knocked us out of the running for both WPIAL and county championships Although the Rams were playing their best the fleet footed backfield and the heavy fast charging line proved to be too much for our boys The Rams tried desperately to score and continued fighting up until the last minutes of the game Beaver Falls 26 Rochester l3 After losing to Aliquippa last week the Rams suffered their second defeat in a row by bowing to Beaver Falls 26 I3 The first half the Lions outplayed the Rams and scored most of their points.
