Welcome to Candylandn was an invita- tion extended to all who attended our prom. The reception was again held in the Navajo Room at the Colonial Hotel. Students learn new skills by participat- ing in different activities within the school. Outside the school the Diversified Qccupa- tions program provides students with the opportunity to gain experience through on the job training. Several Rochester business firms cooperate with the school in this pro- gram. Assembly programs, too, furnish edu- cational value as well as entertainment. Mr. Reed and Mrs. Berkebile were our com- petent advisors. The Student Council planned the Home- coming celebration, delivered Christmas baskets to local needy families, and sponsor- ed a Christmas program for the Rochester High School student body. Menus for the cafeteria and the arrangement of the recre- ational facilities also resulted from the action of the council. Although it is not an organization in- terested primarily in making money, the sponsorship of dances and the used books store, which was open in September, proved financial successes. T. Scott, assisted by M. Funk, E. Goodrich, and P. Coplen, presided over Student Council activities. ildzgc Tu emi -Fowl FIRST ROW B XanI.ue P Ball A bmxley S Smrrh SECOIND ROXX P lxern r Julnan N Musselman 5 Gerrlcl-. Increased membership, co-operation among the sponsor, Mr. Hungerford, the officers, and members of the Hi-Y Club made this possible. Under the leadership of Stan Gerrick, president, Howard Dubois, vice-president, Bob Fletcher, secretary, Joe Bayles, Treas- urer, Harry Macy, chaplain, and Mr. Hunger- ford, the 1956-57 Hi-Y club has promoted its purpose of fostering Christian fellowship in the school and community. S. was started off with a bang. The Rochester Zebras won the first five out of six beginning games and finished the season with a total of six wins and four losses. Rochester gained two new football coaches this year, Mr. Thomas Heery and Mr. Max Hungerford. Mr. Heery was the assistant coach to Mr. Heck. Mr. Max Hungerford was the Freshman football coach. For the first time in the football history of R. H. S., we defeated Plymouth, enabling us to gain possession of the Hickory Stick. Coach Heck hurriedly instructs Daniels before team takes positions. We went to Monticello hoping to grab our third Conference game, the Zebras retained a one touch-down margin when the final gun sounded. Playing before an overflowing Homecoming crowd, the Zebras put on a dazzling array of long runs and led all the way in this non-conference game. Bob Haworth, Dave Thompson, and jim Burkett, student managers, deserve credit for their efficiency during the season. In the final game five seniors saw their last action for the Zebrasg they were Stan Ger- rick, fullback and co-captain, Doug Sampsel, tackle, Phil Daulton, end, Dave Berns, cen- ter, and Dick Bauer, guard. 5fTu 0 1 Kindig sidesteps runner as teammates execute key blocks - -vr . .ox lclloxx seniori. Phil Daulton was a speedy end with determination who played a lot of hard football this year, A fine blocking and hard hitting center who came into his own this year was Dave Berns. Quitk thinking, powerful blocking, tackling. and run- ning proved instrumental in having Stan Gerrick chosen MVP and team co-captain, The strength of the R. H. S. squad was increased by the blocking and tackling of newcomer Dick Bauer. 1,3 - lpilic' FUVIX-Tlircri FRONT ROW P Onstott T Burkett Mr Heery Mr SECOND ROW T Raventroft A Krndu, D Bauer Daulton S Gerrrck THIRD ROW B Conrad W Danxels P Coplen B B Walburn S Wagoner N Patterson FOURTH ROW J Walker A Hoffman A Mrller S Shrrley 1 Carlson FIFTH ROW H Srlberman C Lasater L Wrlkes P Hayden D Cessna Zebras Break ,llnx Nappannee cheerleaders lead Rochester student body rn yell durrnr. halftrme ot the Homecomma Lame Heck D Thompson B Haworth D Berns J Brck D Sampsel B Baker D Coursey P Blacketor J Starkey J Henderson G Snyder P Thompson Brovyn T Smrrh E Fansler R McLochl1n D Ault D Schroeder N Musselman D Wrlson M Atkmson D 1936 FOOTBALL SCHEDULE Roc HFSFER HIGH Sc HOOL Teams RHS Wabash U Plymouth Vlooseheart 'VIont1cello N appance Warsaw H unnn gron Marlon T1pton Wash1ngron Clay C I C Games 4Central Ind1ana Contcrencey fPage Fort Fonrq - .. New Coach Advoca To rebuild a spirited basketball squad for the 1957 season was the outline sub- mitted by our new coach, Paul Rockwell, as the Zebras began their training. The Zebras opened with two victories at home, lost five straight on the road, split their next four games, and copped seven of their nine remaining games. The school's individual, single game scoring mark was shattered three times: twice by junior for- ward, Phil Coplen, and again by junior for- ward, Harold Howard. Coach Rockwell expressed his appreciation for these success- ful records. To celebrate the 50th Anniversary of basketball at R. H. S., the Zebras appeared in new uniforms. During the half-time of this game, several of the past basketball stars were introduced, and the freshmen team displayed basketball as it was first played. Tense moment as P. Coplen, 1.
