I OUR JUNICR ARSONISTS IN CHEM WI 'SW ffl gfrgj! KFSQOUM C953 The chemistry closs is under the supervision of Mr. Roy. Loborotory work wos bodly hindered the first semester due to the domoge resulting from the tire. However, by the second semester, o remodeled lob- orotory wos reody for the students. The students studied the elements ond their chem- icol ond physicol properties. Experiments were con- ducted in oll phoses of the course to increose the stu- dents' knowledge of the octivity of elements. The chemistry closs hos proved to be one of the most interesting in high school. LASS MIGHT HAVE STARTED THE FIRE Another interesting course is thot of physics, tought by Mr. Ronkin. The physics loborotory of our high school is very up-to- dote ond hos equipment comporoble to ony high school of the stote. The study of physics this yeor included light, heot, sound, mognetism, ond electricity. Mony experiments were conducted in thi.s course. ln oddition eoch student wos required to moke on electric motor thot would octuolly run. This spring the students were tought the procticol skills of repoiring electricol equipment, such os, toosters, flot-irons, ond motors. OUR FUTURE ARTISTS AND HOUSE The art class has had a very busy year, and the students have advanced much in various phases of art work. The students were first permitted to work indi- vidually, thus discovering preference.s and abilities. This later led to specialization. Under the capable direction of Miss Bevington, the students studied modern art and design. They used water colors, tempera, textile, and powdered paints to produce many interesting and beautiful art pieces. Still more work was done with clay, charcoal, and stencil. Each .student was required to make a booklet ex- plaining colors, their uses, and different blends and shades. An art exhibit in the spring disclosed the talent and hard work of this class. NW L v .L WIVES WILL SET THE WORLD ON FIRE The home economics classes during the school yeor were busy with both sewing ond foods courses. The tire hod olso domoged this Ioborotory, ond so these closses, too, hod to wciit until the second semester before beginning cooking ond boking. New unit kitchens hod been instolled by this time. Eoch student in eoch home economics closs wos required to sotistoctorily complete home projects-one eoch semester ond one during the summer. Miss Roohrig, the instructor, further oided the students during weekly conferences. if S li N w I X Zaye AMoNo THE FIREBUGS. H. S. Band. Mr. Wendell Frederick was welcomed by the band as director this year. The splendid work of Mr. Frederick and the band was shown through the presentation of two concerts. A mid- winter concert was given February 6, and the fourth annual spring concert was given May 12. Due to bad weather the band was confined to two marching performances this year. The first was the annual 4-H achievement parade on December 1, and on Feb- ruary 1 the band marched on the fioor at the Warsaw game. They formed the school letters and did other formations which furnished much enjoyment to the fans. The band has two quartets which added to their fame this year. The Saxophone Quartet was composed of Lois Gilger, Janice Spohn, Virginia Goss, and Rosanna Ross. The Brass Quartet was composed of Bob Rouch, Charles Kestner, Dick Beery, and Fred Baker. They played for the Senior Class play and numerous other activities throughout the year. The band oflicers for the year were as follows: Captain, Wallace Ewerg Lieuten- ant, Bob Rouch, Drum Major, Wallace Ewerg Sergeants, Kathryn Felix, Luanne Zim- merman, and Dick Beeryg Twirling Sergeant, Phyllis Shultz, Color Sergeant, Russell Heyde. The following have the ranks of Corporals: Secretary, Iolene Messmang Equipment, Gordon Hedges, Charles Rogers, and Dean Timbersg Librarians, Jean Spohn and Lois Gilgerg Uniform Custodians, Anna Neff and Rosanna Ross. There are eight band members who are graduating this year. They are as fol- lows: Dick Beery, Wallace Ewer, Kathryn Felix, Alberta Glassley, Iolene Messman, Bob Rouch, Janis Thacker, and Luanne Zimmerman. Six twirlers added much to the appearance of the band. They also added much pep to basketball games with several floor show exhibitions. The twirlers were Phyllis Shultz, Maxine Mueller, Ramona Caywood, Dora Anne Keim, Belva Burns and June Bowers. The seventy-eight members participated in athletics and de- veloped good sportsmanship with much en- thusiasm. The oflicers were: Iolene Mess- man, president, Catherine Carruthers, vice presidentg Mary Jo Sowers, secretary, and Suzanne Rankin, treasurer. The sponsor was Miss Leyman. After rough and formal initiation, a ten- nis tournament and individual bowling were held. The highest scorers were Georgia Ann Snyder, Alberta Glassley, and Anna Neff. Softball, volleyball, bowling, and basket- ball were organized in teams. The captains of the championship teams in each were Ross, Carruthers, Messman, and Sowers. , . an-us., Badminton and table tennis tournaments were played. Suzanne Rankin was the cham- pion table tennis player. To complete the season, the girls participated in tumbling and in track. Different groups of G. A. A. girls attend- ed playdays at several other schools, and the Rochester G. A. A. group were hosts to sev- eral guest schools at a Playday in April. Points were recorded this year as in pre- vious years for each sport in which a girl participated. State awards were given to three seniors, Catherine Carruthers, Iolene Messman, and Georgia Ann Snyder, who had achieved 350 points during their four years of high school. Letter awards, given for 250 points, and numeral, given for 150 points, were awarded to several seniors and under- classmen. The Rochester Zebras have completed another eventful season-a season packed with surprises and upsets. Two overtime games, at Monticello and at Plymouth, provided many thrills even though the Zebras were defeated. Other exciting games in- cluded two other home games, with Wabash and with Huntington. The Zebras were triumphant over both of these teams by the score 40-38. Only three of the boys were seniors this year, so this leaves plenty of experienced hardwood material for next year. The lads who graduated were Bob Delp, Hooke Downs, and Charlie Miller. The free throw award this year went to Downs, who made 32 out of 51 tries for 6254 per cent average. Much responsibility was placed on the shoulders of Jake Tippy, our student manager, and he deserves much praise for his excellent work of keeping basketball equipment and material in the best of condition. The student body and community wish to express their appreciation to Mr. Ray, who very capably and efficiently filled the position of coach during Mr. Lyle's leave of absence. During the season Mr. Lyle returned after two and one-half years' service in the Navy and resumed his duties as coach. Mr. Ray was appointed assistant coach.
