T reasurer bliss Wright ,,,.,,,, ..,,,,,, S ponsor SENIOR CLASS HISTORY In 1936, the senior class of '40 entered R. H. S. 103 strong. Of this num- ber fifty-nine graduated in 1940. The class organized in the autumn of its junior year, choosing Miss Rena YVright as sponsor and the following officers: John Taylor, presidentg Bob Mathias, vice-presidentg Ruth Clifford, secretaryg and Kathleen Cann, treas- urer. In the following spring the Cat O' Nine Tails was presented. This was followed shortly by the annual reception in honor of the senior class, which was held at the Colonial Hotel. In the fall of the senior year class officers were elected and the play For Pete's Sake was given. In November the class jewelry was selected. Dur- ing the winter months senior lunches were served in the home economics room. The class was entertained by the juniors at a prom May 17. The bacca- laureate services were held Sunday afternoon, May 19, in the Methodist Church. Rev. Simon delivered the sermon. As a climax of their high school career, com- mencement exercises were held at the VVhitmer Gym, May 24, with Dr. R. G. Stott as the speaker. Q Of the numerous awards won by members of this class in various activities several were outstanding. Kathleen Cann, Betty Sherrard, and Francis Eshel- n man were awarded 70 word certificates in typing. In 1939 the beginning typing team composed of Kathleen Cann, Francis Eshelman, and Imogene Baber took first place in the state contest. Kathleen Cann won second place in the state contest for individuals. She also received a 120 word pin in shorthand. Bob Mathias, the captain of our basketball team his senior year, received four bars on his basketball sweater. Dick Smith in track shattered the R. H. S. one mile record by a wide margin. Melvin Bryant won first division honors at the state and third division in the national contest in student conducting. Lucyanna Peterson received the D. A. R. good citizenship award given annu- ally to a senior girl.
