T reasurer bliss Wright ,,,.,,,, ..,,,,,, S ponsor SENIOR CLASS HISTORY In 1936, the senior class of '40 entered R. H. S. 103 strong. Of this num- ber fifty-nine graduated in 1940. The class organized in the autumn of its junior year, choosing Miss Rena YVright as sponsor and the following officers: John Taylor, presidentg Bob Mathias, vice-presidentg Ruth Clifford, secretaryg and Kathleen Cann, treas- urer. In the following spring the Cat O' Nine Tails was presented. This was followed shortly by the annual reception in honor of the senior class, which was held at the Colonial Hotel. In the fall of the senior year class officers were elected and the play For Pete's Sake was given. In November the class jewelry was selected. Dur- ing the winter months senior lunches were served in the home economics room. The class was entertained by the juniors at a prom May 17. The bacca- laureate services were held Sunday afternoon, May 19, in the Methodist Church. Rev. Simon delivered the sermon. As a climax of their high school career, com- mencement exercises were held at the VVhitmer Gym, May 24, with Dr. R. G. Stott as the speaker. Q Of the numerous awards won by members of this class in various activities several were outstanding. Kathleen Cann, Betty Sherrard, and Francis Eshel- n man were awarded 70 word certificates in typing. In 1939 the beginning typing team composed of Kathleen Cann, Francis Eshelman, and Imogene Baber took first place in the state contest. Kathleen Cann won second place in the state contest for individuals. She also received a 120 word pin in shorthand. Bob Mathias, the captain of our basketball team his senior year, received four bars on his basketball sweater. Dick Smith in track shattered the R. H. S. one mile record by a wide margin. Melvin Bryant won first division honors at the state and third division in the national contest in student conducting. Lucyanna Peterson received the D. A. R. good citizenship award given annu- ally to a senior girl. S p01ls0r JUNIOR CLASS HISTORY In the fall of 1937, 106 freshmen timidly entered the portals of Rochester High School. Only seventy-eight of this group are still carrying on the honor and tradition inherited, year by year, by the junior class. The class organized in October of their third year and chose Miss XYilda Hoopengardner as sponsor and the following juniors for class otiicers: Don Stout, president, Fred Zellers, vice-president, Margaret Gregory, treasurer: and Bob Bigler, secretary. XN'ith the three act play, You're the Doctor, the juniors made their debut into school activities. On May 22 they entertained the senior class at the annual junior-Senior Reception. On the basketball team. Stout, Zellers, Bigler, Bemenderfer, Cessna, llogue, Richards, and Slaybaugh represent the juniors. On the track team we find Sherrard, Palmer, Stout, Bigler, Bemenderfer, Richards, Brown, and Enyart. Stout, Young, Enyart, and Bowers hold honors in baseball 1 and Rich- ards, Palmer and Smiley are the juniors on the golf team. Among the school contests, Don Stout and Pat Krieghbaum represented the juniors in second year Lating joanne Miller and Kathleen Fore took part in a freshman algebra contest: Dale Smiley, Kathleen Fore, and l'at Kriegh- baum were on the commercial team at the contest in Muncie. The juniors age active in all school activities. In the Ili-Y Don Stout is vice-presidentg Bob Cessna, secretary, and Eddie Miller, treasurer. Pat Krieghbaum is vice-piesident of the Girls' Athletic League and assistant editor of Station R. H. S. Lawrence Brown takes honors as one of the yell leaders. Although taking important parts in activities, they also find time to don their horn-rimmed spectacles and keep the honor roll well supplied with juniors. Three cheers for their versatility! We admire them for their line school spirit. This was followed hy the traditional fall treasure hunt. Later in the year the eluh sponsored two dances, one at Hallowe'en and the other in january. ln the spring' came the annual spring picnic and an- other treasure hunt. Of course, the time-honored hi-weekly hean suppers were held through- out the year. The meetings were unusually good. Some of the speakers who appeared on progxams were: Rey. The program committee headed by Yir- ginia Ilelp arranged a Mothers and Daughters Tea. a Fathers and Ilaughters Banquet, and the annual breakfast for the senior members. Un every second Monday evening' the girls had a community supper. To make money the elub had bake sales and sponsored two highly sue- eessiul dances. .Xt Thanksgiving and Christmas the welfare committee under I.ueyanna I'ele: son distributed fund baskets, This practice has been followed by the tlirl Reserves for many years. There were forty-two members until the annual kid party when twenty new girls were selected. They were formally initiated in February. The September call for tennis was answered by twenty volunteers of which eight received their first ti. A. l.. points. Scheduled meets with l'lyniouth lligh resulted in ac- quiring several new friends and an R. ll. S. victory there but defeat on the local courts. Thirty-tive complimentary tickets for the Notre Dame-Southern Methodist football game made thirty-tive ti. A. l..'s happy. A cold day and a flat tire failed to dampen the spirits of those lucky ones who saw the game. Saturday, November S, our club entertained all the community high schools at the Fulton County Circus l'lay Day. Seventy-eight girls and seven teachers paraded, per- formed, danced, stunted, and feasted in the XYhitmer gym. Yolley ball was on the calendar for November. As winter came, December inaugurated King Basketball. Fridays after school saw the local enthusiasts headed for the gym. Cold ,lanuary made a skating party possible. The grade school pupils were also included in that ice party of january 10. February 23 marked the G. A. l.. dance. The style of the evening was leaping to instrumental recordings. Bowling found many cohorts, enough for several teams, two of which rolled against Plymouth. NVhen spring came, baseball was on deck. tiolf and deck tennis were popular with some girls. Including games in their various tournaments. the l,yIemen won fourteen victories and dropped de- cisions in fourteen other games. The team scored 715 points in these games to O92 for their opponents. High- lights of the season for Rochester were victories in the invitational tourney at Peru on New Yearys Day and in the seetional meet at XYIIIZLIIIZIC. Dark spots on the slate were a pair of los- ing streaks, one of six games in Ile- cemher, and one of four games in jan- uary. Graduating from this year's squad will he King, Mathias, Riley, Smith, Van Dien, and Yike. Remaining for play next year from the top fourteen players will he Bemenderfer, lligler, Richards, Cessna, Hoge, Slayhaugh, Stout, and Zellers. Bob Mathias captained the Zehras this year. Howard Hoge replaced Kla- thias as free throw shooting champ. Members of this year's freslunan team, who were used in many second team games as reserves and who start- ed in a few of these contests, included Callahan, DuBois, Hudkins, King, Krieghbaum, NYeher, Reese, Riley, Pol- lock, and Stanshury. These hoys should help to provide strong teams for Rochester in the next three years.
