A V , ' I - 13.4-if 4 I I .A ,v 14 7 ,Mi CProgre55 zn qi H S The past fifty years in R H S has certainly been an eia of progress The class oi 1930 the fiftieth senior class looks back with p11de upon the chain of progress that links the first graduating class with the present one Situated on the cornei of what is now Pontiac and Sixth Streets was the old high school where the class of 1880 completed their high school couise As wears passed and the increasing school population created the need fO1 a new building the Lincoln Building was const1ucted Our population kept pushing upwalds until in 1911, the piesent high school building was erected At first because the enrollment was comparatixely small only a small faculty was needed But as the school grew a la1 ger faculty was iequired until at the present time it contains sixteen men and women The need of mus1cal trammg resulted 1n the establishing of a music depaitment which has made rapid progless We now haxe a girls glee club an orchestra chorus classes and a high school band which every school IS proud to own Art was next introduced in the school The art classes were at the beginning small but at the present time a large number of boys and g1rls a1e developing their a1t1st1c ability 1n this studv In ordei that boys mlght make themselves useful in a trade a manual trammg department was established in 1913 and s1nce that time has been equipped with many of the most modein appliances The many pieces of furnlture which are made by boys suiely indicate that they will soon be mak1ng articles for many of the homes of the future Isnt it onlv natural for a g1rl to want to cook and sew Since home economics teachers are alwavs in demand and guls wish to become good cooks and good seamstresses a home economics depaltment was estab lished 1n the school and has since been equipped with exery modern convenience The commerclal department was introduced next Oui present com merclal department ranks xeiy high and many graduates have recelved wo1 th while positions m the commercial fields In o1der that boys and girls might be physically fit a course ln physical education was introduced Wh1Ch not only furnishes recreation fo1 boys and girls but also helps to develop their bodies At one time German was taught m the school but during the World War this subject was discontinued and biology was introduced Haung listed the departments added to the school we think it is only proper to take note of the new act1v1t1es The clubs the Girl Re serxes H1 Y Glee Club and numerous others have played an important part in mak1ng our school worth while In the athletic field basket ball was first staited in 1907 Rapid progress has followed and a new gym nasium was erected in 1922 Track and field exents came next While football IS a new event having been orgamred 1n 1925 it has made great progress and we hope that in the future w1ll keep moung upward For a numbei of years Rochester High School has been classed as a Commlssioned High School Howexer in 1929 it was changed to one of the Honor Commissioned High Schools of the state It is affiliated with Chlcago bnlvei s1ty and is a member of the North Central ASSOCIZIIOH of Schools and Colleges .
