ADMINISTPATOPS APPROVE POLICY CHANGES The l97l-72 school year will long be hailed as a year when RTHS took a step toward better educa- tion. The citizens of the community voiced their sup- port for RTHS by passing the school's tax referendum, thereby preventing further educational cutbacks. Students enioyed new freedoms, such as double lunch periods and cafeteria study halls, with a choice of studying or watching TV. ln addition to these changes, a change in the English curriculum has been planned for the 72-73 school year. In spite of the han- dicap, the staff held the price line and worked for another good book, even adding one new feature, Senior Superlativesf' Some of the other handicaps the staffers had to endure were ele- phant iokes, W. C. Fields imitations, and insults about inefficiency, but through it all the Tatler crew main- tained its sense of humor and man- aged to make nearly all the dead- lines on time. This year's show revolved around the theme Americana. Following that effort was the fall performance of Come Blow Your Horn. After Christmas, work began on the one-act contest play, The Theater of the Soul, which was awarded a first in district competition and tied for second in conference competition. Later a children's show, The Wizard of Oz, was performed in two of the local grade schools. Finally, the Thespians and Jesters combined to pre- sent Be-cket in the spring. They also put on a basket- ball game between the Harlem Diplomats and local all stars as a fund raising activity, Finally they sponsored a candy sale together with the G.A.A. Funds from the various proiects were used to buy an ice machine which is used by the athletic de- partment in treatment of iniuries. Also, in coniunction with the G.A.A., they helped to buy an equipment storage building for Helm's field. They also donated one hundred dollars to the school library. G.A.A. attended work shops, playdays, planned Halloween and caroling parties, and initiated new members. Losing the first two games of the season, the Hubs went on to win the next six straight, and tie the last game of the season. The '71 gridders wound up with an impressive 6-2-1 record, the best since 1965. Six Hub seniors, Bill Kubale, Tim O'Brien, Doug Byrd, Tom Wyatt, Terry Walker, and Bill Davey, were named to the NCIC All-Conference team. Larry West was named for special mention, and seniors Dave Peters and Don Schabacker and iuniors Don Mont- gomery, Roger Pearson, and Paul Singer were given honorable mentions. Although graduation will be taking many valu- able gridders from the squad, there are many cap- able iuniors and sophomores coming up to fill the gaps. With the help of Coach Colbert and Coach Stevens, next year's Hubs could again take the Conference. fx A , Front row: T. Koritz, J. Hintzsche, T. Engelkes, J. Loubach, C. Bigelow, E. Troho, L. REPEAT One again the Hub varsity basketball squad caused a delay in the opening of practice for spring sports as they won the DeKalb regional tournament and went on to place second in the Barrington sec- tional. Though the Hubs went into the playoffs with only a 6-T6 record Canal a 3-8 conference record, they edged both Sycamore and DeKalb in the first tourney and whipped Barrington before losing to Conant High in the sectional championship. After winning the Fenton invitational tourney to open the season, they went into a slump in which they lost nine straight, but later they came back to beat a number of teams which were considerably taller than the Hubs by using a controlled style of play. Their improvement was evident as they took six of the final eight games of the season. Standing: M. Metzger, C. Reineck, B. Davey, D. Brown, G. Nink, D. Byrd, M. Metzger, R. Van Hise. YEA I-IUBLETS Q-:wg n Q? M FRESI-IMEN, THE NEVVCOMERS On the run are the Freshmen officers Vonda McCammon, Secretary, Tom Walker, Vice Presidentg Mark Rossi, President, and Rick Reed, Treasurer. To make a freshman, mix the following in- gredients well: unlimited amount of innocence and fear of upperclassmen, a few pinches of intelligence powder fonly if desireclip sifted energy in an amount equal to the innocence and fear, 50,000 drops of Happiness Extract, and one tablespoon of vinegar. Important: your freshman will only be genuine if you remember to add several nuts and marbles. Next: boil him in oil for 14-15 years, until soft in the center. Do not overcook. Let cool, then mold into somewhat human form. Make sure he is bigger than a breadbox and smaller than a sophomore! Leave him in the sun for one day, and he'll be ready to go, End results: rather unlearned, but ambitious, person. Characteristics: plays Mad Scientist in l.P.S., works hard on Algebra I and English I, trembles in P.E., thinks Bird Cage is one of instruments in school's mythical torture chambers, spends time searching for elevator! Luckily, your freshman will have enough good humor and ambition to pull through to his sophomore year! Let's see, he said not to write in these books SCDPHS SURVIVE SECCDND YEAR Your sophomore year took a little more effort than your freshman year, didn't it? I told you it would. And I was speaking from experience, I went through it all last year, y'know. However, only you were to blame for your problems. 'Bug-ology' wasn't that hard. You iust shouIdn't have waited until the first frost came before you started on your plant and insect collections. If you'd applied your- self, you wouIdn't have done so poorly in geometry, either. I'II admit that English II might have been a little difficult, but l'II bet you learned a lot. Right? Right! Don't forget though, your sophomore year had its good points. Although you did total the new driver education car, wasn't it fun to drive with an instructor for the first time? I also noticed that you iumped at your first chance to buy a class ring. I must admit that you got a pretty cool ring, it's iust like mine. And remember, Joe Sophomore, next year you'lI be a big, cool upperclassman-just like me! Sophomore Symphony. Heading for their iunior year are sophomore class officers Mary McCarthy, president Lesa Parsley vice president, Mary Rainwater, secretary, and Lynn Hayes, treasurer. 'f li -. Y ea . Is it dead yet? JUNIORS JCDIN UPPER-CLASSMEN Junior class officers Liz Lohrmann, vice-president, Diana Oleson, secretary: Don Gruben, president, and Brian Richards, treasurer, appear bushed after a long, hard year. Remember your iunior year? Weird, green gases seeped from the chemistry room-followed, per- haps by the sounds of a minor explosion. Fierce shouts blasted their way out of the Algebra ll rooms: What? You don't have your assignment done again?! English lll classes on the third floor echoed with the scratch of pens working on compositions, as the teacher doodled away on the blackboard. If those classes weren't enough to keep you busy, there were extra-curricular activities. Working in the madhouse of concession stands was nearly as exciting as watching the game. Bratty little kids wanted you to fill their cokes to the brim, nobody ever knows the score, and at half-time all hot chocolate and hot dogs disappeared. Selling mums to finance the prom was another big iunior enterprise. You and your classmates rang doorbells and gave sales pitches till you were blue in the face. Later in the year, you helped take care of setting up the prom. Being a iunior took work and guts. But how sweet it was! Well, here goes another exciting day in English class!
