LEADERSHIP IN ACTION An examination of the accomplishments of the 1970-71 Student Council will bring to light not only its problems but also its worth and value. In the fall, the Council financed and aided Mr. Clarke with the production of Variety Revue. This talent show pro- vided an outlet for young entertainers, introduced the A.F.S. exchange student, and raised over S5600 for the A.F.S. program. In October, the Council sponsored and organized the 1970 Homecoming, making plans for the pep rally-bonfire, game entertainment, and the Homecoming dance and King and Queen coronation. Later, Student Council hosted the East Pakistan Relief Fund Dance, in conjunction with the American Red Cross. The dance provided an outlet for over-wrought semester exam takers and raised 35135 for the East Pakistan fund. Besides its rather project oriented activities, Council has provided a buffer zone between the administration and student body in contracting a Rock band for the Home- coming dance and was consulted in the decision to re-inter- pret the dress code to allow girls to wear slacks. Proposals for student lounges and open campus have been presented through the proper channels for consideration by the ad- ministration, as have suggestions for abolishing semester tests. of cr. Its sounds are those of the Art Club, now in its nineteenth year. It is a human revolution of changing ideas. A visit to the Insti- tute of Art in Chicago and a sketch- ing trip were two opportunities for members to explore new ideas. Art is the triumph and satisfac- tion of seeing a painting grow or feeling a sculpture grow under one's fingertips. It is reaching for life and holding the power of crea- tion in one's hands. This artistic revolution becomes a personal hap- pening for all who can open their eyes and feel. Everyone is - standing in front of a mirror or walking by the kids in the front hall or assuming an expression of rapt attention for a teacher's benefit while hastily scrawling a note to a friend across the room. Jesters and Thespians, how- ever, do work hard at acting. This year they spent many long hours at rehearsals working on The Miracle Worker, Teach Me How to Cry, and other one act plays including the contest play Once Upon a Play- ground. It doesn't matter whether we take on roles only after we are sure of our own identities or whether we build an identity from parts we have played. What is important is that we explore the ideas within us, ei- ther on our own or in the disci- pline of a playwright's charac- ter. Jester officers are: J. Kingsbury, vice-president, A. McAslin, secretary, M. Upah, president, J. Hanke, historian, and C. Quinn, treasurer. li First Row: N. Grant, B. Trout, D. Wyatt, K. Furman, R. Buckalew, S. Erwin, D. Wagner, N. Beck. Second Row: S. HUBS FINISH STRONG IN NCIC PLA Y Hub captains Lee Metzger J 1m Berg and Jeff Kamps review a game plan with coach Hub gridders rolled up a 3-2 conference record to finish in a tie for second place in the NCIC conference this year. The fact that the Hubs placed six players on the NCIC all- conference team indicates that they were better than their 4-4 record showed. Among those making the first team in the Southwest Uivi sion were senior captains Lee Metzger and Jeff Kamps. Other players receiving this honor were seniors Bruce Johnson, Tom Koritz, and jun- iors Bill Kubale and Larry West. Kubale and West were among just six juniors select- ed to the twenty-seven all-star team. Several Hub gridders made Honorable Mention and Special Mention in the conference also. Those making Honorable Men- tion were seniors Bill Rinehart, Jeff Kissack, Jim Winterland and Jim Berg, and juniors Terry Walker and Tim O'Brien. -Senior Earl Olson and junior Tom Wyatt earned Special Mention for their play in 1970. Many of this year's players were seniors who had both abil- ity and spirit. Though these players will be missed the gaps they leave will be filled by capa- ble sophomores. So next year's team has the potential to go un- defeated as the Hubs hit the gridiron once again for another season. Colbert Top Row: J. Kissack, J. Berg, L. Metzger, T. Carmichael, T. Jaeger, G. Milligan's performance gave Rochelle an 18th place stand- ing in the state. His only loss at Champaign was to Phil Miller of Addison Trails in the finals. Miller had earlier claimed first in section- al competition at West Leyden where Milligan managed a second place through a wrestle-back win. A few weeks earlier Milligan had won three straight bouts to gain the district crown at DeKalb. In sectional action at West Leyden the Hub junior won his first bout, a 4-0 decision over Ed Straith of West Leyden and then shut out Fremd's Jeff Alvis 5-0. In sectional semi-fi- nals Miller edged Milligan 2-1, but the Hub grappler maintained his right to a Champaign berth with an 11-2 decision over Conant's Mark Magnuson. In the opening round of the state meet Milligan scored a 10-6 decision over Tyrone Ward of Chicago Mar- shall. He went on in quarterfinal action to breeze past Rantoul's Wayne Angel 12-2. In semifinal ac- tion Milligan edged Rosco Walker of Proviso East in a 4-3 decision. In the finals Milligan led Miller 2-1 for two periods before Miller came back to take the state title with a 5-2 decision. Milligan finished the year with a sparkling 36-6 record. His 36 wins brought him a new R.T.H.S. record and the state record for most wins in a season by one wrestler. Milli- gan, along with the rest of the Hub team, was aided in a successful sea- son by the coaching of George Dyche and Pete Fader. Malcolm Milligan will be wrestling for Ro- chelle again n'ext year. Hopefully he will spark the Hubs to another successful season. f ,: Coach George Dyche congratulates Milligan after sectional match. 'xr m,Lh,A, -I NX g.....f'1 - x HUBS BOAST I 6-I -I SEASON This year's varsity wrestling squad finished their dual meet season with an outstanding 16-1-1 record, the best in the school's history. Throughout the regular season the Hubs won every tournament in which they participated. In NCIC conference action the Hubs placed only third, however, in the DeKalb district Rochelle Grapplers managed a second place finish. The Hubs finished sixth in the West'Ley- den sectionals from which the top three teams in the state later emerged. The Hub mat team went on to earn an 18th place state rating on the fine ef- fort of junior Malcolm Milligan. During the season five new R.T.H.S. records were broken. Malcolm Milligan had the most wins. in both R.T.H.S. history and that of the state with 36. Milligan also had 44 takedowns to break an old record and most team points scored in a single season with 138. Most consecu- tive wins went to Scott Brown, one of the team's tri-captains, with 31. Lee Metzger, another captain, had 20 falls to break the old record of 18. Finally, Tom McDermott accumulated the most reversals ever during one season with 39. Though much of the varsity will be graduating this year, the team still has an extremely bright outlook. Head coach George Dyche and assistant Pete Fader look forward to next season as another success- ful year for Rochelle wrestlers. if nv if 7' f W. if -'T-4 9, A . al' if 1, 1 , Varsity: Top Row: B. Near the end of the season the roundbal- lers suddenly switched to a fast break style of ball and found themselves scoring 100 points or more in three consecutive games, including a record setting 109-47 rout of Belvidere. Led by all-conference center Tom Carmichael, who set a new school record for total points in one sea- son, the Hubs won their first regional tourna- ment since 1955, beating Dixon 81-61 in the fi- nals. Playing consistently along with Carmichael this year were seniors Dave Lockridge, Jeff Kamps, Terry Van Hise, Bruce Johnson and Jeff Truckenbrod. Also, coach Gentry relied heavily upon junior Scott Sanderson throughout the year. The outlook for next year is good since this year's junior varsity squad compiled an 8-2 record. The 1971 Roto staff, working in the newly remodeled Ro-To-Hi-Life office, have suc- ceeded in producing a student publication with in- sight and identity. This year's editorial staff includes: Kathy Lohrmann, Editorials and Featuresg Marilyn Upah, News, Sue Laubach, Copy, Don Gruben, Sportsg and Terry Allen, Photography Director. The staff, under the aid of Mrs. Stotmeister and with the services of Hohenadel Printing and the staff of the Rochelle News Leader, published 15 issues of the Roto. Besides the changes initiated by the technologi- cal advantages afforded by the renovated office, the Roto changed to a whiter grade of paper, giv- ing it a much crisper finish. Readers were provided with four six-page issues, a first in providing total news coverage. With the larger staff and the newly designed photography and art department, the Roto was able to complete the news publication with greater ease than before. Dr. Melvin Smith, R.T.H.S. su- perintendent, suggested regular meetings between the administration and Roto editors. With this open and friendly exchange channel open to Roto, the staff was able to provide more insight into problems and events concerning the administra- tion, while the diversified staff enabled a well- rounded representation of student opinion and ac- tivity. Their lockers fill up With bug boxes, styrofoam, Peter Max posters and overdue library books. Their homecoming float 'fGeneseo Died, October 17, 1970 displayed ingenuity . . . that is, until the float itself died in the middle of the field during homecoming ceremonies. We are united by our endless patterns of interdependence and experiences of the infinity of smiles and tears, joys and aches, triumphs and tragedies, questions and answers thathave bound us as one, yet separate us as individuals. As we graduate, we take R.T.H.S. with us as we carry with us our own song to be sung, our own race to be run, our own stage to be played, our own discoveries to be found. If any senior has changed during his last year, at R.T.H.S., it has been Mohammed Driss Qamar, the foreign exchange student from Khenifra, Morocco, a city of 40,000 people. Mohammed Went to school in Meknes, about 120 miles from his hometown. The school has students from France, Spain, Portugal, Italy, and America, and has an enrollment of about 5000. Besides having nine subjects in school to occupy his time, Mohammed was a reporter and editor for the school newspaper. A.F.S., a school organization, whose main pur- pose is to sponsor the foreign exchange student and acquaint him with our area, held several parties for Ben and other members. In Novem- ber, a surprise birthday party was held at the Curl residence. At that party, members and guests played soccer, one of Ben's ,favorite sports. Other activities included a Christmas party and the A.F.S. national dinner. Ben stayed this year with the Robert Colville family. He is pictured with Bette, a freshman, Jim, a sophomore, and Anne, a senior. 24 WILLIAM AKEY MARK ALTENBURG VERNON AMY JAMES ANDERS JACULYN ANDREW ELIZABETH ARNE CANDY ASKELAN D HARRY AXFORD J OANNE BAILEY MARGARET BAIN GARY BAUER LANA BAYS 6 RAY BRITN ELL DEBORAH BROOKS SCOTT BROWN ELLEN CHARNOCK JANE CHISAMORE MICHALE CHUNKO RANDY CLARK TED BROWN LARRY BRYANT GARY BUCKLEY STEVEN CLARK ANNE COLVILLE JULIE COUNTRYMAN JAMES COX JAMES BEARDIN LYNN BEARROWS JAMES BECKER LORRAINE BECKER DELITHA BURCHARD GARY BYARS FLORA CAMPBELL DEBORAH BERG JAMES BERG SANDRA BERG BONNIE BONDAN RANDEL CARDOTT THOMAS CARMICHAEL JON CHARLESWORTH I2 7 KATHLEEN CROWE BRUCE CUMMINS RONALD CURATOLO CON N IE DREW GARY ELDER SHERYL ESTERDAY POLLY EWBANK RITA CURL CAROL CURTIS MYRA DAVIS WILLIAM FELKER THERESA FENWICK MARDELLE FINNESTAD STEVEN FRYE PEGGY DAVIS DONALD DEARTH BUDDY DICKEY VICKI FUNK DENISE FYKE ANNETTE GIBSON SUSAN GILLIS CRAIG DICKINSON TERRI DIENST PATRICIA DOMBO CANDACE GLEN CHARLES GOLT SHELLEY GRISHAM COLLEEN GROEN 128 'mv 'KK Vrggrr ,.7.-I ,nv I29 , 1 30 DORIS GRONAU CARL GUSTAFSON RONALD HALL RHONDA HANSEN WILLIAM HUBBARD PATRICIA HUTSON JAMES ISLEY MARY HANSON NANCY HARDY CHARLES HARE NANCY HARROLLE TODD JAEGER BRENDA JARRETT DEBRA JENKINS BARRY HAVENS RHONDA HAYS RONALD HEAL JEAN HELMS BRENT JOHNSON BRUCE JOHNSON PEGGY JOHNSON JEAN HIGHLAND CLAY HILL DONNA HILLIARD LARRY HINZE REID JOHN SON RICHARD JOHNSON ROBERT JOHNSON STEVE JOHNSON WENDY JOHNSON JEFFREY KAMPS SCOTT KOONTZ THOMAS KORITZ ROGER KRAHENBUHL JAMES KRIEGER DAVID KAPRAUN KEVIN KASMAR KATHY KEMP STEVEN LAKANEN STEPHEN LANG MICHAEL LARSEN REBECCA LARSON .L i 'f 'hr :Um f ...---'sv any wiv--m fi!
