Striving to produce a quality yearbook, the 1970 Tatler staff displayed fine organization and individu- ality under their new advisor, Miss Mayes. This year's staff, headed by the editorial board, worked together cooperatively to produce the largest Tatler that R. T. H. S. has ever had. Each page represents acom- bination of longhours, hard work, planning, and a lot of fun. Sizing pictures, cropping, producing layouts, typing, and meeting deadlines were all part of the staffs effort to produce a successful Taller. P010 OEWNQ ,W .r NEW LOOKJ' In September of 1960, Rochelle Township High School saw one of the most dramatic changes in the history of the student publication in nearly thirty-five years' the Ro-To-Hi-Lzfk had a new look. A large, five-column page, set with bigger, easier- to-read type and new headline sizes was made possible by going from letterpress printing to offset. Editors who executed the change were Missy Marks, features and editorialsg Sharon Polancic, newsg and Kathy Lohrmann, copy. john Masters was later added as assistant editor for sports. Part of the Ro-To'.t new look was a result of exten- sive picture coverage. Since Terry Allen was taking pictures for the Newt-Leader, the R0-To-Hi-LW bene- ' fun! 'ata These paper dolls sure are Busy Editors at Work fired by using his prints. Headlines also constituted a major change in the Ro-Tok appearance. Mr. George O'Brien, mechanical superintendent of the local paper, assisted by setting the headlines for the school paper, thus expanding the type possibilities. How did the staff and advisor feel about these changes? Mrs. Stotmeister, the R0-To advisor, stated, We think this is going to work out well for us. As soon as the novelty wears off, we should be able to settle down to getting effective coverage through pictures and copy. it lu- , 13.4 .4 1 .Ty at ei . lx A ,W., 3 ..., . . . ' V A lr . J .. . STUDENT COUNCIL LEADS STUDENT BODY Each year Student Council is faced with the enor- mous task of trying to fulfill its goals: to promote the general welfare of the school, to help solve school problems, and to provide the forum for student ex- ptessionf' And at the end of the year, every Council member has that feeling that the Council did not ac- complish these goals. This year's Council, trying to carefully reach these goals, began their activities with an all-school project - Organizations Day. Here students were 'given a chance to become involved in various clubs and orga- nizations of the school and to become acquainted with the people with whom they were going to be living for the next nine months. Homecoming brought great happiness to many students, for it was the first time in thirteen years that a bonfire was permitted. As the Homecoming festivi- ties ended Saturday night after a three-day program, it was felt that Homecoming '69 was the best one held over the years. Variety Revue, which helped to finance the A. F. S. exchange program, was another successful project, for it involved a great many students. These students benefited from their hard work, for they realized that in order to have communication among students, they had to become involved with other students. Eight Council members, along with Mr. Vanden- berg, made an extremely worthwhile trip to Sycamore to attend the annual Northwest District Convention. Through the Convention, Council learned why it is important to have goals and search for a way to attain these goals. The most important project that Student Council promoted this year was the elimination of the grade requirement for all students wishing to become Council members. The Council realized that in order to have complete representation, students of varying qualities, academically as well as socially, should be a part of the group suggesting projects to benefit all students. S., jesters presented their first production, Hedda Gabler, as the Senior Class play. Also in the fall, the cast for the Contest One Act Play, Genefif, was chosen. Drawing talent from all classes, the One Act cast was one of the largest to trav- el for R. T. H. S. A new activity was undertaken this year as four thespians directed members of -Iesters in three one-act plays. This was established in order to give more ex- perienced students the opportunity to direct those less experienced in play production. Producing plays was not the only activity jesters was involved in. Twice this year they traveled to Chicago to see two stage plays in order to see sets, makeup, and acting from the professional standpoint. Later in the year, jesters presented the play, Barqfoot in the Park, a comedy about the trials and tribulations of young married life. . To lead them in their many activities, jesters chose Laurie Hanke, president, Beck McQuillin, Vice- president, Kris Handel, secretary, Becky Schabacker, treasurer, Alice McCaslin, points chairman, Kim Bostwick, historian, and Marilyn Upah, parliamentar- ian. Working closely with Jesters, the International Thespian Society, whose purpose is to advance dra- matic arts in secondary schools, started out the year with eight members. However, with two initiation ceremonies during the year, their members increased. The Thespian. officers this year were Becky McQuillin, president, Scott Koontz, vice-president, Laurie Hanke, secretary, and Marilyn Upah, treasurer. Thespian initiation is a liltle rough, and the in- itiates act accordingly. Jester officers take a minute to relax from ule. this year's busy sched- xh- wang, in ,' . Following in their footsteps next year will be junior jeff Truckenbrod and' sophomores Marvin Metzger, Doug Hummel, and Terry Allen. i Now who could have taken my whistle? This yea r's Frosh-Soph , , squad. The Frosh-Soph squad, composed of Peter Spring- mire, Dick Upah, and Dave Friestad, frequently ran against teams with twice as many runners as they. Since all of these boys are freshmen, next year's Frosh-Soph team should be more experienced than this year's. The seniors always stick together at practice. 4 1 1 ,U Fruit of the Loom? Rochelle's statistics in many of the games equaled or even surpassed those of its op- ponents. Leading the defense was jerry Lepperd, who re- ceived honorable mention for the all-state team.jerry also received the Hackett Trophy award. Dick Loef- gren, who received the Ellis Trophy award, should also be recognized for his outstanding sportsmanship. Many of the other players received honorable men- tion for the all-conference team. Several of these players are iuniorsg thus, there is a ray of sunshine for the future. With many of the players returning next year, we can be assured of a fine season. Most of the time the starting lineup consisted of three seniors and two juniors, giving the third year men the experience they will need next year. Coach Gentry also substituted in other juniors freely, increasing the chances for an excellent squad next year. But all the credit canit go to the juniors, as the seniors used the experience they had to carry the team through a good season. The co-captains for this year's squad were Barry Haigh and Scott Anderson, both regulars in the starting lineup. R. T. H. S. grapplers finished their season far ahead of squads of previous years in both duals and tourna- ment play. Under the leadership and qualified eye of Coach George Dyche, the varsity squad managed to Hnish in the top three places of every tournament it participated in up to the district. Outstanding wrestlers of the varsity squad were Jerome Getter, a senior, finishing with a 30-2 record, and Scott Brown, a junior, finishing with a 29-5 rec- ord. Jerome Getter, Scott Brown, and Mark Stech- schulte were all co-captains for this year's squad. Mark .ss-Q-wf-- BH was injured toward the end of the season and was therefore unable to add further to his long list of vic- tories. Junior varsity this year was coached by Joel Col- bert. Many promising wrestlers from this squad will soon have the opportunity to fill the few vacancies left by seniors. We predict that next year's squad will prove to be a powerful competitive machine bringing the wrestling name to Rochelle as no other previous squad has done. TOP ROW: Mr. Dyche Qcoachj, S. Are you sure it fits the play? Hamlet: By all means. Actually it is the whole theme of the play - to be a success, or not to be. QUASTIOJUNIO 'IZXK-E THE LEAD N' IZIF-LQ. The great class of '71 started a profitable year by electing our officers to guide us. Rhonda Hays was chosen president, Darrell Quinn, vice-president, Debbie jenkins, secretary, and Nancy Hardy, treasur- er. To lead us in our cheers at athletic events, we chose Emma Male, Lois Ranken, and Debbie Troha. Peggy Bain, Rita Curl, Sheryl Esterday, Susan Gil- lis, Debbie jenkins, and Wendy johnson provided colorful half-time entertainment at the football and basketball games as members of the Pom-Pon Squad. In the fall we all had fun working in the concession stand at football games. Soon after football season started, Mr. Guio, our class advisor, began helping us make arrangements for our mum sales. Our sales were so successful that we were able to break all previous mum sales, records. The money that we earned from the concession stand and the mum sales was used to finance the Junior-Senior Prom held in the spring. Before Homecoming, thejunior Class boys select- ed three candidates for junior Attendant to the Homecoming queenj These candidates were Ronda Hansen, Debbie jenkins, and Debbie Osborne. Deb- bie Osborne was chosen as the attendant. As a result of all our activities and responsibilities this year, we feel confident to assume the role of sen- ior leaders in 1971. My friend and I were just talking about all our memories of our freshman year at Rochelle Township High School. The first day was kind of scary, but it got to be fun when we learned our way around and got in the swing of things. Meeting all those new kids was fun, too. Not too long after school started, cheerleading tryouts were held, and three freshman girls were cho- sen for the fresh-soph cheerleading squad. They were Sherri Larsen, Debbie Wagner, and Diane Metzger. Then a couple of weeks later, the freshman boys selected three candidates and voted for one of them to sewe as Freshman Attendant to the Homecoming queen. The three candidates were Jan Vance, Debbie Wagner, and Nancy Beck. Everyone had to wait until the Homecoming dance to find out that Jan was the lucky winner. When elections rolled around, four freshmen were elected officers, and twelve were elected for Stu- dent Council. In the class of '73, Bill Wilkinson was chosen as president, Missy Alongi, vice-president, Sharon Furman, secretary, and Norma Curl, treasurer, The twelve Student Council positions were filled by Missy Alongi, Susan Brucker, Norma Curl, Scott Erwin, Sharon Furman, Marla Kubale, Sherri Larson, Brian Richards, Mary Snyder, Dick Upah, Bill Wilk- inson, and Nicki Wine. On Friday or Saturday nights, we joined the cheering section at the football and basketball games. Sometimes there was even a dance afterwards. Being a freshman sure was fun. I'm glad there are three more years ahead! Don't you agree? - Nicki Wine Class officers: Norma Curl, treasurer, Sharon Furman secretary, Missy Alongi, vice- president Bill Wilkinson, president. The Hubs did have a tough year, winning only five and losing eleven, but next year should be one to look forward to since the team will have experience. jeff Truckenbrod ended the season in fifth position on the squad and was high point man with a 9 wins and 7 losses record. The j.V. squad, coached by Mr. Maaske had one senior on it, Al Erikson. Mr. Romes said, If Al had been out his junior year in high school he would have made the varsity this year.
