I4 Post Qbumg 7-5 Qeaww This year our Hub Harriers paced their way to a 7-5 season in duel meets and third in the conference meet. Curt Charnock, captain for the Harriers, set two rec- ords on his way to earning a place in the State Cham- pionship. The first record was at Polo with the time 9:51 and the other at LaSalle-Peru with the time of 9:42. Curt also finished third in the District meet and, for the second year in a row, won the High Points Trophy. Coach Mully deserves a fine hand for the time and effort he spent with his winning team. Next year Coach Mully feels that he will also have a strong win- ning team with the help of five returning lettermen. E. Rockford. . . . . . The j.V. team had a 3-6 season. YOUMQ l-lubS Gam ' ieffff The Hub gridders, under new direction this year, had a relatively poor season with a 1-8-0 mark. Al- though this was the case, the squad did have the ad- vantage of preparing several Sophomore boys for the Varsity ball team next year. A good number ofjun- iors have also gained much experience and should be ready for a good, tough season. All in all, the Fight- ing Hubs are looking forward to getting out of the losing slump next year. Paul Gilbert was named the most valuable player. It is a fast game that de- mands even faster reactions from the team members. For success, one needs deep concentration. One can see the senior team members contemplating a free throw. Secondly, one needs to get offa fast shot. And, when the situation arises, one must out jump his ad- versary. Sometimes, one must literally bring down the house. Many times a rapid rebound is the answer. Then, one needs a quick follow through to get the ball away from the crowd. When a player has the right speed, he wins. And when he doesnlt, he doesn't. When he becomes exceedingly fast, you get noticed. John Gibson's ability got him elected to the holiday tournament all-star team and the all- conference team. He had the key to victory! You see, Dave. it's all in the wrists. I How are all my little friends in Tallerville, and did you sell lots of Tallerr this fall?,' Yes Tallerman, we sold over 700 subscriptions? Did you work your hardest to make your year- book the best ever? Yes Tallerman, our la outs were better, our copy more precise, and the individual pictures that were brand new this year turned out to be a really great ad- dition. A lot of our success was due to our atient ad- visor, Mrs. Gibson, our co-editors-in-chiellijohn Pe- terson and Marilyn Male, activities editor, Brenda Browndervilleg sports editor, Fred Cederholmg orga- nizations editor, Jane Schafer, classes editors, jo Ann Carmichael and Judy Groves, faculty editor, Marie Henkelf, Yes, villagers, I have noticed your hardworking editors, good work, but you must not forget the novi- ces on your staff who really shaped up with a little in- struction. Right, Tallerman. They learned how much work a yearbook really is. They learned to distin uish be- tween good and bad photos and good and gad co y. The year got of to a slow start with only the sports section having a full staff. The news, feature, an edi- torial sections were built u with recruits from Mrs. Stotmeister's Sophomore Elfiglish Classes. Mrs. Stot- meister was quoted as saying, I think these sopho- mores contributed a great deal to this yearls R0-To, and I hope they will continue to work with the staff for two more yearsf, Feature writers Gay Prewett and Melissa Marks added originality and color to the feature and editori- al page. I ' I Each section editor was encouraged to designate a young assistant editor. jim Zack served as assistant s orts editor, Melissa Marks, assistant editorial and eature editor, Sharon Polancic, assistant news editor, Steve Haas, assistant copy editor. Karen Kunde served as assistant to the Student Council Publicity Director. Space is too limited to give full credit to everyone who helped make the R0-To a readable paper this ear, commented Mrs. Stotrneister. However, Ro- 0-Hi-LW appreciated the help it received from conscientious club publicists and from teachers and administrators who helped make our job easierf, rg f..- t. ssl non! They presented Stardurt as their fall play and An 01!67p7'di56d Season as their contest play. All jesting aside, the jester's organization has its serious side. Its officers this year were jan Coleman, who headed the group as president, Renae Turner, vice-president: Jan Hicks, secretary, Bob Entwistle, treasurer, and Sally Sawicki, points chairman. Their first activity was a dance following a football game in November called Jester Jag, Part Ilf' In january all paid members made a trip to Chicago to see The Man of La Manchu. Those jesters having earned sufficient points saw the production Marne in the spring. THESPIANS jesters who had earned 55 points were eligible to become a member of Thespians. Their initiation was held in the spring. Their officers this year were: Renae Turner, presi- dent: Jan Coleman, vice-president, ,Ian Hicks, secre- tary, and Bob Entwistle, treasurer, and Sally Sawicki, points chairman. The Thespians had fifteen members this year. The members who were seniors worked on the senior play. Let's hope that Bob will survive to remain a mem- ber of Thespians. This year's officers are: S. The year's activities would aim at raising the necessary 31000.00 for the school-to-school project. The first project of the new school year was Orga- nizations' Day, Each organization set up a display in the Bird Cage' for the student body to view that night. There was also a dance in the north parking lot. Next, the Council staged its annual Variety Revue and donated the proceeds to the A.F.S. Program. The Revue, In A Fururislic Fashion, centered around the song-and-dance troupe which performed three num- bers to set the theme. The third major project was the Homecoming ' -mr-1ubolyACfw5 Dance. Its theme, Homecoming ,67 Is A Happening With The Hubs,', created a psychedelic air for the Sat- urday night dance and coronation. In December, the Council sponsored a Christmas collection to help raise money for the foreign school project. A plaque and candy were presented to the class with the highest per capita average QMr. Spring- mire's first hour electricity classj. The Friday following semester finals brought the next fete - a Build-a-Schoolv dance. The proceeds were used on the P.C. school project. This past year was a success according to Miss Utz, French Clubls advisor. The officers were elected in October. Ann Moore was elected president: Mary Hovis, vice-president: Valerie Patzner, secretary and Cindy Horton, treasurer. Two new features were added to French Club this year. One of them was that in order for a member to appear in the French Club picture in the Taller, he had to attend at least two-thirds of the meetings. The other feature was that a program committee was de- veloped to help the officers plan interesting meetings. Priscilla Olson was elected chairman of the commit- tee. The committee invited a guest speaker to show slides of France: it also sponsored a bake sale. The money earned from the bake sale, together with the dues of the thirt -one members, financed the outing that French Club took in the spring. j ,Fmnce . TOP ROW: Carmichael, N. Lockridge, Y. Not knowing where to go for their classes, they were as- sisted by members of the Student Council who point- ed the way. Most freshmen memorized their schedule so they could face their first day of high school with enthusiasm, rather than with apprehension. As the complex puzzle of high school fell into place, the Freshies,' found that they had certain responsibilities, as well as privileges. Among their responsibilities was the election of class leaders, They installed Dan Lowenberg, president, Lois Sturm, vice-president, Debby Osborn, secretary, and jackie Andrew, treasurer. They also found it necessary to choose twelve of their classmates to represent them in Student Council. Those elected were Joanne Bailey, Lorraine Becker, jane Chisamore, Rita Curl, Teresa Fenwick, Kevin Kasmar, Buddy Kieninger, Scott Koontz, Charlaine Maris, Lois Rankin, Bonnie Row- ley, and Marylin Upah. 84 Now organized, the Freshmen settled down to having fun. The excitement of football games, cheer- leading tryouts, and joining clubs varied the routine. Many Freshmen boys went out for football in the hopes of becoming future Hubs. Two Freshmen girls, Emma Male, and Rhonda Hansen were chosen to cheer the Hublets', to a vic- torious year. Others busied themselves by making signs for Pep Club so they, too, could support their team. The first big event of the year was Homecoming. In the Homecoming 10072 Attendance Contest, 3396 of the class turned out. However, there seemed to be speculation as to the intentions of the Freshmen boys who attended. The question was: did they come to watch the Hubs play Princeton, or did they come to watch the three Freshman cuties, Rhonda Hansen, Debby Osborn, and Debbie jenkins ride around the field during presentation of candidates? The next night, they found that Debbie jenkins had been cho- sen the Freshman Favorite? Everywhere I go I see students walking around with 7O on their sweatshirts. These students must think that's a great year or something - maybe that they're the greatest upper- underclassmenf' After a thorough investigation I have discovered that these stu- dents feel that the class of 1970 ir the best. I can't see why, but per- haps itis because the Sophomores chose these leaders: Jerome Getter, presidentg Missy Marks, vice-presidentg Dorie Andes, secretaryg Bev Hunger, treasurer, I wonder if that could be the only reason for the Sophs' feelings. Perhaps the Sophomores' greatness has something to do with asking their favorite girl to Homecoming, Twirp, Frosh-Soph dance, or any of the other many fine activities sponsored by clubs and organizations of R,T.H.S., or maybe the election of Tina Alongi, Bob Burke, Ron Engelkes, Bill Kroll, Karen Kunde, Chuck Malone, Val Patzner, Brenda Shields, Bill Shook, Stacey Smith, Penny Springmire, and Vicki Wine to represent the Sophomore Class in Student Council is the reason. I still have a hunch that there is more behind the Sophs' idea. I've got it! I've got it! It's the girls! There are Debby Nyberg, Vickie Betts, and Ellen Kettleson who cheer the Sophomore football and basketball players to victory and arouse enthusiasm in the entire school. Also there are girls who were selected as Sophomore Attend- ant candidates: Debbie Broom, Sandy Boltman, and Debby Nyberg. Even though Sandy Boltman received the final honor, the other girls were privileged to have been nominated. Maybe the selection of their class rings makes them special. How- ever, I think I've finally fallen upon the real answer, It is not just the class officers, or just the Student Council members, or just the cheer- leaders, or just the Homecoming attendant, or just the fact that 54W of the Sophomore Class attended Homecoming, but it is the com- bination ofall Sophomore groups and activities that make the class of 1970 the greatest and who will be the greatest under- upperclassmenf' Sophomore class officers line up for second year activities. Elected were Dorrie Andes Csecretaryj, Missy Marks Qvice-presidentj. Bev Bunger Qtreasurerj erome Getter Qpresidentj, and Mr. Yenerich fadvisorj. That's the junior officers: Jim Zack, president, Jane Schafer, vice-president, Brenda Brownder- ville, secretary, andjanice Hicks, treasurer, leading their classmates in enthusiasm. Keep going! Don't stop now! That's the grearijunior advisor, Mr. Guio, urging his proteges to higher goals, In case you missed the point of the picture and headline above, the officers are forming a megaphone with Mr, Guio as an essential part, the handle, When mum sales didn't rise as expected, Mr. Guio in- stilled a lot of enthusiasm in everyone so thejunior Class could make money, And did they make money! Around forty Juniors canvassed Rochelle and surrounding areas selling mums, still others held down the fort at the football concession stand. And what was all this money for? Right, the prom. The prom was probably the most memorable event thejuniors or- ganized. After working hard all year to earn money and spending hours in thought and preparation, they saw the gymnasium trans- formed into a ballroom fairylancl. Of course, junior year is not all work. Pep assemblies, football games, basketball games, and other athletic events are important functions forjuniors. Heading these events werejunior cheerleaders: Sheryl Alcock, Vickie Koontz, and jean Luxton. Also promoting spirit at Homecoming were homecoming attendant candidates: jan- ice Hicks, Gayle Hummel, and Carolyn Meador, of which Gayle was chosen. juniors also attend dances, walk the square, study U.S, History, and participate in student government. This is evidenced by the people representing the junior Class on Student Council: Sheryl Alcock, Mike Alongi, Jo Ann Carmichael, Dwight Davidson, Bob En- twhistle, Judy Groves, Vickie Koontz, john Kyler, jean Luxton, Car- olyn Meador, jerry Phipps, and Phil Scherer. So it's Rah, Rah! for the-juniors. Rah! for the junior officers, and three Rahs! for Mr. Guio because none before have been so fine as this great class of ,69! Jwiww Poww! RTHS means EXPERIENCE - not only academically, but socially. RTHS means UNDERSTANDING. Before one can make a success of himsell he must understand himself and the people around him. Here, we have been given the opportunity to analyze ourselves and make some of our decisions. RTHS means SELF-DISCIPLINE. We have earned every grade or honor we have received. We have decided for ourselves what ideals are most important and just how much effort we should exert to gain them. RTHS means TOLERANCE. We have been given the opportunity to analyze other people and their opinions. Likewise, we have learned that each one believes in his own opinion, however different from ours. We have learned open-mindedness, an essential quality in living in this world of extreme viewpoints. RTHS means INVOLVEMENT. We have discovered that in order to become successful in life, we must become involved. No one who stands on the sidelines or participates once in awhile will taste the sweetness of self-satisfaction. To become a true individual, we will have to find where our future lies, and then put whole selves into de- veloping the life we desire. RTHS means FULFILLMENT. Here, we have begun to satisfy our need to be individuals. RTHS means FRIENDSHIP. All of us will leave RTHS with our friends, some of whom will continue their educationg others will not. Many of these friendships will last a lifetime. RTHS means HAPPY MEMORIES - of days we took all those tests or played those tough games - of days we sold mums or worked on prom - of days we thought would never pass but seem to have flown by. As graduation nears, we, the class of 1968, wish to express our thanks to you, RTHS, for the start you have given us. We have shown our appreciation by molding our lives with the assets you have be- queathed us. We hope that our children also will benefit from the Ene legacy that we have received, Thank you, RTHS! We must leave now, but we will remember you always. - jan Coleman Qfwcis wiflvEutl1u5i05vw Gary A. Ackland Kenneth Adamski Linda Allen Kathleen M. Anning Barbara R. Arnc Judith M, Ame Kathy A. They stand for Character, Service, Leadership, and Scholarship. Together, these traits help form strong young men and women who, in most peoples, opinion, will be able to bear the problems of life and come out on top. The shining torch on the emblem pin of the N.H.S. signifies that these young individuals also carry with them the radi- ant light of knowledge. On May 14, 1968, the Rochelle Township High School Chapter 1452003 ofthe National Honor Socie- ty initiated eighteen new members into the society. The new members - thirteen seniors and five juniors - were chosen by a faculty committee and the admin- istration. The seniors were chosen from the top UW: of their class, while the juniors were chosen from the top YZ: with emphasis on an exceptional academic achievement for the juniors. The ceremony was con- ducted at the Scholastic Honors Program by the eight senior members of the National Honor Society who were elected to the society during their junior year. - Tom Lepperd Mary E. The frosh-soph also broke some school records. Randy Salsbury broke the two mile record with his 11:28.6 run. In the 120 yard low hurdles, John Man- ning broke the school record with a 14.3. During the season the Freshman team achieved a first place in a LaSalle-Peru invitational. Also at a tri- angular meet in Rochelle, the Freshmen beat both DeKalb schools. Bill Cole, number six, a senior, is the only mem- ber not returning. Since the top five courtrnen are juniors, they will be returning next year.
