DEI We must work together today in order that we may enjoy the benefits of a demo- cratic society tomorrow. JOHN P. MANNING PRIXICII3 L X' W. G. HUTSON It is a splendid commentary on the youth of America that they continue in the path of useful living at a time when the adult world seems lost in confusion. Their concern is for exams, annuals, athletics, and social life rather than war, hate, and destruction of the social order. This annual represents a co- operative undertaking which is the very essence of democracy. It is completed in the face of obstacles which make it even more worth while and I wish to express my sincere admiration for those who have had a part in the work. CULTY rg? J JOB R. ANDREWS H S. N N , An historic picture--Here are part of the hundreds of automobiles that were parked in Robstown on the afternoon of November 21. 10,000 people were in Robstown for the game. The stadium was dedicated to Robert Driscoll of the great Driscoll Ranch who labored always for the develop- ment of South Texas. When this townsite was founded about 1906 on part of the famous Driscoll Pasture it was called after the name by which he was affectionately known: it 1 1 was Rob's Town. C237 Back Back A E d Starting the season with a 14 to 12 victory over the Temple Wildcats, who later went to the state finals ln the Interscholastic League race, the Robstown Cotton Pickers began a grid campaign which carried them high into the dis- trict play of conference IGAA. The Kerrville Antlers eked out a 6-0 win in the second Robstown start as the boys from the hill country really put on the steam in their own back yard to take this low scoring tilt. The Cotton Pickers make it a practice not to socre under thirty points a game in the next five frays as they ran over Freer, 75-03 Vic- toria, 41-Og Corpus Christi Acad my, 40-Og Bee- ville, 34-73 and Xingsvllle, 39-0. The last two triumphs were conference en- counters and with these two tussles under their belt, the Cotton Pickers faced their tradition- al foe, the Corpus Christi Buccaneers, in the show-down of the north zone of district l6AA. After leading throughout the first quarter by 7-0, the Cotton Pickers were repulsed in the second half as the Bucs struck through the air for two touchdowns and downed a lucxless Robs- town crew 14-7 in the last game of the season. lay Zapalac C261 Guard X E'.. 5a F K 11 .qw 'f ' J x VL .P use f f A ,, John L. NRockyn Rundel1's last Cotton Pi quintet became the third club which has occupied the District 26 A throne room two tim as his boys swept through the conference schedule while dropping but two games. ' Dropped by a surprisingly strong Corpus Christi Buccaneer team in their first con ference fray, the Pickers had to come back and take every remaining conference game to gain at least a tie in the south zone race. Rallying gallantly, the wearers of the Re and lhite struck back and smashed Beeville and Kingsville twice and downed Corpus Chri in a return engagement which netted them the south zone title and the right to meet Ar sas Pass, the north zone titlist, in.a championship series. The Pickers' troubles had just started, however, as the Robstown boys eked out a to 28 triumph, thanks to Fred Jacob's last seconds free throws which proved the margin victories for the Idckers. The Panthers struck back in the second contest to defeat t Pickers 22 to 18 and tie up the series at one game all. In the deciding game the Robs town lads had to come from under a 12 to 5 first quarter deficit to take the champions 41 to 30. It was, however, against the fate of the Pickers to advance further in the Inters lastic League race as a last minute rally against the Bloomington Bobcats, fell short the Bobcats squeezed out a 23 to 22 win to advance to the finals in the Regional meet eventually gain the regional title. 1. 4. ,xx ov W .L f ,,X. f P -as ', H M-S 4 Q , rj, VL ' ww, :W r,.,.,.N t ,.,, - , 'La.s2,xfST , FRED JACOB Center T LUIS LBAL Forward i 5 'LS 1 xx gs, . . Just the other day they told me that Miss Hattie could never teach again, that h days were short. NThen,H I said, Nthis once I will try to pen some fitting tribute f her community before it is too late...to say those grateful words from the heart befc the one to whom they are directed has passed on. There should be flowers for the liv But I delayed just one week, and it was too late. Today I realize that if we have flowers. we can still give them to the living. Miss Hattie lives on, in our community still, in the lives of the hundreds she helper build. She didn't need words of praise. The little, rumpled bouquet a shy child br: to her desk...the warm hand-clasp of some strapping young fellow whom she taught yea1 ago, now bringing his own tot to her room...those were reward enough for Miss Hattie. That dear soul builded her own monument, more lasting than granite. Quietly she sued her work, day in and day out, in Robstown for 28 years. A sprightly little figl seldom seen outside her class-room and her home...who could have guessed what she bui through those years? Dainty college girls...somet1mes cocksure, sometimes deft, sometimes bewildered, came and taught their year or five years, married and left: Miss Hattie loved them I helped them, smiled and taught on. The little trusting boys and girls who hung on her words, who loved her stories learned their letters under her sure guidance: they yelled,N'Bye, Miss Hatt1e!n at end of the year, and rushed on up the ladder to football and pepsquads, college, and marriage, and success. Maybe it seemed they forgot the quaint little lady away back in the first grade, but she's there in their hearts, the one who first took them whe left their mothers' side. She started them up the road, with a pat on the shoulder, haps a rap on the head, with wise counsel and a merry word. Why, there must be a th by now who got their start under Miss Hattie Martin. To those then, her pupils and the grateful parents, the school, too, and all in Miss Hatt1e's spirit lives, must go our words. She said when she closed her text and laid it by, NI only hope I've done my dut Her duty! Well, you who knew her, if she's done her duty, her work must carry on. And we have need of that spirit in the days that are ahead of us. Roy L. Swift HILDR GF GFFICIALS' FAMILIE milton LDYUHL , my 51,2 , xi 3 El ya 5. ' .
