USS ROBISON QDDG-125, built by De- foe Shipbuilding Company, was commis- sioned in Boston on December 9, 1961 and joined the Pacific Fleet in March, 1962. ROB- ISON is named after Admiral Samuel Shel- burne Robison, whose varied career included combat action in Manila Bay, experimental work in telegraphy and telephone, the Su- perintendent of the Naval Academy, and a tour as Commander-in-Chief, U.S. Pacific Fleet. ROBISON is the eleventh of the DDG-2 class guided missile destroyers to be built. She carries the supersonic TARTAR homing missile capable of destroying high speed air- craft before they become a threat to the ship. For close-in and anti-aircraft engagements, the ship is equipped with two 5-inch 54 dual purpose guns with far greater range and ac- curacy than World War II guns. To deal with the Submarine threat, ROBISON carries ASROC rocket delivered torpedoes, giving her the ability to engage submarines outside of their lethal torpedo range. For close-in submarine work, she has two three-tube tor- pedo launchers. 5 ROBISON has made 17 extended deploy- ments to the Western Pacific and Indian Oceans including providing gunfire sup- port for U.S. and South Vietnamese forces and in combat situations against the enemy all along the Vietnamese coastline during the Vietnam War. ROBISON has also fired in excess of 16,000 rounds in more than 100 strike attacks against North Vietnamese targets during the conflict. In more recent deployments, ROBISON in the spring of 1983 participated in the largest fleet opera- tion in the Northern Pacific since WWII and escorted USS NEW JERSEY QBB-621 f rom the Western Pacific to Central Amer- ica for contingency operations ' V mer of 1983. ROBISON a highly successful and ployment with the USS CCVN-701 battle group in the and the Arabian Sea. n ROBISON is currently d1SPl8y five departmental a cellence.
