SHIP'S HISTORY USS ROBISON QDDG-121, built by Defoe Shipbuilding Company, was commissioned in Boston on December 9, 1961 and joined the Pacific Fleet in March, 1962. ROBISON is named after Admiral Samuel Shelburne Robison, whose varied career included combat action in Manila Bay, experimental work in telegraphy and tele- phone, the Superintendent of the Naval Academy, and a tour as Commander-in-Chief, U.S. Pacific Fleet. ROBISON was the eleventh of the DDG-2 class guided missile destroyers to be built. She carries the supersonic TARTAR homing missile capable of destroying high speed aircraft before they become a threat to the ship. For close-in and anti-aircraft engage- ments, the ship is equipped with two 5-inch 54 dual purpose guns with far greater range and accuracy than World War ll guns. To deal with the Submarine threat, ROBISON carries ASROC rocket delivered torpedoes, giving her the ability to engage submarines outside of their lethal torpedo range. For close-in submarine work, she has two three-tube torpedo launchers. ROBlSON has made 16 extended deployments to the Western Pacific and Indian Oceans including providing gunfire support for U.S. and South Vietnamese forces in combat situations against the enemy all along the Vietnamese coastline during the Vietnam War ROBISON has also fired in excess of 16,000 rounds in more than 100 strike attacks against North Vietnamese targets during the con- flict. ln more recent deployments, ROBISON in the spring of 1983 participated in the largest fleet operation in the Northern Pacific since WWll and escorted USS NEW JERSEY CBB-621 from the Western Pacific to Central America for contingency operations in the summer of 1983. ROBISON recently completed a highly suc- cessful deployment with the USS CARL VINSON CCVN-701 battle group in the lndian Ocean and the Arabian Sea. ROBISON is currently authorized to display five departmental awards for excellence. These are the Damage Control DC , the Communication the Missile the Gunnery and the Electronic Warfare NEW . The officers and men of ROBISON daily live up to her motto: HUNDAUNTED, UNSURPASSEDY'
