ROBISON is named aftgr J ' 1 S uel Shelburne Robison, whose varied career inclu Admira am I ed combat action in Manila Bay, experimental work in Silegfaphfl' and telephone, the Superintendency of the.NaVal A021 GIHY, an a tour as Commander-in-Chief, U.S. Pacific Fleet. ' - 'd d issile ROBISON is the eleventh of the DDG 2 class gui e m d t rs to be built. She carries the supersonic TARTAR hom- es roye ing missile capable of destroying high speed aircraft before they become a threat to the ship. For close-in and anti-aircraft engage- ments two 5-inch 54 dual purpose guns similar to those carried by a World War II destroyer are carried but with greater range and accuracy. To deal with the Submarine threat ROBISON ' ' ' ' ' h th abilit carries ASROC, rocket delivered torpedo, giving er e y to engage submarines outside of their lethal torpedo range. For close-in submarine work she has two three-tube torpedo laun- chers. ROBISON has made 14 extended deployments to the Far East, including providing gunfire support for U.S. and South Vi- etnamese forces and in combat situations against the enemy all along the Vietnamese coastline. ROBISON also fired in excess ol' 16,000 rounds in more than 100 strike attacks against North Vietnamese targets during the conflict. ln more recent deploy- ments. ROBISON in the spring of 1983 participated in the larg- est fleet operation in the Northern Pacific since WWII and escor- ted USS NEW JERSEY QBB-625 from the Western Pacific to Central America for contingency operations in the summer of 1983. ROBISON completed a highly successful tour to the Per- sian Gulf in 1985, where she functioned for over 80 days as the Anti-Air Warfare Commander for U.S. forces in that volatile area. On the occasion of ROB-ISON's 25th Anniversary of comissioned service the ship once again is deployed in support of national in- terest in the Persian Gulf area. We are the crew of ROBISON and together work to be ready always to perform any assigned mission. Without us ROBISON is just a lifeless machine. With us she becomes a warship of enor- mous power and capability, available to defend and protect our country and its interests throughout the world. Our ship is no bet- ter than the quality of work and level of skill we give her. We dedi- cate ourselves to this ship to fulfill the trust and the responsibility t.hat has been given to us. May we always continue to set the standard of excellence and be prepared to respond to any chal- lenge when it arises. .. ' . 'M- Fron the Captain: It is a significant part of the Navy's mission to maintain a presence in the volatile areas of the world. The Persian Gulf is ' t e crew an excellent example. When a ship does go overseas, 1 comes together like no other time. They are mission ready. They are a fighting team. They have to be. It was like that for ROBISON during this deployment. The significance of our time together, away from home, family and loved ones, is caught in the pages of this book so that we can all look back and remember the best of times. But don't be fooled. Just as the mysteries of Davey Jones' locker will forever be untold to those who never visit King Neptune's realm, so too pictures and words can't begin to tell the story of USS ROBISON's forward deployment during her Silver Anniversary year of commissioned service. n They don't tell you about a crew that pulled it all together to deploy two months early with only'six weeks notice. Nor do they describe the strong feelings of pride the American families in Saudi Arabia gave generosity and strong appreciation for our you a feeling for how really hot it was in they convey the emotions stirred by voices and patriotism that the crew by their warm presence. Nor give the firerooms. Nor do of the crew gathered on deck under the stars singing Christmas carols and thinking of loved ones far removed. lor do they portray the anticipation of the many, slimy pollywogs who were to meet face to face with King Neptune, nor their elation for having survived the rites of ' initiation into the brotherhood of Shellbacks. Nor the sense of fulfillment in finally reaching the long awaited and oft promised shores of Australia. You can't put these feelings on paperg but they are there. Strong feelings. Good feelings. That's what makes ROBISON so special. Maybe the pictures can't tell youg but as the Captain of this fine ship, I can! llowhere would you find a better, more professional crew. A crew of fun loving, hard working, dedicated men who met the challenges of the Persian Gulf head on and came home safely. h ' And for that we are both proud and grateful. J. B.
