Commanding Officer CDR Dana P. French, Jr. Commander Dana P. French enlisted in the Navy in June 1955, he attended recruit training and the Naval Academy Preparatory School at Bainbridge, Maryland. He attended, graduated, and received his commission from the U. S. Naval Academy in June 1961. He then served tours on the USS COONTZ KDLG-91 as the 1st Lieutenant, the USS WHIPPOORWILL fMSO-2072 as the Execu- tive Officer, and the USS KOKA IATA-1852 as the Commanding Officer. He then became Aide and Flag Lieutenant to Commander, Western Sea Frontier, after which he was ordered to Command River Assault, Division 112 in the Delta Region of South Vietnam. During this tour of duty he received the Purple Heart and two Bronze Star Medals With the Combat V , After his return from Vietnam, he Was assigned as the Weapons Officer onboard USS LEAH Y IDLG-162. In 1971 he attended and graduated from the Armed Forces Staff College, and then served aboard USS COCHRANE IDDG-122 as the Executive Officer. Commander French then attended Naval Postgraduate School, from Where he graduated with a Masters of Science Degree in Personnel Management. He was then ordered to the Bureau of Na val Personnel in the Human Resource Management Division. In December of 1978, Commander French accepted command of USS ROBISON IDDG-122.
