We On the morning of April 5, the USS RANGER collided with the tanker FORTUNE off of Singapore. The collision took place as the task group was preparing to enter the straits of Malacca, in transit to the indian Ocean. Both vessels suffered considerable damage. ROBISON was in station 2000 yards astern of the RANGER, and immediately following the collision was ordered to close the stricken tanker and render any necessary assistance. After a long day spent in the tankers oil , . slick, ROBISON was detached to continue her transit to the Indian Ocean. A quick firehose wash- down by USS ELLIOT CDD-967, - helped remove most of the oil from ROBISON, however, it would be several months until the oilg which coated the ship from water line to masts, was comple- tely washed and scrubbed away. The picture above, showing the damage suffered by the FORTUNE, gives a good idea of the force of the collision.
