2 ommanc ing O kggp ,,,,-f- '-'wk Commander Jefferson was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota, on May l, l925. Following graduation from high school he attended Marion Military Institute at Marion, Alabama, and then went to the Naval Academy, graduating in the class of l948A. Following graduation Commander Jefferson was ordered to the U,S,S, OZBOURN QDD-8465 as assistant gunnery officer. For the next six years he remained at sea serving in the U.S.S. BUCK QDD-7615, U,S,S. IRWIN EDD-7495, and the U.S.S. GENERAL ANDER- ON QTAP-lllj. Orders to Fleet Training Group, San Diego, brought Commander Jefferson ashore. In l956 he was ordered back to sea as Fire Control officer of the U,S,S, F,D. ROOSE- VELT QCVA-42j. One year later he was selected to attend the Naval War College. This was followed by a tour of duty in the Fleet Operations Office of the Chief of Naval Operations. In l959 he returned to sea duty as Commanding Officer and then Executive Officer of the U.S.S. BAUSELL S-DD-8455 and then as Commanding Officer oft eU,S,S, BAUER CDE-10255. On August l0, 1963, he assumed command of U,S,S, ROBISON QDDG- l2j having relieved Commander D. V, Cox, In the early years after WWII Comman- der Jefferson served in China and Japan. He participated in the Korean conflict. In l962 he received the Secretary of the Navy Achieve- ment Award for the development of a visual projection system called TIPS. Commander Jefferson is married to the former Sylvia M, Rutledge of San Diego, California, They have two children, Gregory and Karen.
