Coach Lloyd-football coach Hank Johnston-husky football player Sally Bishop-energetic reporter The Junior Class Play was presented on April 14, 1950 in the high school auditorium, under the direction of Miss Lillian Pogachnick. The play was entitled The Brainstorm, a com- edy in three acts. The story concerns itself with a meek, shy freshman named Willoughby Adams. His friends in college make him do all their work. He does their homework, makes their beds, and even lets them wear his clothes. His conscience, however, can't stand much more of this so he comes out in the character of Inner Willy who causes a bit of commotion by appearing in long underwear. Being transparent to everyone but Willoughby, this presents a very complicating situation. WiIIoughby's three aunts arrive sud- denly and bring along his extremely dull girl- friend, Marybell whose only pastime is sleep- ing. The college girls keep trying to persuade Willoughby to play football, but he is very much against it. Sally, a reporter from the school paper, interviews him but he still thinks it's too dangerous. The three aunts are attempting a match between Marybelle and Willoughby. He iust hasn't the courage to tell his aunts this. His real interest is in Sally. With the help of Inner Willy, he begins to speak his own mind, much to the surprise of his aunts and college friends. The college girls finally per- suade him to play football and be the captain of the team. His aunts do admit he makes a strik- ing appearance in the uniform even though they don't approve of the game. Surprisingly enough, with the encouragement of Inner Willy, Willough- by tells his aunts that he doesn't cdre to be en- gaged at this time to Marybelle, who of course doesn't care one way or another, because she's too tired. Everyone leaves Willoughby, puzzled by his strange action. Inner Willy decides he has done his job very well and disappears behind the sofa. Anna Phillips 33 HIGH SCHOOL BAND 'So filet' Scws' One of the nicest things connected with any high school is the band, and our band here at Robinson is no exception. They have provided the utmost in entertain- ment for the students whether their tastes were jazz, popular, or classical. The members of the band have worked very hard and deserve a great deal of credit. During the summer they marched in parades for differ- ent occasions. They won quite a few prizes for their appearance, marching, and their playing Mr. Picchi has done a wonderful job of con- ducting. He is not only patient with the band members, but is well qualified because of his knowledge and background of music. The band has given spring concerts every year and have always brought a large audience to each performance because they have pre- sented a variety of music that pleased everyone, playing everything from Band Jive to Oper- atic Mingle with ease of style and wonderful timing. We are extremely proud of the band for the entertainment it has provided for every assem- bly and pep meeting. Not only do they play well as a group, but there are quite a few in the band who could hold their own as soloists. The majorettes, too, are important in the band. ln their gold and white uniforms they strut down the field with batons twirling, leading the band. At half time, too, they always put on a nice performance. Something we shall never forget about high school is the band performing at a football game. First there's the roll of the drums and then the band marches down the field. In their colorful black and gold uniforms, with the gold plumes waving in the crisp autumn wind, it is no won- der that so much spirit is displayed at the games. Surely a band such as ours is one of which we can be iustly proud. 34 AND MAJORETTES MAJORETTES Head Mujoretie-Doroihy Dean Senior Band Members Left to Right- Shirley Dolinar Mildred Hundloviich Chiurinu Sicher Doroihy Dean Dixie Davis Barbara Story CHORUS The Seniors have always taken great interest in all activities and chorus is no exception For quite a while at Robinson the chorus was merely a group in which the girls took part the boys had little or no interest But in the last 'Few years, under the direction of Mr Picchu the boys have also participated and have proved that they too have wonderful voices Somehow Christmas would not be Christmas without the chorus singing traditional carols at the assembly program and doing a wonderful lab The chorus has lolned with the band each year in presenting the sprung con cert and has helped to make them a great success singing sacred numbers ballads and novelty tunes which everyone enloys. The new pianist for the chorus this year was Anna Phillips who deserves credit for a iob well done. ' I I r - 1 1 I I 1 I I ' 1 THE DRAMA CLUB The Drama Club has certainly become a well organized group at Robmson Under the super vision of Mrs Foster they have presented plays for different occasions and have done it like real troupers In this club they have learned the fun damentals of acting such as phrasing of words has helped them overcome that 'terrible disease of he theatre known as stage fright Not only have the drama students partlcl pated in many programs but sometimes sewed the costumes themselves This year they picked the best male and fe male p rformers of the Qemor and Junior class plays They were not only drama students as you can se but critics as well A more aualufied director for the drama club could not have been found We refer of course to Mrs Foster who has been connected with the theatre for many years and knows perhaps all stages of the drama and staging The students have always listened with interest to her many wonderful experiences of her theatre days Mrs Foster certainly deserves a lot of praise not only for her wonderful directing and patience but for her gracnousness at all times breath control, and good timing. As in all May Festivals a queen is crowned and forthe last nine years a king was included as well. This charming couple is chosen from the Senior Class by their fellow classmates. Attendants for the May Court are chosen by the Senior, Junior, Sophomore, and Freshmen classes. Each year the court is honored by the performance of dances by the girls of diFFerent classes. As a custom of former years, the Senior girls dressed in pastel colored gowns and pre- sented the traditional May Pole Dance. The Robinson High cheer- leaders are full of pep and energy that has en- tertained us at all the games and pep rallies. When they are not cheering, they are making up cheers and new routines. They have bol- stered the morale of the players by their spirit and enthusiasm even when we were losing. Mr. Birko is a graduate of Indiana University and is catcher for the Dormont Baseball League. Mr. Rus- so graduated from Carth- age College and won the Witt Memorial Trophy as the outstanding basketball player in his senior year COACHES Their job at Robinson is the first for both of them and they are doing a won- derful iob. Besides their coaching duties, Mr. Birko teaches physical education, health, civics and spelling. Mr. Russo teaches physical education and English. E. 53 FOOTBALL The Rambler's 1950 football season was rather disappointing for all who attended the games. The team was greatly handicapped by having only two regulars back from last year's team, therefore, the first string was composed of nine inexperienced players. Offensively, we had a fair backfield and a spirited line that was physically fit for the games, but lacked experience. The Black and Gold gridders came through with the winning of two games, tying one, and losing six. In spite of the losing season the Ramblers had a steady stream of team spirit which enabled them to uphold their many defeats. The summary of the games are as follows. CECIL Robinson was defeated by Cecil at Canons- burg Stadium in the opening game of the season. At half-time the score was 7-6, Robinson, with Zelenko making the touchdown and Boff convert- ing the extra point. But Cecil scored twice in the second half, the winning touchdown coming in the third quarter with a pass. Robinson played a hard, clean football game but was onthe short end ofa 13-7 score. WEST ALLEGHENY The first home game was played against West Allegheny which is classified as a class A school, Robinson held their own in the first half, HIGHLIGHTS with the score 0-0. The wall fell in the second half when Robinson's hard fighting line could not stop them. West Allegheny scored three touch- downs to defeat Robinson 20-O. BENTLEYVILLE We won our first football game of the sea- son in a night engagement with Bentleyville by the score of I5-6. At half-time Bentleyville was leading 6-0, but in the second half Robinson broke loose and scored two touchdowns and a safety. Sam Mahoney scored the first touchdown from the two-yard line after a hard drive down field and Boff succeeded in kicking the extra point. Harry Postufka scored the second touch- down but Boff blocked a punt with Wolfe recov- ering near the Bentleyville goal and Bentleyville held them fthe Ramblerslp but a bad pass from center behind the end zone enabled the Ramblers to get a safety and to win the game by T5-6. HICKORY Robinson won their first home night football game by defeating Hickory 7-6. Hickory scored in the first quarter but failed to complete the extra point. Then in the second quarter a pass from Mahoney to Brinkley, with Brinkley sprint- ing 25 yards, gave Robinson their touchdown. The extra point by Boff was good. This put the Ramblers ahead by the score of 7-6. No other gains were made by either team in the third and fourth quarters and the game ended with Hickory bowing to Robinson 7-6. FOOTBALL HIGHLIGHTS VERONA The game started with Verona receiving the kick-off and not gaining much yardage. ln the first quarter Robinson had the ball on Verona's one yard line but a fumble caused them to lose it. Verona came back and scored a touchdown and converted the extra point. Then in the sec- ond quarter Verona again scored on a fumble, making the score 14-0 at the half. In the second half Robinson came to life with Zelenko scoring two touchdowns but missed making one extra point, thus making the score 14-13. In the last minute of play Heasley scored, but the touch- down was called back because of a penalty. With thirty seconds left to play Bot? missed his attempt for a field goal and the score ended 14-13 in favor of Verona. MCDONALD Robinson traveled to McDonald for a night game which ended in a 20-20 deadlock. McDon- ald scored first but Robinson struck back with two touchdowns which put Robinson ahead 14-6 at half time. In the 3rd quarter the opposition again scored but again Robinson quickly came back with a touchdown by Mahoney, but Bot? failed to boot the extra point. In the closing minutes of the 4th quarter McDonald again scored and made the conversion to have the final score read 20-20. AVALON Avalon played host to Robinson in the Ram- bler's final game of the season. In the early part of the game Robinson marched 40 yards up the field but the drive was halted by an intercepted pass. The rest of the 1st half was a one-sided affair with Avalon outplaying the Ramblers and scoring two touchdowns. Avalon again scored early in the 3rd quarter and the Ramblers finally came to life in the 4th quarter by scoring a touchdown. The game end- ed with Avalon on top 19-6. NEVILLE Robinson lost a close decision to Neville 7-6 at the opponent's field. The Ramblers started of? on the wrong foot by fumbling on their own 18 yard line. Neville capitalized on this fumble by scoring a touchdown and kicking the extra point. The Ramblers got the ball on a fumble by Neville in the 3rd quarter and Mahoney went over on a quarterback sneak but we failed to make the conversion which proved to be the margin of vic- tory. ' ' CLASS HISTORY SEPTEMBER 'I945 lt was the day after Labor Day un the fall of T945 when we strutted proudly across the road and entered the Junuor Hugh School as seventh graders occupyung the seats un Muss McCurdys and Mr Punturerus rooms As our class spon sors they helped us plan a Valentune Party whuch proved to be a great success for those who at tended ln order to remember all the happen ungs of each week we posted a weekly news bulletun and at the end of the year we gathered together all the umportant events and made them unto a small booklet whuch we proudly called our yearbook SEPTEMBER 1946 ln 1946 as eughth graders we were placed un the rooms of 81 and 82 under the supervusuon of Mr Wrenshall and Mr Synowka Our bug prolect for thus year was to have a banquet We earned money by sellung seeds and candy wuth Mrs Wulluams un charge of these money makung prolects March 7 1947 us one date that we shall never forget for ut was the nught of our first dance namely The Shamrock Specual The last actuvuty of our eughth grade year was our banquet held at the Unuted Presbyteruan Church of Moon Run SEPTEMBER T947 At last we were Freshmen but thus year we were separated for Muss Pagachnucks 97 class was stull un the hugh school and Mr Synowkas 9' class was stull un the Junuor Hugh Thus year was hughlughted by two well remembered actuvu tues The first was a Halloween Party held un Deemer s barn un October T947 The second was an assembly program whuch uncluded a play composed by the students entutled School Days SEPTEMBER T948 In 1948 we entered Robunson Hugh School as Sophomores under the leadershup of Muss Scavaruel and Muss Leedy In thus year our class mates louned dufferent clubs and partucupated un many actuvutues and before we knew ut the term had ended SEPTEMBER 1949 September 1949 brought us to school under the tutle of Junuors but thus was the first tume our class was unuted together ever sunce we started school Our home room teacher was Miss Scavaruel Thus year contauned some of the buggest experuences whuch wull be remembered by the members of our class The class play held on Aprul 14 T950 namely The Braunstorm under the durectuon of Muss Pogachnuck was the first memorable occasuon On May T6 1950 we held the Junuor Senuor Banquet at Chartuers Coun try Club un whuch we proudly honored the Sen uors of T950 Not many days later the Honors Assembly was held at whuch the Graduates of 50 vacated the Senuor seats and we as Junuors took theur place un the front of the gym SEPTEMBER 1950 Comung wuth September 1950 was the fulfill ment of the dream of every student attendung hugh school the fact of beung called a Senuor Wuth the realuzatuon of thus dream we started our Senuor year wuth the untentuon of makung ut an un forgettable one The Senuor Class Play Sprung Fever held on November 'I7 1950 helped to carry out thus untentuon Then on December 21 1950 un the beautufully decorated gym we held the tradutuonal Chrustmas Party whuch resulted un beung one of the best partues held by cu Senuor Class The nught of our Senuor Prom many couples danced to the soft musuc of Earl Eckler makung February 23 1951 outstandung un the munds of all who attended On February 15 T951 wuth the measurung of our caps and gowns made each Senuor realuze that the best years of theur luves were slowly passung away At gradu atuon on May 24 l95T dressed un our caps and gowns and wuth duplomas un our hands we left Robunson lookung back and knowung that our dear Alma Mater would never be forgotten by our class The Graduates of T951 ll ll 11 11 . . . . . . ' I - OUR NEW SCHOOL THE J W BURKETT BUILDING The Sensors feel that the progress of the new school buuldung should be shown In our yearbook Since It was not used as the theme the most appropruate place as the flyleaf We had hoped for several years that we would graduate from a new hugh school Due to the crowded condutuons of the Elementary Bunldung the new school provided larger classrooms for the elementary students Although we canno graduate from this new bulldung we appreciate nt an that our brothers sisters and In the future our children wall have modern facllutles To raise the money for the two story construction a Bond lssue was put before the people and was voted upon at the general electron nn November 1949 The ground was broken ln January T950 trncuans plumbers and laborers were seen busy at thelr work The final landscaping which was done In the late fall adds to the beauty of our school The new bulldung has twelve classrooms a lnbrary modern rest rooms large storage rooms a cafeterua and a shop The shop was moved from the hugh school to the new buuldmg un October of last fall The cafeteria wlll seat approxu mately two hundred flfty students at one time Included an the cafeterla IS a kitchen and a storage room Because of Doctor Burketts long servuce and help on the School Board the new building was named the J W Burkett School The students entered the new bulldnng on January 2 1951 We hope the students wall apprecuate thus welcomed addutnon to our school 81 ' . -: . . .
