Mr. Coffey, a native of Bedford County, Virginia, graduated from Randolph Macon Academy in 1927. He prepared himself for a career in education by attending Ran¬ dolph Macon College in Ashland Virginia and the University of Virginia at Charlottesville. He began his educational career in 1929 as an instructor in physics at Randolph Macon Academy. From 1931 to 1943 he worked as a teacher, coach and principal in Bedford County, Virginia. His educational career was interrupted from July 1943 to October 1945 when he served as a member of the U.S. Army. In December 1945, he came to Fairfax County as assistant principal at Falls Church High School. During the past twenty-seven years, he has served the students of Fairfax County as assistant principal, principal, director of secondary education, assistant superintendent for personnel, and associate superintendent. Three years ago, Mr. Coffey became chairman of a committee that planned a new kind of school which was to become the prototype for many Fairfax County schools. Subsequently he became the principal of the school which he was instrumental in planning. Mr. Coffey, from the beginning of his career, had a strong feeling about young people and a unique talent to inspire them to greatness. Those of us who have been privileged to work with him have been amazed at his enthusiasm, vigor and ability to establish rapport with young people in the 1970’s when so many people despair of our “turned off’ young people. Mr. Coffey conceived of Robinson as the school for the in¬ dividual. Such a school appreciates the potential of a person, recognizes students as individuals rather than members of groups and seeks to be helpful to students on a one-to-one basis. The faculty of such a school strives to present lasting truths as well as new ideas with a flexible and adventuresome attitude. Samuel J. Coffey has made a tremendous contribution to Fairfax County schools by consistently recognizing the in¬ dividual potential of students, teachers and administrators alike. Eugene R. Puffenberger, Associate Principal 17
